PDF [53,4 KB]  From [www.lib.cau.edu.cn]  Last viewed: 22.01.2005
Received: 10 December 1998 Accepted: 25 May 1999 Abstract Background: Principles of the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer with gene therapy evolved from the advent of techniques in mo- lecular biology, from increasing in- sights into the molecular basis of tu- morigenesis and from the need to de- velop more efficient treatment mo- dalities. Any gene therapy approach has to take two major tasks into con- sideration: the therapeutic gene has to be delivered into the target cell population with high efficiency, specificity and safety, and has to act in a way that provides a benefit to the patient. Discussion: Data on 22 clinical trials on malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract are available. They utilize a variety of gene-deliv- ery methods and target cell popula- tions, and there is considerable vari- ety among their strategies. Gene ...

1 WORLD CONGRESS ON GASTROINTESTINAL CANCER Barcelona, 16-19 June, 2004 The world congresses of gastrointestinal cancer has emerged from the regular meetings on pharmacological treatments of colorectal cancer , partly based on Eric Van Cutsem’s (Brussels) personal interest of this disease and definition of an international forum for discussing the development and future strategies. The world congress is now also concerned with the malignancies of liver, bile-ducts, pancreas and all of the oesofagus-stomach-bowel and attracts more than 2000 people; mostly from Europe, but there were also delegates from all other parts of the world. Distinct from most other annual congresses there is no famous world association or federation behind the meeting, but rather a smaller group of dedicated oncologists backed by the pharmaceutical industry with oncology interest. The conference still has no double ...

gastrointestinal  cancer  Laparoscopic Ultrasound in Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Staging     Jesper Durup,MD,PhD and Claus Hovendal,MD,PhD   Dept of Surgical Gastroenterology, Odense University Hospital, Denmark   Introduction:   Besides having a correct diagnosis accurate pretherapeutic staging and assessment of resectability in upper gastrointestinal malignancies (UGIM) are important in order to group the patients for different treatment strategies. One of the most important clinical tasks is to identify the patients that cannot be operated. Unnecessary laparotomies in patients with non-resectable UGIM will increase mortality and morbidity as well as reduce the quality of life in their short remaining life time period. In this chapter we will discuss the use of Laparoscopic Ultrasound (LUS) regarding the pretherapeutic identification of non-resectable UGIM, and comment ...

GASTROINTESTINAL CANCER Prof. Dr. M. Peeters Dept of Gastroenterology/Oncology University Hospital Ghent On this thirty-ninth annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago, Illinois, 524 abstracts on Gastrointestinal Cancer (GI) were published in the abstract book. Approximately 170 GI cancer papers were, either orally or as poster, presented at the meeting itself. Not only was the quantity excellent. Also the quality was outstanding this year. Mature data from several large, randomized trials became available and were discussed. For example, convincing results on the role of novel agents in the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer were presented. The conclusions will certainly influence our clinical practice in the near future. It was absolutely necessary to make a selection in the presented material for this paper. ...
