Abstract. An allogeneic irradiated RCC cell line, engi-
neered to produce IL-2 (ACHN-IL-2), admixed with
autologous metastatic formalin-treated tumour cells,
was used to vaccinate ten MRCC patients in progres-
sion of disease in spite of IL-2 immunotherapy. The
cells were administered subcutaneously and/or intra-
tumourally. Sixty-four MRCC patients in progressive
disease, not treated by vaccination but receiving simi-
lar IL-2 immunotherapy, were considered as the con-
trol group.
Patients received 4ñ16 injections (mean 9

This review article presents kidney cancer epidemiology as well as main environmental and life style risk factors.
INTRODUCTION
Kidney cancer is the most important cancer site be-
cause of high lethality rates and increasing incidence in
some parts of the world mainly among all Caucasian popu-
lations and in Japan. There were approximately 189 000
kidney cancers in the year 2000 worldwide, two-thirds
of which occurred in developed countries

KIDNEY CANCER AT A GLANCE
What is kidney cancer ?
Kidney cancer is an abnormal, uncontrolled growth of
cells in the kidney . According to the American Cancer
Society, the most common type is renal cell cancer (also
called renal cell carcinoma), which accounts for
85 percent
of all kidney tumors.
Renal cell cancer may develop in one or both kidneys. In
the early stages, kidney cancer usually causes no obvious
signs or symptoms. As kidney cancer grows, it may
invade organs near the kidney such as the liver, colon or
pancreas. Kidney cancer cells may also break away from
the original tumor and spread (or metastasize) to other
parts of the body such as the lymph nodes, bones or
lungs, with about one third of cases showing metastasis
at the time of diagnosis.

17 Cancer of the kidney
Summary
During 1992–1997, one-year relative survival after diagnosis of cancer of the kidney was
77.2% for males and 73.5% for females, and five-year relative survival was 59.9% for males
and 57.5% for females (Table 17.1). Relative survival ten years after diagnosis was 47.7% for
males and 46.2% for females in 1987–1991, the most recent period for which ten-year relative
survival data are available (Figure 17.2; Tables 17.2 and 17.3).
Between 1982–1986 and 1992–1997, kidney cancer relative survival increased significantly.
Five-year relative survival increased from 50.8% to 59.9% for males and increased from
49.4% to 57.5%for females. There was no significant change one year after diagnosis for
males whereas for females, relative survival after one year increased from 67.4% to 73.5%
(Figure 17.2; Tables 17.2 and 17.3).
As age at diagnosis increased, ...

Kidney Cancer and Exposure to Ionizing Radiation

Kidney Cancer and
(and cancer of the renal pelvis)
Exposure to Ionizing Radiation
Summary:
Strong evidence has been recorded of a possible connection between kidney cancer and
exposure to ionizing radiation. This evidence is based upon studies conducted at Los Alamos National
Laboratory, studies of nuclear workers at other sites, and others exposed to ionizing radiation. These
findings are consistent with the National Research Council’s determination that radiation can cause cancer
of the kidneys and other urinary organs. Kidney cancer is designated as a “specified” cancer under the
Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act. Historically, ...

CANCER of the KIDNEY and RENAL PELVIS
[317,9 KB]
From [www.health.state.pa.us] Last viewed: 15.07.2004
There were 1,637 cases of cancer of the kidney and renal pelvis diagnosed in 1996 among residents of Pennsylvania, the highest
annual number since statewide reporting began in 1985. Males had an average annual (1992-96) age-adjusted incidence rate about
twice that of females (13.6 and 6.9 per 100,000, respectively). Annual numbers of cases and age-adjusted incidence rates by sex
and race for 1987 through 1996 have all been on the increase.
There are few understood causes of kidney cancer ; however, cigarette smoking is an important risk factor. Approximately a quarter
of all cases are caused by this behavior. As occurred with the age-adjusted rates, age-specific incidence rates were much higher
among males for almost all age groups. Over 60 percent of all the cases for 1996 were diagnosed during the local stage of the
disease. Another 38.5 percent of the cases were diagnosed at the regional or distant stages.
The average ...
