E-mail: druckerb@mskcc.org Current Urology Reports 2002, 3 :31 –36 Current Science Inc. ISSN 1527-2737 Copyright © 2002 by Current Science Inc. Introduction The incidence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is estimated to be approximately 26,000 new cases per year in the United States, with a death rate of 10,000 patients per year [1]. At the time of diagnosis, approximately 50% of patients have disease localized to the kidney , 20% of patients have locally advanced disease, and the remaining 30% of patients have distant metastases [1]. At present, surgical resection of all discernible disease is the only potentially curative therapy and is rarely an option for patients ...

RISK FACTOR INFORMATION FOR SELECTED CANCER TYPES Source: Community Assessment Unit, Bureau of Environmental Health Assessment, Massachusetts Department of Public Health. July, 2001 Kidney cancer Kidney cancer involves a number of tumor types located in various areas of the kidney and renal system. Renal cell cancer ( which affects the main area of the kidney) accounts for over 90% of all malignant kidney tumors (ACS, 2001). The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be approximately 30,800 cases of kidney and upper urinary tract cancer, resulting in more than 12,100 deaths in 2001 (ACS, 2001). The incidence and mortality from kidney cancer is higher in urban areas, which may be due to increased access to screening and other factors such as smoking. Kidney cancer is twice as common in males as it is in females and the incidence most often occurs in the fifth and ...

3 3 New Vaccine Extends Prostate Cancer Survival A new vaccine is the first to extend survival among men with advanced prostate cancer . Men with advanced prostate cancer that is resis- tant to hormone-blocking therapy survive four and a half months longer, on average, with the new vaccine treatment, according to the results of a clinical trial led by UCSF urologic oncologist and Cancer Center member Eric Small. The phase III clinical trial included 127 men and was conducted at 19 sites across the country. Men received three infusions of either the vaccine or a placebo over a four-week period. Survival of men who received the vaccine aver- aged 25.9 months, compared with 21.4 months for men who received placebo. The only significant side effects reported were flu-like symptoms last- ing one or two days. Three years after the start of treatment, ...

National Cancer Institute SEER Program 56 KIDNEY AND RENAL PELVIS H istorically, incidence rates for kidney cancer have included cancers of the renal cells (in the main part of the kidney ) and the renal pelvis (the lower part of the kidney where urine collects before entering the ureter and continuing to the bladder), although there is evidence that these cancers have different characteristics. They are presented together here for continuity. About one of five kidney cancers occur in the renal pelvis. Internationally, the highest incidence rates occur in the United States, Canada, Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. The lowest rates are in Thailand, China, and the Philippines. Rates in these countries are about one-third the rates in the high risk countries. During the years 1988 to 1992, in the ...

CANCER OF THE KIDNEY MEDICAL APPENDIX (including renal cell carcinoma, hypernephroma, nephroblastoma, Wilms’ tumour, squamous cell carcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma, sarcoma) DEFINITION 1. Cancer is a term which embraces a large number of different diseases, the common feature of which is a malignant tumour. This is a growth (neoplasm) which is not circumscribed but which infiltrates the surrounding tissues and metastasises (spreads to other sites in the body), thereby producing secondary deposits. Any tissue in the body may be affected. 2. Cancers are classified according to the tissue of origin. Carcinoma arises from epithelial tissue and sarcoma from connective tissue. The suffix blastoma implies a tumour of embryonic origin. 3. There are three main types of cancer of the kidney : 3.1. Nephroblastoma (Wilms’ tumour) is a rare tumour, occurring in ...

In 2002, there were 2,031 cases of invasive cancer of the kidney and renal pelvis diagnosed among residents of Pennsylvania, the highest annual number since statewide reporting began in 1985. Males had an average annual (1998-2002) age-adjusted incidence rate approximately twice that of females (18.3 and 9.4 per 100,000, respectively). For the years 1993 through 2002, annual numbers of cases and age-adjusted incidence rates for white and black males and white females have been on the increase. Among black females, the annual incidence rates for this ten-year period increased though 1998 and then decreased through 2001. There are few understood causes of kidney cancer; however, cigarette smoking is an important risk factor. Approximately a quarter of all cases are caused by this behavior. As with age-adjusted rates, age-specific incidence rates were much higher among males for almost all age groups. Over 61 percent of the cases for ...

Page 2 Cancer FAQs What are the different types of kidney cancer? By far the most common type of kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma , accounting for about 85 percent of cases. There are five main forms of renal cell cancers, each differentiated by the way the cancerous cells appear under a microscope. They include: clear cell (about 70–80 percent of renal cell cancers), papillary (about 10–15 percent of renal cell cancers), chromophobe (about 5 percent), collecting duct (very rare), and “unclassified,” which means the appearance of the cancer cells doesn’t fit into any of the other four main categories (about 5 percent).
