Are deaths from liver cancer , kidney cancer , and
leukemia clustered in San Antonio?
F. BENJAMIN ZHAN, PHD
INTRODUCTION
Concerns have arisen that cancer mor-
tality rates in San Antonio may be ele-
vated (1,2). For example, Bradshaw
(2) reported high mortality rates of
liver cancer , lung cancer , kidney can-
cer, and leukemia per square mile in
some areas of San Antonio. However,
without consideration of the underly-
ing at-risk population and its associ-
ated demographic characteristics,
mortality rates per square mile alone
may give a misleading picture of cancer
mortality rates in San Antonio. In addi-
tion, to avoid preselection bias, cancer
mortality in the entire state of Texas
should be analyzed first to determine
whether cancer mortality rates are in-
deed excessively higher ...

Understanding Cancer
Cancer begins in cells, the building blocks that make up tissues . Tissues make up the organs of the body.
Normally, cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old, they die,
and new cells take their place.
Sometimes this orderly process goes wrong. New cells form when the body does not need them, and old
cells do not die when they should. These extra cells can form a mass of tissue called a growth or tumor .
Not all tumors are cancer . Tumors can be benign or malignant :
Benign tumors are not cancer :

Benign tumors are rarely life-threatening.

Kidney Cancer (Renal Cancer )
What are the kidneys?
The two kidneys lie to the sides of the upper
abdomen (the loins), behind the intestines, and
either side of the spine. Each kidney is about
the size of a large orange, but bean-shaped.
A large renal artery takes blood to each kidney .
The artery divides into many tiny blood vessels
(capillaries) throughout the kidney . Tiny
structures in the kidneys called nephrons 'filter'
the blood contained in the capillaries. Water and
waste materials which filter through the walls of
the capillaries into the nephrons form urine.
Urine passes along thin channels (tubules)
which are part of each nephron, into larger
channels (ducts) which drain the urine into the
renal pelvis (the inner part of the kidney ).
Urine passes down a tube called a ureter which
goes from each kidney to the bladder. Urine is
stored ...

KIDNEY CANCER AT A GLANCE
What is kidney cancer ?
Kidney cancer is an abnormal, uncontrolled growth of
cells in the kidney . According to the American Cancer
Society, the most common type is renal cell cancer (also
called renal cell carcinoma), which accounts for 85 percent
of all kidney tumors.
Renal cell cancer may develop in one or both kidneys. In
the early stages, kidney cancer usually causes no obvious
signs or symptoms. As kidney cancer grows, it may
invade organs near the kidney such as the liver, colon or
pancreas. Kidney cancer cells may also break away from
the original tumor and spread (or metastasize) to other
parts of the body such as the lymph nodes, bones or
lungs, with about one third of cases showing metastasis
at the time of diagnosis.
How many people get kidney cancer ?

There were 1,974 cases of invasive cancer of the kidney and renal pelvis diagnosed in 2001 among residents of Pennsylvania, the
highest annual number since statewide reporting began in 1985. Males had an average annual (1997-2001) age-adjusted incidence

Kidney Cancer
What are the Kidneys?
The kidneys are two bean-shaped
organs located behind the abdomen on
each side of the spine. The main job of
the kidneys is to filter the blood and rid
the body of liquid waste through the
bladder. They also control the
production of red blood cells and
regulate blood pressure.
What is Kidney Cancer?
In adults, the most common type of
kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma
which begins in the cells that line the
small tubes (tubules) within the
kidneys. It accounts for more than 90
percent of cancerous kidney tumors.
Children are more likely to develop a
kind of kidney cancer called Wilms’
tumor.
What are the risk factors?
Cigarette smoking increases the risk of
developing renal cell carcinoma by
about 40 percent. The risk decreases
after smoking stops. Other risks
include ...

