Kidney Cancer Alliance Takes Action!
Members Urged to Take Action Now to Increase Research Funding
(PRWEB) May 24, 2004 -- Members of the Kidney Cancer Association (KCA) have joined One Voice
Against Cancer (OVAC) in urging Congress to take action to cure kidney cancer and other deadly diseases by
significantly increasing federal funding for programs that benefit cancer patients and their families.
KCA Volunteer Governmental Affairs Committee Chair, Sarah Wise, says in Fiscal Year 2005, Congress
should take action to provide:
• $30.25 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) ($2.37 billion increase). We appreciate the
Congressional and Presidential commitment to privatizing research on health matters, demonstrated by the
five year commitment to double the NIH budget. While appreciative of the hard work that went into achieving
last year's 3% increase at NIH, KCA is concerned that dramatic drops in investment ...

Kidney cancer
The kidneys are part of the urinary system. The human
body has two kidneys, one on either side of the middle of
the back, just under the ribs. The kidneys:
•
Remove waste products from the blood.
•
Produce hormones that regulate blood
pressure, control the body's calcium levels,
and trigger the production of red blood cells in
bones.
Around 85 per cent of kidney cancers are renal cell
carcinomas. Cancer cells initially grow in the lining of one
or both kidneys. Without treatment, the cancer may
spread to other areas of the body. Kidney cancer is more
common in people over the age of 55 years. It is more
common in men than women. About 500 Victorians are
diagnosed with kidney cancer every year.
Symptoms
In its early stages, kidney cancer may have no symptoms.
The disease may be discovered by accident, when the ...

Kidney Cancer Association Supports Advocacy Summit
Patient-led organization provides financial support to National Cancer Institute meeting
New York, NY (PRWEB) March 24, 2006 -- The Kidney Cancer Association (KCA) today announced a
$5-thousand grant to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in support of a summer
meeting for cancer advocates in Bethesda, Md.
Listening and Learning Together: Building a Bridge of Trust, a summit hosted for the cancer advocacy
community by the National Cancer Institute Director's Consumer Liaison Group (DCLG), will be held
June 19 - 20 in the Natcher Conference Center on the NIH campus.
"This meeting affords cancer advocates an excellent opportunity to learn from experts about the latest
NCI scientific programs," said KCA president Bill Bro, a member of the DCLG. "We believe there will be
an excellent turnout for this first-of-its-kind ...

Kidney Cancer (Renal Cancer )
What are the kidneys?
The two kidneys lie to the sides of the upper
abdomen (the loins), behind the intestines, and
either side of the spine. Each kidney is about
the size of a large orange, but bean-shaped.
A large renal artery takes blood to each kidney .
The artery divides into many tiny blood vessels
(capillaries) throughout the kidney . Tiny
structures in the kidneys called nephrons 'filter'
the blood contained in the capillaries. Water and
waste materials which filter through the walls of
the capillaries into the nephrons form urine.
Urine passes along thin channels (tubules)
which are part of each nephron, into larger
channels (ducts) which drain the urine into the
renal pelvis (the inner part of the kidney ).
Urine passes down a tube called a ureter which
goes from each kidney to the bladder. Urine is
stored ...
