1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Cytokines in Autoimmune Diseases and Cancer
Cytokines are secreted, or membrane-bound, proteins that regulate the: growth,
differentiation, and activation of immune cells (1). As a result, dysregulation of cytokine
production, or action, is thought to play an important role in the development of diseases ,
such as autoimmune disorders and cancer (1, 2).
Autoimmune diseases , which affect approximately 5% of the population, and
disproportionately befall woman, comprise a heterogeneous group of poorly understood
disorders (3). In general, these illnesses are characterized by an abnormal lymphocyte
activation, but non-lymphoid cells, especially Antigen-Presenting Cells (APCs), such as
macrophages and Dendritic Cells (DCs), are thought to contribute critically to disease
pathogenesis (4).

Abstract. This was a joint meeting with some shared sessions. Although this report focuses
primarily on the angiogenesis meeting, a few of the extracellular matrix talks are covered. The
joint meeting gave a good overview of the entire angiogenesis field. Some of the talks were

Spiritual and Emotional Issues Relating to Cancer and Chronic Diseases
in General.
There has been a lot of scientific work looking at personality factors and emotional issues in
cancer in particular. The most prolific author in this area is Grossarth-Maticeck. He devised
a questionnaire which is essentially a ‘negativity to positivity scale’ and carried out
prospective studies. That means looking into the future, over a period of 10 years, and
designing an intervention which moved a patient’s attitude towards the positive direction,
resulting in a decreased incidence of cancer . There is much other evidence to support this
idea and the group sessions we are running are designed just to do that. Evidence for these
approaches comes regularly in the Medical Journals, and a recent paper in the Journal of the
National Cancer Institute in America show that if a patient travels a significant ...

The objective of this presentation is to present the
novel strategies adopted to prevent genetic diseases in
Saudi Arabia. The genetic diseases either due to
chromosome defects or to alterations in single gene
structure produce infants with usually severe diseases .
The management of such disorders is: (A) usually costly

Abstract
Background : Cancer and other chronic diseases are a major cause of mortality and morbidity.
Although treatments have the potential to cure or prolong life in many individuals, both disease and
its treatment can cause substantial suffering and impairment in quality of life (QOL). Increasing
attention has been paid to the formal assessment of QOL and psychosocial issues. Several generic
and disease specific, self reported measures of QOL have been developed ...

Smoking is now identified as a major cause of heart disease, stroke, several different forms of cancer , and a wide variety of other health problems. Heart disease and lung cancer comprise of the vast majority of deaths caused by smoking, followed by chronic bronchitis, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, and other cancers . 1
LUNG CANCER
Lung cancer was the first major disease to be causally linked to cigarette smoking. 1
Australia - wide approximately 6,200 people die from lung cancer each year, an estimated 120 people a week. 4
Smokers are 10 times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers, and heavy smokers are 15-25 times more at risk than non-smokers. 1

John Peters – Lung Cancer and Myasthenia Gravis
In mid-August 1989 John Peters turned 60 years of age. He was working out regularly, and five days a
week was also swimming 1000 yards. He had never been a smoker, ate a good diet, and had only missed
work once in 30 years. After giving him his annual examination, his doctor pronounced him in excellent
health.
Just two months later, however, he had a persistent cough. In November he underwent open chest surgery
for non-small cell lung cancer . The operation was followed by 24 radiation treatments which seemed to
work – for a while. About a year later, he developed another cough and began losing weight, strength and
energy. “I was like a wind-up toy that was running down” he later recalled of this time, “and the doctors
were not helping.”

Introduction: Patients’ and caregivers’ fear of addiction and concern about side effects with
morphine have been found to be among the major barriers for adequate pain relief in cancer
patients.
Methods: In a qualitative study we asked 60 patients in our outpatient pain clinic to record up to
five associations with a list of items of diseases , drugs and application routes.
Results: Cancer and AIDS were associated most often with death, followed by suffering, anxiety
and hopelessness. Morphine was associated predominantly with pain and pain relief, but fears of

Special Issue
The belief that infectious agents are a cause
of chronic inflammatory diseases of unknown
etiology and of cancer is not new. Approximately
100 years ago, doctors noted a connection
between cervical cancer and sexual promiscuity
that transcended mere coincidence (1). By 1911, a
connection between viruses and cancers in
animals had become well established (2). As early
as the 1930s, mycoplasmas were proposed as a
cause of rheumatoid arthritis in humans, and
shortly thereafter, they were proven to be the
most common cause of naturally occurring
chronic arthritis in animals (3). Proof of causality
of cancer and arthritis in humans was more
difficult. When searches for infectious agents in
cancer and arthritis found none, research began
to focus on mechanisms ...
