Background: Previous studies have demonstrated that inges-
tion of arsenic in drinking water is a strong risk factor for
several forms of cancer , including bladder cancer . It is not
known whether arsenic-related cancers are genetically simi-
lar to cancers in unexposed individuals or what mechanisms
of carcinogenesis may underlie their formation. This study
was designed to compare chromosomal alterations in blad-
der cancers of arsenic-exposed individuals to provide insight
into the mechanism of how arsenic may induce or promote
cancer . Methods: A case–case study was conducted in Ar-
gentina and Chile examining ...

Molecular Mechanisms and Pathways in
Bladder Cancer Development and Progression
Ichabod Jung, MD, and Edward Messing, MD
Background: The basis for bladder cancer development and progression is complex and involves genetic
abnormalities. These abnormalities yield phenotypic changes that allow normal transitional cells to become
cancerous and finally acquire the “malignant phenotype.”
Methods: The authors review the most common genetic alterations in bladder cancer and the molecular
mechanisms and pathways involved in the conversion of normal transitional cell into malignant transitional
cancer cells.
Results: There are several potential genetic changes of the urothelium that eventually cause bladder cancer
initiation and tumor progression. Some of these alterations are also found in other malignancies suggesting
that key common pathways exist in the ...

From [www.incontinence.org] Last viewed: 13.07.2004
Because bladder cancer is not widely discussed, you may believe that it is a rare
disease. Yet this form of cancer occurs more often than you might think. In fact, it
is the fourth most common cancer among men and the ninth most common among
women in the United States. Each year, more than 50,000 new cases of bladder
cancer are detected.
Fortunately, the majority of bladder cancers do not grow rapidly and can be treated
without major surgery. Thus, most patients with bladder cancer are not at risk of
developing a cancer that will spread and become life-threatening. Early detection is
vital; it allows the prompt treatment that gives patients the best chance for a favorable
outlook.
This booklet is designed to answer your questions about bladder cancer - what it is,
what its signs are, how it is treated, and what you can do to help keep your bladder
healthy.

Bladder Cancer
Approximately 54,000 new cases of bladder cancer are diagnosed annually resulting in
12,000 deaths in the U.S. Men are affected three times more frequently than women, but
it is rare in individuals who are younger than 40. Those demonstrating an increased
risk are smokers and workers in the dye, chemical, and rubber industries. The tumors
have a tendency to recur following removal and may become more invasive with each
recurrence.
The major prognostic features are the depth of invasion into the bladder wall (stage) and
the degree of cellular differentiation of the tumor (grade). A deeper level of invasion

Health Consultation Review of Bladder Cancer Data (May, 2001)
Abstract
This report is a follow-up to the November 1998 study Cancer Incidence and Birthweight
in Relation to Exposure to Raymark Waste. It was undertaken in response to citizens’
concerns about elevated female bladder cancer rates among those who lived closer to
Raymark waste. The report re-analyzed data from the original study, taking into account
an additional five years of bladder cancer data (1991-1996). New techniques were used to
improve statistical precision and more advanced disease mapping methodologies were
also employed. The results of this report are therefore believed to be more accurate than
the original study.
The report found that there were elevated risks for female bladder cancer near Raymark
waste sites, but this did not hold true over time. Male bladder cancer was not consistently ...

1. BACKGROUND
The incidence of bladder carcinoma is rising in western countries. In 1996, approximately 53,000 patients were
diagnosed with bladder cancer in the USA (1), 9000 in France (2), 2000 in Sweden (3) 8000 in Spain (4) and
1120 in Belgium (5). Approximately 75 to 85 % of patients present with disease confined to the mucosa (stage
Ta-Tis) or submucosa (stage T1). The other 15 to 25 % have muscle invasion or nodal disease (stages T2-4,
N+) at presentation (1). The management of superficial bladder cancer has become more complex, with
urologic opinion differing with regard to initial investigation, treatment and follow-up. ...

The aim of this study was to reveal the clinical features of anterior urethral recurrence in patients
with superficial bladder cancer , and to determine the appropriate treatment. Three hundred and
three patients with superficial bladder cancer , who were newly diagnosed and initially treated
conservatively in our hospital between 1965 and 1990, were followed for at least 5 years and their
clinical outcomes were analyzed. Clinical factors, including anterior urethral recurrence, were
evaluated statistically regarding tumor progression. Eight patients (2.6 ) had anterior urethral ...

Bladder Cancer and
Exposure to Ionizing Radiation
Summary:
There is strong evidence that bladder cancer may be associated with exposure to ionizing
radiation. This evidence includes studies of nuclear workers. This is consistent with the National Research
Council’s finding that the bladder is sensitive to ionizing radiation. Bladder cancer is designated as a
“specified” cancer under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act.
Historically, incidence of bladder cancer has been high in both Los Alamos County and Rio Arriba County.
Mortality has been very low in Los Alamos County and moderate in Rio Arriba County. Incidence means

The highest average annual age-adjusted incidence rate for the 1992-96 period was among white males (34.7 per 100,000). This
is compared to 17.7 for black males and 8.8 for all females. Pennsylvania's 1992-96 incidence rate for white males is comparable
to the National Cancer Institute's average annual SEER rate of 31.3 for 1992-96.
There were 3,354 new cases of urinary bladder cancer reported for Pennsylvania residents in 1996, the second highest annual
number ever reported to the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry. The annual age-adjusted incidence rates from 1987 to 1996 have been
slightly higher in recent years for black males and white females. Annual incidence rates for white males and black females
remained fairly stable over that ten-year period. White males had the highest average annual age-specific incidence rates during
1992-96 for almost every age-group.

Bladder cancer is common malignancy of the transitional cells lining the surface of the bladder .
There were approximately 56,000 new cases of bladder cancer diagnosed in 2002.
There were over 12,000 deaths from bladder cancer in 2002.
Bladder cancer is usually diagnosed in person 40 and older, with men
being 2-3 times more likely to be affected.
The primary risk factor for bladder cancer is smoking. Cigarette smoking has been shown to increase
the risk of developing bladder cancer by a factor of five when compared to non-smokers.
50% of men diagnosed with bladder cancer are smokers.
30% of women diagnosed with bladder cancer are smokers.
The most common symptom of bladder cancer is blood in the urine,
