Epidemiology
The incidence of bladder cancer in the United
States in the year 2000 was approximately 21 per
100,000 persons.
3
The American Cancer Society
estimates that 60,240 new cases of bladder cancer
will be diagnosed in the United States during 2004
(about 44,640 men and 15,600 women), and about
12,710 people will die of the disease (about 8,780
men and 3,930 women).
4
Bladder cancer occurs
primarily in men older than 60 and roughly twice
as frequently in white men as in black men.
3
Men
are 2.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with
bladder cancer than women; age-adjusted mortality
rates from bladder cancer are similarly higher for
men than for women.
Cigarette smoking is the greatest environmental
risk factor for bladder cancer . Cigarette smokers are
4 to 7 times more likely to develop bladder cancer ...

Burden of Suffering
Bladder cancer is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the
U.S., primarily in older men. Over 50,000 new cases and over 11,000
deaths due to bladder cancer are predicted to occur in 1995 in the U.S.
1
Risk rises steeply with age; over half of all deaths from bladder cancer
occur after age 70. The incidence of bladder cancer is 3–4 times higher in
men than women, and roughly twice as high in white men compared to
black men.
2,3
Among white men, the annual incidence of bladder cancer
after age 65 is approximately 2/1,000 persons (vs. 0.1/1,000 under 65),
and the lifetime probability of developing cancer is over 3%.
3
The proba-
bility of dying from bladder cancer is much smaller, however—less than
1%. Cigarette smoking markedly increases the risk for bladder cancer (rel-
ative risk among smokers vs. ...

Bladder cancer currently accounts for a significant
number of malignancies diagnosed each year in the US.
Conventional methods for detecting the presence of
malignancies in the bladder rely on cystoscopy and
urine cytology. While effective, they are limited in their
ability to detect early subclinical forms of the disease
and dysplastic lesions that appear visibly normal.

Incidence and Mortality
Rate Trends
While urinary bladder cancer incidence is
significantly higher in Whites than in African
Americans, the mortality rates are nearly the
same, due in large part to the later stage at
diagnosis among African Americans. Rates
for Hispanics, Asians or Pacific Islanders, and
AmericanIndians/AlaskanNativesarelowerthan
those for Whites or African Americans. Overall
incidence has stayed the same or risen slightly
since the 1980s, but mortality dropped through
the 1980s, resulting in increased survival. Men
have greater incidence and mortality rates than
women in all ethnic groups.
It is estimated that approximately $2.9 billion*
is spent in the United States each year on the
treatment of bladder cancer .

PRINTING, BLADDER CANCER AND C23 BENEFIT
INTRODUCTION
Bladder Cancer is described as Prescribed Disease C23, and as such is one that
has been officially accepted as a special risk of certain specified occupations, or
of exposure to specified substances.
Most occupational Bladder Cancers have been linked to work in the manufacture
of dyestuffs, in the rubber and cable industries and in the retort houses of
gasworks producing coal gas. However, it is widely accepted that the incidence
of Bladder Cancer may be raised in certain other industries, including the printing
industry. This has been recognised by many articles on Bladder Cancer , but in
particular by the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council in their 1983 report on
Neoplasm of the Bladder , where they stated that:

BOSTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) that establishes a bladder
cancer screening program within the Department of Public Health (DPH) was given a favorable report by
the Committee on Health Care Financing today.
“This bill aims to encourage firefighters to get screened for bladder cancer every year,” said Senator
Moore. “It is extremely important to detect bladder cancer early. The survival rate is much higher. In
addition, with the data collected through this program, the state can educate and prevent bladder cancer
to certain high risk groups.”
Senate bill 1301 requires the commissioner of the DPH to establish, promote, and maintain a public
information program regarding the incidence of bladder cancer in professional ...

STATE HOUSE, BOSTON, JULY 27, 2005 ..Firefighters in Massachusetts could soon have free access to a test
that could save their lives.
Key lawmakers on Wednesday endorsed a proposal to include bladder cancer screening procedures as part of a
firefighter's annual physical, and establish a registry with the state Department of Public Health to track incidents of
bladder cancer among firefighters. Lawmakers say the program and registry would cost the state roughly $630,000
annually.
Rep. Patricia Walrath, a Stow Democrat who chairs the Health Care Financing Committee, said bladder cancer is
seen as an "occupational hazard" for firefighters, given their high exposure to toxins and chemicals emitted by fires.

ABSTRACT: Although cigarette smoking is a principal risk factor for bladder cancer in
both men and women, few studies have statistically evaluated whether gender modifies the
effect of smoking on bladder cancer risk. We initiated the present case-control study at
Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, U.S., to provide further data on this
important issue. We observed similar risk estimates for men and women with comparable
smoking exposures, but did not observe a statistically significant interaction between gender
and lifetime smoking exposure. We conclude that cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for
bladder cancer in both sexes, but that gender does not modify the effect of ...

Bladder Cancer and
Exposure to Ionizing Radiation
Summary:
There is strong evidence that bladder cancer may be associated with exposure to ionizing
radiation. This evidence includes studies of nuclear workers. This is consistent with the National Research
Council’s finding that the bladder is sensitive to ionizing radiation. Bladder cancer is designated as a
“specified” cancer under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act.
Historically, incidence of bladder cancer has been high in both Los Alamos County and Rio Arriba County.
Mortality has been very low in Los Alamos County and moderate in Rio Arriba County. Incidence means

Urinary bladder cancer in the Greater Bay Area
1988-2002
Spring 2005
Urinary bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer in non-Hispanic white males,
comprising 7% of all invasive cancers diagnosed in the Greater Bay Area. In 2002, approxi-
mately 1,100 cases were diagnosed and 241 deaths were due to bladder cancer in the
Greater Bay Area. The greatest risk factor is smoking, with smokers twice as likely to be
diagnosed with bladder cancer than nonsmokers.

Bladder Cancer
The American Cancer Society estimates that bladder cancer will affect 87,500 people in the U.S.
in 2001, accounting for 6% of all cancers diagnosed in the United States among men and 2%
among women (ACS, 2001). In Massachusetts, the 1997 age-adjusted incidence rate of this
cancer was 14.1 per 100,000 residents (MCR, 2000). Males are three times more likely to
develop bladder cancer than females and whites are two times more likely to develop this disease
than blacks. The risk of bladder cancer increases with age and the mean age at diagnosis is 68-69
years (ACS, 2000).
The greatest risk factor for bladder cancer is cigarette smoking. Smokers are more than twice as

who presents with significant
urinary frequency, urgency, and
moderate dysuria of about six
months’ duration. He had
previously received a two-week
course of a fluoroquinolone
antibiotic from his primary care
physician without clear

chills, flank pain, or gross
hematuria. He admits to a
moderate decrease in his urinary

Abstract. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the risk of tumor recurrence of
bladder cancer after surgical operation (TUR: Trans-urethral Resection). The prog-
nostic significance of some clinical features in 454 patients with primary superficial
bladder carcinoma is studied. The modelling procedure is featured within interval
censored and right censored framework.
Keywords: bladder carcinoma, prognostic factors, recurrence, interval–censored
survival ...
