Incidence and Mortality Rate Trends The incidence and mortality rates for cancers that originate in the brain and central nervous system (CNS) have remained relatively unchanged in the last decade. Both incidence and mortality rates are substantially higher for Whites than for other racial/ethnic groups. Regardless of racial/ethnic group, men have higher incidence and mortality rates than women. Brain and other CNS cancers are the second leading cause of cancer -related death in children and make up 21 percent of all childhood cancers. In comparison to adults, the absolute number of brain and CNS cancer deaths in children is smaller and survival rates are higher. Source for incidence and mortality data: Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program and the National Center for Health Statistics. Additional statistics and ...

National Cancer Institute SEER Program 26 C omparisons of the incidence rates for cancers occurring in the brain and elsewhere in the nervous system among different populations are often difficult because of different practices regarding the inclusion or exclusion of benign tumors. Only brain and other nervous system cancers classified as malignant, however, are included in the SEER incidence data. Malignant neoplasms of the brain and other nervous system are relatively rare, occur more frequently among men than among women; and most racial/ethnic groups have a male-to-female ratio around 1.4. Children and adults have different distributions of subtypes of malignancies in the central nervous system. There were too few cases to calculate meaningful incidence rates for Japanese women and for men or women in the Alaska Native, ...

Review Stem cells and brain cancer Elena I. Fomchenko a , Eric C. Holland a,b, T a Department of Cancer Biology and Genetics, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY 10021, USA b Department Surgery (Neurosurgery), Neurology, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY 10021, USA Received 15 February 2005, revised version received 8 March 2005 Available online 14 April 2005 Abstract One of the most devastating CNS pathologies is brain cancer . The undifferentiated character of brain tumor cells and recent reports of cancer stem cells prompt questions regarding the involvement of normal stem/progenitor cells in brain tumor biology, their potential contribution to the tumor itself, and whether they are the cause or the consequence of tumor initiation and progression. The cancer stem cell ...

Brain Tumor Symptoms? Source: http://sci.tech-archive.net/Archive/sci.med.diseases. cancer /2004-07/0111.html From: Casseti ( idol_wild_at_hotmail.com ) Date: 07/10/04 Date: 10 Jul 2004 03:55:42 -0700 Hi I was hoping someone might be able to clarify something for me. Although I'm booked in to see a neuorlogist in a month's time, I'm curious as to whether anybody else's experience resembles mine. Basically, I've been getting episodes where I experience burning and/or tingling sensations in both of my hands, and certain 'activities' seem to trigger the sensations. The first time it actually felt as if my left hand had burst into flames, and then the 'fire' spread to my right hand. The first attack occurred 4 months ago whilst driving. Subsequent attacks have been less 'inflammatory', although I typically experience burning during the course of the day for up to ...

(AMEX:YMI, TSX:YM, AIM:YMBA), the cancer product development company, today announced that updated data from a Phase II monotherapy trial of nimotuzumab in children with resistant or relapsed high-grade gliomas ( brain cancers) were reported in a poster presented on September 23rd, 2005 at the 37th Congress of The International Society of Paediatric Oncology in Vancouver, Canada. Nimotuzumab produced cytotoxic efficacy and evidence of survival benefit in children with heavily pretreated relapsed high grade gliomas, especially those with diffuse, intrinsic pontine glioma. The presentation updated data ...
