P OINT -C OUNTERPOINT Lymph Node Dissection in Patients With Kidney Cancer : When Is It Indicated? Ganesh S. Palapattu, MD, Hyung L. Kim, MD, Arie S. Belldegrun, MD, FACS Division of Urologic Oncology, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Los Angeles, CA It is necessary to consider the potential risks and benefits of performing a lymph node dissection (LND) at the time of radical nephrectomy. LND may lead to more accurate staging, a decrease in local recurrence, and an increase in survival for patients with metastatic disease limited to the resected lymph nodes. However, there are risks associated with the treatment that must be considered. The advantages of LND vary among patients, depending on the location and extent of disease progression. For patients with stage T3 or T4 disease, we recommend a limited LND. Patients with T3 ...

There were 1,854 cases of invasive cancer of the kidney and renal pelvis diagnosed in 2000 among residents of Pennsylvania, the highest annual number since statewide reporting began in 1985. Males had an average annual (1996-2000) age-adjusted incidence rate twice that of females (17.3 and 8.8 per 100,000, respectively). Annual numbers of cases and age-adjusted incidence rates by sex and race for 1991 through 2000 have all been on the increase. There are few understood causes of kidney cancer ; however, cigarette smoking is an important risk factor. Approximately a quarter of all cases are caused by this behavior. As with age-adjusted rates, age-specific incidence rates were much higher among males for almost all age groups. Nearly 61 percent of the staged cases for 2000 were diagnosed during the localized stage of the disease. During the five-year period of 1996-2000, over 69 percent of the invasive cases of kidney and ...

KIDNEY CANCER WHAT IS KIDNEY CANCER ? Kidney or Renal cell cancer (also called cancer of the kidney , renal adenocarcinoma, clear-cell cancer , or hypernephroma) is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in certain tissues of the kidney . Kidney cancer is one of the less common kinds of cancer . It occurs more often in men than in women and accounts for only 3% of all adult cancers. There will be over 30,000 new cases of kidney cancer every year in the United States. WHAT ARE THE KIDNEYS? The kidneys are a "matched" pair of organs found on either side of your backbone. The kidneys of an adult are about 5 inches long and 3 inches wide and are shaped like a kidney bean. Inside each kidney are tiny tubules that filter and clean your blood, taking out waste products, and making urine. The urine made by each kidney passes ...

Kidney and Renal Pelvis Cancer 42 CANCER INCIDENCE AND MORTALITY IN NEW MEXICO, 1970-1996 Major Epidemiological Features Cancer of the kidney and renal pelvis refers to cancers which arise in the main body of the kidney and in the part of the kidney (renal pelvis) where urine collects before entering the ureter. Roughly four out of five cancers occur in the kidney in the form of renal cell carcinomas. Kidney and renal pelvis cancers are moderately rare cancers, accounting for about 2% of all cancers diagnosed annually in the U.S. Both incidence and mortality have been gradually increasing in the U.S. over the past several decades. Overall age-adjusted annual incidence in SEER regions during 1991-1995 was 9.3 cases per 100,000. Age- adjusted annual mortality in the U.S. during the same time period was 3.5 deaths per 100,000. Incidence and mortality from kidney and renal ...

1 Genetic Basis of Kidney Cancer : Potential for Molecular Targeting W.Marston Linehan,M.D. Urologic oncology Branch National Cancer Institute Cancer of the kidney is made up of a number of different types of cancer . These cancers have different histologies, are caused by different genes and have different clinical courses. Seventy five percent of sporadic renal carcinomas are of the clear cell histologic type; fifteen percent are papillary histology and the remainder are less common histologic types such as chromophobe, oncocytoma, oncocytic neoplasms and collecting duct renal carcinomas. Kidney cancer occurs in a sporadic (non-inherited) as well as a sporadic form. Study of the interited forms of kidney cancer led to the identification of genes involved in the development of the common form of sporadic renal carcinoma. The most well characterized form of hereditary ...

PDF [71,8 KB]  From [www.cancer.org]  Last viewed: 13.07.2004
KIDNEY CANCER (ADULT) - RENAL CELL CARCINOMA What Is Cancer ? Cancer is a group of many related diseases. All forms of cancer cause cells in the body to change and grow in an abnormal way. Normal body cells divide and grow in an orderly fashion. But cancer cells divide and grow out of control. This out-of-control growth damages normal body tissues and disrupts the ability of organs to function as they should. During the early years of a person's life, normal cells divide more rapidly until adult size is reached. After that, normal cells of most tissues divide only to replace worn-out tissue and to repair injuries. Cancer cells, however, continue to grow. Often the cells form tumors (lumps) that compress, invade, and destroy normal tissue. Unless the cancer is treated, the tumors can grow and spread. If cells break away from such a tumor, they can travel through the bloodstream ...
