Blood Test Shows Promise in Early
Identification of Colon Cancer
Researchers have developed a blood test that detects the presence of
fragments of mutated genes that are present in colon cancer cells. Their pilot
studies provide the basis for diagnostic assays for cancer that could allow
physicians to detect tumors at an early stage.
The research team, led by Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Bert
Vogelstein at The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at the Johns Hopkins
Medical Institutions, published its findings on October 24, 2005, in the online
Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
(PNAS) . Vogelstein and his colleagues at Hopkins collaborated on the
studies with researchers from Israelitic Hospital in Germany.
"Assuming that future larger studies support
these initial results, our hope is that such a test
could be used ...

Gene Screen Nabs New Colon - Cancer
Genes
Howard Hughes Medical Institute researchers have combed through a catalog
of all known tyrosine kinase enzymes to identify new gene mutations that
occur in a significant fraction of colon cancers.
Researchers have known for years that abnormal activity of tyrosine kinases
can hasten the development of certain forms of cancer . In this first-of-a-kind
survey, researchers used a forward-looking approach to screen the genes that
produce tyrosine kinases — reasoning that somewhere in this genomic
landscape they might encounter novel mutations that spur colon cancer and
other types of cancer .
"The availability of the human genome
sequence allows scientists to scan sequences to
identify kinases, and the increased speed with
which DNA can be sequenced enables us to
rapidly search for mutations in those kinases in
human cancers." ...

“Collaborating to Fight Colon Cancer ”
Every year, approximately 131,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer , and
about 55,000 die from this disease. A majority of these cases occur after the age of 50,
which is why the American Cancer Society recommends that men and women at average
risk begin regular screening at age 50. However, anyone with a personal or family
history of colorectal cancer , polyps, or ulcerative colitis is at higher risk for the disease
and may need to be examined sooner and more often.
While these recommendations are ideal, many in the Danville/Pittsylvania County
Region have found meeting them impossible. The region’s long standing double-digit
unemployment rates have lent themselves to a sky rocketing rate of uninsured. Without

Detecting Colon Cancer from Outside the Body
Greensboro Imaging is one of four N.C. facilities that provide virtual
colonoscopy
Greensboro, N.C., March 2006 — A new way to detect colon cancer without an invasive
colonoscopy might help lower the death rate from this form of cancer in the Piedmont. It’s called
virtual colonoscopy, and it uses a CT scan plus powerful computer software to find the polyps that
can cause colon cancer without ever touching the body. Greensboro Imaging is one of just four
medical facilities in North Carolina to offer this new technology.
Greensboro Imaging’s virtual colonoscopy service may encourage more people at risk for colorectal
cancer to be screened for the disease because the procedure isn’t invasive like a regular colonoscopy.
Patients go through a CT scan, which takes pictures that look like slices of their colon . Then medical
software turns those pictures ...

Cancer of the colon or rectum (colorectal) develops in the digestive tract, also known as the
gastrointestinal or GI tract. The colon , or large bowel, is a muscular tube about 5 feet long and is
divided into 4 parts: Ascending, transverse descending and the sigmoid colon . The rectum
connects the sigmoid colon to the anus and is six inches in length. Cancer can develop in any of
sections in the colon and or rectum. Depending on the location, the symptoms differ, as well as
the tests to detect the cancer .
What is colon (colorectal) cancer ?
How many people are affected by colon cancer ?
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women, and the
second leading cause of death in the United States. ...

Evaluation of telomerase mRNA (hTERT) in colon cancer

From [histology1.med.uoc.gr] Last viewed: 06.07.2006
Abstract. Telomerase activation, a cardinal requirement
for immortalization, is a crucial step in the development of
malignancy and requires the induction of the catalytic
component, human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT),
encoded by the hTERT gene. By reverse transcription-PCR,
using primers within the reverse transcriptase domain of
hTERT, we investigated telomerase messenger in 8
adenomatous and 9 dysplastic polyps, and in 32 paired
cancer -normal mucosa specimens, one liver and one spleen
metastasis from patients resected for sporadic colorectal
cancer . Telomerase messenger was absent or very low in
normal mucosa and in adenomatous polyps. Dysplastic
polyps and adenocarcinoma samples showed hTERT mRNA,
with higher levels in cancer tissues compared to dysplastic
lesions. A high telomerase messenger level was shown to be
associated with late-staged cancers and with metastasis; thus, ...

Institute of Pathology, Charité University Hospital, Berlin, Germany
There is growing body of evidence that post-translational events contribute—in addition to genetic changes—to
the progression of malignant tumors. These post-translational alterations may provide targets for new
therapeutic approaches. The ELAV-like protein HuR stabilizes a group of cellular mRNAs which contain AU-rich
elements in their 3
0
untranslated region. To investigate a possible contribution of post-translational changes to
the progression of colon cancer and to overexpression of COX-2, we studied expression of HuR and COX-2 a
cohort of colorectal adenocarcinomas and in colon ...

hile colorectal cancer is the third most common
cancer found in American men and women
today, it can be treated and often cured if detected
early, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).
The incidence of colorectal cancer in Hampton Roads
is on the increase. In fact, the death rate for colon can-
cer in most cities in Hampton Roads exceeds state and
national rates.
The ACS recommends colorectal cancer screening for
men and women starting at age 50. Although the exact
cause of colorectal cancer is unclear, experts believe
most cases begin as polyps--small, precancerous
growths on the inner wall of the colon or rectum. If
not removed, some polyps can develop into cancer ,
but they are easily found with screening tests and
often removed during the same procedures.
