Morphing into Cancer: The Role of Developmental Signaling Pathways in Brain Tumor Formation Marie P. Fogarty, Jessica D. Kessler, Robert J. Wechsler-Reya Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina 27710 Received 10 January 2005; accepted 11 January 2005 ABSTRACT: Morphogens play a critical role in most aspects of development, including expansion and patterning of the central nervous system. Activating germline mutations in components of the Hedgehog and Wnt pathways have provided evidence for the important roles morphogens play in the genesis of brain tumors such as cerebellar medulloblastoma. In addition, aberrant expression of transforming growth factor-b (TGF-b) superfamily members has been demonstrated to contribute to progression of malignant gliomas.       PDF [179,8 KB]  From [www.odh.ohio.gov]  Last viewed: 20.12.2005
Primary brain and other central nervous system (CNS) cancers made up 1.4 percent of the incident (newly diagnosed) cancers reported to the Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System (OCISS) for the years 1997 through 2001 (Table 1). Primary tu- mors, or those tumors that originate in the brain or CNS, serve as the focus of this report. The average annual age-adjusted brain and other CNS cancer incidence rate during this time period was 6.8 cases per 100,000 residents (an average of 784 cases per year). Average annual numbers and rates represent the number of cases diagnosed per year on average, not the total number of cases diagnosed during the five-year time period. The average annual age-adjusted U.S. (SEER 1 ) incidence rate for 1997-2001 was 6.4 cases per 100,000 residents, which is about 6 percent less than the rate for Ohio. Completeness of reporting of brain and other CNS cancer ...

brain  cancer                  Changes in transcript abundance during development of brain cancer in rats     Introduction:        The process of transformation of a normal somatic cell into a neoplastic cell has not been well characterized.  Although it is known that the set of transcribed genes in a cancerous cell can be quite different from that of a normal cell [1, 2], these transcriptional changes have not been carefully analyzed.  In particular, the changes involved through the development of a cell from precancerous to actively malignant are mostly uncharacterized.        Better understanding of the transcriptional changes that a cell undergoes during its transformation into a tumor cell may lead to more effective treatment of individuals with cancer .  This understanding may also ...

Abstract. Although conventional chemotherapies are used to treat patients with malignancies, damage to normal cells is problematic. Blood-forming bone marrow cells are the most adversely affected. It is therefore necessary to find alternative agents that can kill cancer cells but have minimal effects on normal cells. We investigated the brain cancer cell-killing activity of a homeopathic medicine, Ruta, isolated from a plant, Ruta graveolens . We treated human brain cancer and HL-60 leukemia cells, normal B-lymphoid cells, and murine melanoma cells in vitro with different concentrations of Ruta in combination with Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 . Fifteen patients diagnosed with intracranial tumors were treated with Ruta 6 and Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 . Of these 15 patients, 6 of the 7 glioma patients showed complete ...

We apply cNMF hierarchically, with spectral recovery and subspace reduction constraining which observations are used in the next level of processing. The decomposition model ...

The algorithm is based on the non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) algorithm, 1, 2 extending it to include a constraint on the positivity of the amplitudes of the recovered spectra and mixing matrices. This positivity constraint enables recovery of physically meaningful spectra even in the presence of noise that causes a significant number of the observation amplitudes to ...

He will be raising money for the National Brain Tumor Foundation to help other brain tumor survivors and to advance brain tumor research. (PRWEB) October 25, 2005 -- For most of us, there comes a time when a decision is made on the direction of the rest of our lives. It doesn’t usually happen between brain surgeries. A few years back I got quite a scare when I started having "woozy" and "wavy" feeling in my head. Just like walking on a deck of a ship or a mild hangover. Every day starting in the morning. I went through three doctors until I beleived them: my neck and shoulder muscles havin been tightening real tense due to sitting from of a computer! I do bycycling and nature walks a lot but those muscles just did not get enough exercise. The last doctor sent me to a massage. A month later I was OK again. The uneasy feeling never came back but I've started excercising my muscles more. idol_wild@hotmail.com (Casseti) wrote: >Hi > >I ...
