RISK FACTOR INFORMATION FOR SELECTED CANCER TYPES Source: Community Assessment Program, Center for Environmental Health, Massachusetts Department of Public Health March, 2005 Brain and CNS Cancer Brain and central nervous system (CNS) tumors can be either malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous). Primary brain tumors (i.e., brain cancer ) comprise two main types: gliomas and malignant meningiomas. Gliomas are a general classification of malignant tumors that include a variety of types, named for the cells from which they arise: astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, and ependymomas. Meningiomas arise from the meninges, which are tissues that surround the outer part of the spinal cord and brain . Although meningiomas are not technically brain tumors, as they occur outside of the brain , they account for about 50% of all reported primary brain and spinal cord tumors. ...

brain  cancer  Leukemia   Leukemia is the general term that includes a group of different cancers that occur in the blood forming organs and result in the formation of abnormal amounts and types of white blood cells in the blood and bone marrow.  Individuals with leukemia generally maintain abnormally high amounts of leukocytes or white blood cells in their blood.  This condition results in an individual's inability to maintain certain body functions, particularly a person's ability to combat infection.   In 2005, leukemia is expected to affect approximately 34,810 individuals (19,640 males and 15,170 females) in the United States, resulting in 22,570 deaths.  In Massachusetts, approximately 770 individuals will be diagnosed with the disease in 2005, representing more than 2% of all cancer diagnoses.  There are four major types of leukemia: acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia ...

C hemotherapy has played a limited role in the treatment of patients with glioblastoma multiforme—but findings discussed at the 2004 American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting showed that concomitant use of temozolomide Temozolomide/radiotherapy may become a new standard of care for glioblastoma multiforme Study shows a ‘clinically meaningful’ survival advantage for chemotherapy radiation in vitro, and temozolomide has shown some activity against re- current glioma. Results of a phase II study released 2 years ago showed that the combination of temozolomide and radiotherapy had promising clinical efficacy (Stupp R et al: J Clin Oncol 2002;20:1375–1382).   brain  cancer  Air Pollution & Brain Cancer CURWOOD: California state legislators say it?s their way or the highway when it comes to protect ing school children from air pollution. Concerns over childhood asthma and lung cancer have led to the passage of a bill will block the building of new schools near major freeways and busy roads. Tiny particles from passing diesel vehicle pose some of the biggest dangers to health. Now, an emerging study may show that air pollution is not only linked to respiratory problems, but may also to brain cancer . Dr. Keith Black is heading up this study and directs neurosurgery at Cedar Sinai Medical Center. He joins me now from his Los Angeles office. Dr. Black, welcome.     BLACK: Thank you.     CURWOOD: Tell me, Doctor, what?s the best evidence to date that there may be a link between specific types of air pollution and brain ...

This evidence is based upon studies conducted at Los Alamos National Laboratory, studies of nuclear workers at other sites, and others exposed to ionizing radiation. This is consistent with the National Research Council’s finding that brain tissue is sensitive to ionizing radiation. There remains some scientific debate as to whether brain cancer in nuclear workers may be due to radiation or chemical exposures. Brain ...
