What Is Cancer ?
Cancer develops when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Although there are many kinds of cancer , they all start
because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells.
Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a person's life, normal cells divide more
rapidly until the person becomes an adult. After that, cells in most parts of the body divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells and
to repair injuries.
Because cancer cells continue to grow and divide, they are different from normal cells. Instead of dying, they outlive normal cells and
continue to form new abnormal cells.
Cancer cells develop because of damage to DNA. This substance is in every cell and directs all its activities. ...

Kidney Cancer Vaccine Shows Promise in Trial
Sunday February 22, 2004 (1521 PST)
ISLAMABAD, February 23 (Online):
An experimental vaccine against kidney cancer has shown promising
results in reducing the recurrence of the disease, German researchers said.
Kidney cancer occurs mostly in adults over 40 and accounts for about
three percent of all cancers. About 32,000 new cases are diagnosed each
year in the United States alone.
In a trial of 379 kidney cancer patients, scientists showed that the vaccine made by
German biotechnology company LipoNova improved disease-free survival of
patients.
"For the first time ever it has been shown that additional therapy after surgery for
kidney tumors is effective," said Dr Christian Doehn of the University of Lubeck
Medical School in Germany.
Five-year survival rates were 77 percent for patients who were given ...

Possible Virus Risk Factor In Breast Cancer
Press Release by Christchurch School of Medicine & Health Sciences at 31 May 2004
A study just published in the prestigious British Journal of Cancer by researchers at the University of Otago's Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences and Dunedin School of Medicine, and the University of Melbourne, has found evidence of a link between a common virus and breast cancer in women under the age of 40 years.
The research suggests that those women who are exposed in adulthood to the virus, cytomegalovirus, may have a greater risk of developing breast cancer , the most common cancer affecting women in New Zealand. 377 women were included in the study, and blood samples were taken to measure antibody levels to cytomegalovirus, and to another virus; Epstein-Barr virus.
"Countries where most people are exposed to cytomegalovirus ...

Questions for Oral Answer
Questions to Ministers
12. Dr LYNDA SCOTT (National-Kaikoura) to the Minister of Health: What was the total cost in the first four months of this year of sending New Zealand cancer patients to Australia for radiation therapy?
Hon RUTH DYSON (Associate Minister of Health), on behalf of the Minister of Health: The Ministry of Health paid $616,000 in additional funding from January to March 2004 for New Zealand cancer patients to go to Australia for radiation therapy. The figures for April 2004 are not yet available.

Cancer Patients Pay Price for Ideology
Press Release by New Zealand National Party at 12 May 2004 16:13
More and more patients are being sent to Australia for private radiation therapy treatment as Labour fails to deal with the crisis in care, says National's Health spokeswoman, Dr Lynda Scott
We have already sent 77 cancer patients to Australia this year for treatment, when in the whole of 2003 we sent only 67.
Dr Scott says Labour's failure has seen a short-term solution turn into a long-term furore. This has put significant stress on patients and the families they are separated from.
"We could treat 2-3 times as many patients in New Zealand if Labour would drop its ideological bent and allow for more private involvement. Instead of developing private-public partnerships, this Government insists on public provisions only.
"It's ironic that while the Government ...

Radiation Therapy Waiting Lists Drop
Press Release by Canterbury District Health Board at 07 May 2004 16:44
Waiting lists for radiation therapy at Christchurch hospital are coming down to the extent that the oncology department is confident they will be reduced to zero by the end of the year.
Dr Chris Wynne, the Clinical Director for Radiation Oncology, told the CDHB Board meeting this morning that there had been a significant reduction in waiting times already.
'This is due in large measure to the dedication of staff in the department who have looked at ways in which we can reduce waiting lists.'
Dr Wynne said improved efficiencies, hard work to find creative solutions and new equipment all contributed to the pleasing result.
Support from management at all levels had been crucial.
'There are now fewer than 30 patients on the waiting list for radiation therapy ...

Breast Cancer Treatment Audit
NewsRoom.co.nz Agency Story at 03 May 2004 17:38
An audit of breast cancer treatment in New Zealand and Australia has found that more than one in seven women who have only part of a breast removed will need a second operation.
The four-year study of 20,000 women found that 15 percent of those who had breast conservation surgery later had to have more tissue taken to treat the cancer .
About half ended up having the breast removed completely.
An Auckland breast surgeon Belinda Scott says this is generally because laboratory tests have found the extent of the cancer is greater than has been diagnosed.
The women more likely to need further surgery are younger, and those with bigger or multiple cancers, Ms Scott says.

