August 16, 2004 Vaccine plus drugs improves brain cancer survival Clinical Cancer Research: http://www.reutershealth.com/ NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Treating patients who have glioblastoma multiforme, a lethal type of brain tumor, with an experimental vaccine seems to sensitize the tumor to subsequent chemotherapy, according to a study by researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. In the study, published in Clinical Cancer Research, patients with these brain tumors who were treated with both a cancer vaccine and chemotherapy survived longer and exhibited delayed tumor progression compared with those treated with either therapy alone. "This is the strongest effect of any therapy on brain tumors we've seen so far," lead investigator Dr. Christopher J. Wheeler told Reuters Health. The patients, ages 32 to 78 years old, underwent surgery and radiation therapy. ...

Berkshire Priorities Committee Policy Statement 39 Temozolomide for Brain Cancer Date of Issue August 2001 Review Date March 2004 Malignant glioma is the most common form of primary brain cancer in England and Wales (about 3,500 patients each year) but accounts for less than 1% of all cancers. In Berkshire this is approximately 10-12 patients; patients currently receive supportive care with steroids and or anticonvulsants. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) reviewed the one RCT available comparing Temozolomide with procarbazine (225 patients); progression free survival at six months was 21% Vs 8%. However, the median survival advantage was six weeks and not deemed statistically significant. The cost effectiveness of Temozolomide was not considered due to the limited clinical effectiveness evidence available. NICE recommends ...
