Berkshire Priorities Committee Policy Statement 39 Temozolomide for Brain Cancer Date of Issue August 2001 Review Date March 2004 Malignant glioma is the most common form of primary brain cancer in England and Wales (about 3,500 patients each year) but accounts for less than 1% of all cancers. In Berkshire this is approximately 10-12 patients; patients currently receive supportive care with steroids and or anticonvulsants. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) reviewed the one RCT available comparing Temozolomide with procarbazine (225 patients); progression free survival at six months was 21% Vs 8%. However, the median survival advantage was six weeks and not deemed statistically significant. The cost effectiveness of Temozolomide was not considered due to the limited clinical effectiveness evidence available. NICE recommends ...

Abstract. Although conventional chemotherapies are used to treat patients with malignancies, damage to normal cells is problematic. Blood-forming bone marrow cells are the most adversely affected. It is therefore necessary to find alternative agents that can kill cancer cells but have minimal effects on normal cells. We investigated the brain cancer cell-killing activity of a homeopathic medicine, Ruta, isolated from a plant, Ruta graveolens . We treated human brain cancer and HL-60 leukemia cells, normal B-lymphoid cells, and murine melanoma cells in vitro with different concentrations of Ruta in combination with Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 . Fifteen patients diagnosed with intracranial tumors were treated with Ruta 6 and Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 . Of these 15 patients, 6 of the 7 glioma patients ...

We will talk about what it is like to be a caregiver, like what were some of the most difficult challenges and how this affected this relationship. We will also touch on communication, especially the most difficult issue, I think for most people, which is talking about coming to the end of life. I'd ...

RISK FACTOR INFORMATION FOR SELECTED CANCER TYPES Source: Community Assessment Unit, Bureau of Environmental Health Assessment, Massachusetts Department of Public Health August, 2001 Brain Cancer Brain tumors can be either malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous). Primary brain tumors (i.e., brain cancer ) comprise two main types: gliomas and malignant meningiomas. Gliomas are a general classification of malignant tumors that include a variety of types, named for the cells from which they arise: astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, and ependymomas. Meningiomas arise from the meninges, which are tissues that surround the outer part of the spinal cord and brain . Although meningiomas are not technically brain tumors, as they occur outside of the brain , they account for about 50% of all reported primary brain and spinal cord tumors. The majority of meningiomas (about ...