Stem Cell Transplants for Patients with Kidney Cancer
Study: New England Journal of Medicine
Date: Sept 2002
Patients with renal cell carcinoma, a form of kidney cancer , may have a new treatment option. Preliminary results of several small studies suggest that moderate dosages of chemotherapy, followed by a blood stem cell transplant, may shrink tumors in patients with metastatic ( cancer that has spread to other parts of the body) renal cell carcinoma. Researchers at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), who pioneered this treatment and have the largest experience to date, first reported their findings in September, 2000 in the New England Journal of Medicine. Nine of 19 patients who had an advanced form of renal cell carcinoma, and who had failed conventional therapies, were alive 287 to 831 days after treatment. The patients had received moderate ...

Stem Cell Transplants Show Promise in Treating Kidney Cancer
A new study shows that blood stem-cell transplants could potentially improve the chances of
millions of people with metastatic kidney cancer . Researchers at the National Institutes of Health
(NIH) conducted a study to test the transplants on advanced kidney (renal cell) cancer —a
particularly deadly kind of cancer . The results of their study are in the September 14, 2000, issue
of The New England Journal of Medicine ( NEJM ).
1
Stem cell transplants use donor blood cells to increase the body's defense against cancer . Stem
cells are immature cells that can develop into specialized cells the body uses for a variety of
functions, from fighting infection to carrying oxygen. The first step in the transplantation process is
giving the recipient (patient) aggressive chemotherapy that destroys both cancerous cells and ...

Experimental Kidney Cancer Therapy That has Shown Promise in Small Study is Being Evaluated at UC San Diego By Troy Brown, R.N. Encouraged by dramatic results from a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study of patients with advanced kidney cancer who received an investigational type of stem-cell transplant, researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Blood and Marrow Transplant Program are now evaluating the procedure in a new clinical study. Advanced kidney cancer is a devastating disease, leaving less than 10 percent of patients alive for more than five years after diagnosis, and killing many within the first year. Until now, these patients have had relatively few treatment options in the face of a rapidly progressing disease. This began to change, however, after a study sponsored by the National ...

New Screening Programme Monitoring
NewsRoom.co.nz Agency Story at 01 May 2004 08:14
The Ministry of Health says new external monitoring arrangements for the breast and cervical cancer screening programmes are expected to be ready in about six months.
Independent monitoring was a recommendation of the Gisborne cervical cancer inquiry and the acting director of Public Health, Ashley Bloomfield, says the ministry is committed to it.
But there has been a breakdown in negotiations between the ministry and Otago University.
The university group monitoring cervical screening stopped work last August and its breast-screening contract ended in June 2002.
Dr Bloomfield says monitoring is continuing within the ministry and independent specialists will review it until a replacement is found for the Otago group.

Kidney cancer involves a number of tumor types located in various areas of the kidney and renal
system. Renal cell cancer (which affects the main area of the kidney ) accounts for over 90% of all
malignant kidney tumors (ACS, 2001). The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be
approximately 31,800 cases of kidney and upper urinary tract cancer , resulting in more than 11,600
deaths in 2002 (ACS, 2002). The incidence and mortality from kidney cancer is higher in urban
areas, which may be due to increased access to diagnostic services and other factors such as smoking.

Incidence and Mortality
Rate Trends
Kidney cancers encompass renal cell and renal
pelvis cancers, which are, respectively, cancer
sites within the main and lower parts of the
kidney . Kidney cancer incidence has been
increasing at a rate of about two percent per
year for the past 65 years; the reasons for this
increase are unclear. Overall mortality rate has
slightly increased over the past two decades,
though not as rapidly as the incidence rate.
Kidney cancer incidence and mortality rates
are nearly twofold higher for men than for
women.

Questions and Answers About Kidney Cancer
What is kidney cancer ?
Kidney cancer is a malignant tumor that develops from the
cells of the kidney It accounts for only about 2% of all
cancers in the U.S. There are three main types of kidney
cancer : renal cell carcinoma, which arises in the part of the
kidney that filters blood and produces urine (the renal
parenchema); transitional cell carcinoma, which arises in
the area of the kidney where urine collects and drains (the
renal pelvis); and Wilms' Tumor (nephroblastoma), which
may arise in embryonic cells in the kidney . About 70% of
kidney cancers are renal cell carcinomas. Wilm's Tumor
occurs mostly in children under the age of 5 and has a
strong genetic link.

Exposure to Ionizing Radiation
Summary:
Strong evidence has been recorded of a possible connection between kidney cancer and
exposure to ionizing radiation. This evidence is based upon studies conducted at Los Alamos National
Laboratory, studies of nuclear workers at other sites, and others exposed to ionizing radiation. These
findings are consistent with the National Research Council’s determination that radiation can cause cancer
of the kidneys and other urinary organs. Kidney cancer is designated as a “specified” cancer under the
