Henk Verheul, M.D., Ph.D. receives 2006 Young Investigator Award.
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) March 23, 2006 -- The Kidney Cancer Association (KCA) today announced the
selection of Henk Verheul, M.D., Ph.D. as recipient of the 2006 ASCO Young Investigator Award funded by a
grant from the KCA.
"The KCA is taking action to cure kidney cancer by continuing our expansion of collaboration on research
projects," said KCA president Bill Bro. "In addition to Dr. Verheul's important work, we're also currently
involved with three statistical research projects, including that of our international staging group," Bro added.
"Two of these projects encourage the direct participation of patients. This gives families an opportunity to do
something that will benefit others whose lives are touched by this dreadful disease. Anyone who would like to

Action to Cure Kidney Cancer awards a $45,000 grant to Paul Cairns, Ph.D., a member of the
medical science division of Fox Chase Cancer Center, to purchase a state-of-the-art DNA
enhancing machine to assist his work in developing a urine screening test that will detect early
stage kidney cancer .
New York, NY (PRWEB) March 20, 2006 -- Action to Cure Kidney Cancer (ACKC) awards $45,000 to Paul
Cairns to purchase a real-time PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) system that will expedite his work in the
development of a urine-screening test for early stage kidney cancer as well as his research in the monitoring of
treatment for the disease. This technology will enable Dr. Cairns to identify one cancer cell in 10,000 normal
cells, a tenfold increase in accuracy over previous technology.

Each year, 36,000 Americans are diagnosed with
kidney cancer . The vast majority of these patients
suffer from renal cell carcinoma, a malignancy
in the tissue cells where blood is filtered into
urine. Most kidney cancers are primary tumors
meaning they originate in the kidney rather than
spreading from other areas of the body. They
can still be deadly if not found early and treated
aggressively.
Fortunately, urologists—doctors who specialize
in diseases of the male and female urinary tracts
and the male reproductive system—have effective
ways today to diagnose and treat kidney cancer ,
especially if it is caught early. Imaging tests
that involve little or no discomfort for patients
allow physicians to pinpoint these malignancies
with accuracy, efficiency and relative speed.

Kidney Cancer
This is a malignant tumour of the kidney . It consists of cells that are no longer
under normal control and have acquired the ability to grow uncontrollably and to
spread beyond the site of origin into nearby organs(local spread) or distant
organs (metastasis). There are several types of cancer of the kidney , but the
commonest is renal cell cancer . This usually occurs in middle aged and older
people.
The kidneys are paired organs in the back of the abdomen that filter the blood to
remove waste products which are excreted in the urine. Urine passes from the
kidneys to the bladder for storage till a convenient time for voiding.
Symptoms
Blood in urine. There may occasionally be blood clots.
Lump in the abdomen.
Pain in the kidney area.
Weight loss in advanced cases.

Kidney cancer
Kidney cancer involves a number of tumor types located in various areas of the kidney and renal system.
Renal cell cancer (which affects the main area of the kidney ) accounts for over 90% of all malignant
kidney tumors (ACS, 2001). The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be approximately
36,160 cases of kidney and upper urinary tract cancer , resulting in more than 12,660 deaths in 2005
(ACS, 2004). The incidence and mortality from kidney cancer is higher in urban areas, which may be
due to increased access to diagnostic services and other factors such as smoking. Kidney cancer is twice
as common in males as it is in females and the incidence most often occurs in the fifth ...

We investigated renal function of 99 pediatric long-term survivors of leukemia and solid tumors
treated according to standard protocols. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was assessed with the
cystatin C method. Proximal tubular function was characterized by urinary ?-Nag-ase enzyme
activity and microalbuminuria. Distal tubular function was determined by serum/urine osmolarity.
We performed genomic PCR to determine a possible influence of I/D polimorphism of the
angiotensin convertase (ACE) gene on late nephrotoxicity. Endogenous antioxidant level, was
determined according to beef-brain autooxidation method. Kidney function of patients was
compared to that of 86 age- and sex-matched ...