Nephrectomy (Removal of the Kidney )
Kidney cancer is a common malignancy with over 30,000 patients afflicted in the United
States per year. The incidence of kidney cancer is increasing which is partially due to
the increased use of cross-sectional imaging such as CT and MRI. At the UCSF
Comprehensive Cancer Center, we provide state-of -the-art care to the entire spectrum
of patients with renal cancer , from those with suspicious x-rays without a diagnosis to
the care of patients with advanced or recurrent kidney cancer .
Surgical removal of the cancer is the most effective form of treatment for patients
whose cancer is confined to the kidney . Traditionally this has been through a procedure
called radical nephrectomy. Radical nephrectomy is an open surgical procedure
performed through an abdominal or flank incision during which the kidney , the fat
surrounding the kidney and the adrenal gland or ...

Summary
During 1992–1997, one-year relative survival after diagnosis of cancer of the kidney was
77.2% for males and 73.5% for females, and five-year relative survival was 59.9% for males
and 57.5% for females (Table 17.1). Relative survival ten years after diagnosis was 47.7% for
males and 46.2% for females in 1987–1991, the most recent period for which ten-year relative
survival data are available (Figure 17.2; Tables 17.2 and 17.3).
Between 1982–1986 and 1992–1997, kidney cancer relative survival increased significantly.
Five-year relative survival increased from 50.8% to 59.9% for males and increased from
49.4% to 57.5%for females. There was no significant change one year after diagnosis for
males whereas for females, relative survival after one year increased from 67.4% to 73.5%
(Figure 17.2; Tables 17.2 and 17.3).

Physicians call renal-cell cancer a silent malignancy because it usually develops in people
without producing pain or other symptoms. If the cancer , which seldom responds to drugs, is
detected while still confined to a kidney , removing that organ can save a patient. In most
cases, however, this stealthy cancer spreads before it’s found and on average, is fatal within a
year of diagnosis.
Researchers now report some success in fighting this kidney cancer by using blood from a
healthy sibling donor and enabling immune cells in it to take control of the cancer patient’s
immune system. In 8 of 19 patients given this therapy, donor immune cells attacked the can-

The company, Genetics Institute, in Cambridge, Mass., has declined to describe the symp-

company spokesman Dennis Harp.
Initial information, Harp notes, indicates that the hospitalized participants appear to suffer
from more severe versions of side effects observed in four preliminary clinical trials. The com-
pany has yet to make those side effects public.
Preliminary, or phase I, clinical trials are meant to establish safe dosages of an experimen-

Kidney cancer
The kidneys are part of the urinary system. The human
body has two kidneys, one on either side of the middle of
the back, just under the ribs. The kidneys:
•
Remove waste products from the blood.
•
Produce hormones that regulate blood
pressure, control the body's calcium levels,
and trigger the production of red blood cells in
bones.
Around 85 per cent of kidney cancers are renal cell
carcinomas. Cancer cells initially grow in the lining of one
or both kidneys. Without treatment, the cancer may
spread to other areas of the body. Kidney cancer is more
common in people over the age of 55 years. It is more
common in men than women. About 500 Victorians are

Kidney cancer
The kidneys are part of the urinary system. The human
body has two kidneys, one on either side of the middle of
the back, just under the ribs. The kidneys:
•
Remove waste products from the blood.
•
Produce hormones that regulate blood
pressure, control the body's calcium levels,
and trigger the production of red blood cells in
bones.
Around 85 per cent of kidney cancers are renal cell
carcinomas. Cancer cells initially grow in the lining of one
or both kidneys. Without treatment, the cancer may
spread to other areas of the body. Kidney cancer is more
common in people over the age of 55 years. It is more
common in men than women. About 500 Victorians are
diagnosed with kidney cancer every year.

Kidney Cancer Vaccine Shows Promise in Trial
Sunday February 22, 2004 (1521 PST)
ISLAMABAD, February 23 (Online):
An experimental vaccine against kidney cancer has shown promising
results in reducing the recurrence of the disease, German researchers said.
Kidney cancer occurs mostly in adults over 40 and accounts for about
three percent of all cancers. About 32,000 new cases are diagnosed each
year in the United States alone.
In a trial of 379 kidney cancer patients, scientists showed that the vaccine made by
German biotechnology company LipoNova improved disease-free survival of
patients.
"For the first time ever it has been shown that additional therapy after surgery for
kidney tumors is effective," said Dr Christian Doehn of the University of Lubeck
Medical School in Germany.
Five-year survival rates were 77 percent for patients who were given six injections ...
