Kidney Cancer
The National Cancer Institute ( http://www. cancer. gov/ ), lists kidney cancer as one of 13
common causes of cancer and provides the following information.
To obtain a free copy of this document, go to www.masterdocs.com .
Understanding Cancer
Cancer begins in cells, the building blocks that make up tissues . Tissues make up the organs of the body.
Normally, cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old, they die,
and new cells take their place.
Sometimes this orderly process goes wrong. New cells form when the body does not need them, and old
cells do not die when they should. These extra cells can form a mass of tissue called a growth or tumor .
Not all tumors are cancer. Tumors can be benign or malignant :
Benign tumors are not cancer:
•
Benign tumors are rarely life-threatening.

This review article presents kidney cancer epidemiology as well as main environmental and life style risk factors.
INTRODUCTION
Kidney cancer is the most important cancer site be-
cause of high lethality rates and increasing incidence in
some parts of the world mainly among all Caucasian popu-
lations and in Japan. There were approximately 189 000
kidney cancers in the year 2000 worldwide, two-thirds
of which occurred in developed countries

KIDNEY CANCER AT A GLANCE
What is kidney cancer?
Kidney cancer is an abnormal, uncontrolled growth of
cells in the kidney. According to the American Cancer
Society, the most common type is renal cell cancer ( also
called renal cell carcinoma), which accounts for 85 percent
of all kidney tumors.
Renal cell cancer may develop in one or both kidneys. In
the early stages, kidney cancer usually causes no obvious
signs or symptoms. As kidney cancer grows, it may
invade organs near the kidney such as the liver, colon or
pancreas. Kidney cancer cells may also break away from
the original tumor and spread (or metastasize) to other
parts of the body such as the lymph nodes, bones or
lungs, with about one third of cases showing metastasis
at the time of diagnosis.

Merix Bioscience Launches Trial for New Kidney Cancer Vaccine
Merix Bioscience, Inc. : gibbs-soell.com
Durham, N.C. – June 8, 2004 – Durham-based Merix Bioscience, a company pioneering therapeutic cancer
vaccines, announced its first corporate-sponsored clinical trial, a trial with potential significant impact on
the future treatment of kidney ( renal) cancer. The trial for an RNA-loaded autologous dendritic cell vaccine
is now in Phase I/II study at five clinical sites in the United States and Canada.
“We have developed a cancer vaccine that harnesses the ability of an individual’s immune system to fight
disease,” said Clint G. (Skip) Dederick, Jr., chairman, president and CEO of Merix. “We strongly believe
that by utilizing an individual patient’s tumor antigens to create a personalized vaccine, we can induce the
broadest possible immune response and maximize the anti-tumor responses.” ...

Ki dney Ca ncer Va ccine Shows Promise in Trial
Sunday February 22, 2004 (1521 PST)
ISLAMABAD, February 23 (Online):
An experimental vaccine against ki dney ca ncer ha s shown promising
results in reducing the recurrence of the disease, German researchers said.
Ki dney ca ncer oc curs mostly in adults over 40 and accounts for about
three percent of all cancers. About 32,000 new cases are diagnosed each
year in the United States alone.
In a trial of 379 ki dney ca ncer pa tients, scientists showed that the vaccine made by
German biotechnology company LipoNova improved disease-free survival of
patients.
"For the first time ever it has been shown that additional therapy after surgery for
ki dney tu mors is effective," said Dr Christian Doehn of the University of Lubeck
Medical School in Germany.
Five-year survival rates were 77 percent for patients who were given six injections ...
