For me, these words best describe the women of the YSC and its message — if you are fighting to raise awareness about young women with breast cancer , you can be sure of one thing: You are not alone. Once considered an outsider in the breast cancer community, the YSC has succeeded in taking its message mainstream, right where it belongs. Beth Murphy, author and producer of “Fighting For Our Future” The Young Survival Coalition has a uniting spirit, a loving heart and the smarts to ensure that the medical, scientific and advocacy communities finally address the issues of young women and breast cancer . It is saving lives and offering many hope and comfort. ...

27 1. BREAST CANCER SCREENING Deidre Gifford, MD, MPH The literature for this chapter was identified by a MEDLINE search for English language review articles on breast cancer screening from 1992 to the present, and by reviewing the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Guide to Clinical Preventive Services (USPSTF, 1996). Once general topics for indicators were selected, additional articles reporting primary data on the topics were identified based on the bibliographies of the review articles and the USPSTF chapter and reviewed. In addition, a focused search for randomized trials of breast self-examination (BSE) was performed. IMPORTANCE Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed nondermatologic cancer and the second leading cause of cancer -related deaths among women in the United States (MMWR, 1996). In 1995, there were an estimated 182,000 newly diagnosed cases ...

How common is breast cancer ? Breast cancer is not very common until about 40 years of age, but it becomes more common as women get older. The incidence of breast cancer has increased over the last 20 years. Now, more than 6000 new cases are diag- nosed each year in Australia. One in 15 women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. Why is screening for breast cancer important? Early detection of breast cancer is very important; it increases the success of treatment and reduces the risk of death. Research has shown that a mammogram is the most effective way of finding early breast can- cer in older women. Some symptoms, such as a lump in the breast , may be a sign of breast cancer . However, there may be other causes. If ...

MEDIA RELEASE 25 th July, 2003 More Breast Cancer Myths: Black Cohosh Debate The National Herbalists Association of Australia (NHAA) has criticised some sections of the scientific community for their attempts to discredit a popular and effective alternative for hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the North American herb, black cohosh. Last year it was revealed that the use of HRT increases the risk of cancer , an announcement that inspired a significant increase in the use of safer alternatives. Earlier this month, the results of a study using mice were presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Washington. A subsequent press release has quoted researchers speculating that black cohosh may not be a safe alternative therapy for women with breast cancer and may be undesirable for women with undetected breast tumours ...
