Kidney cancer
The kidneys are part of the urinary system. The human
body has two kidneys, one on either side of the middle of
the back, just under the ribs. The kidneys:
•
Remove waste products from the blood.
•
Produce hormones that regulate blood
pressure, control the body's calcium levels,
and trigger the production of red blood cells in
bones.
Around 85 per cent of kidney cancers are renal cell
carcinomas. Cancer cells initially grow in the lining of one
or both kidneys. Without treatment, the cancer may
spread to other areas of the body. Kidney cancer is more
common in people over the age of 55 years. It is more
common in men than women. About 500 Victorians are
diagnosed with kidney cancer every year.
Symptoms
In its early stages, kidney cancer may have no symptoms.
The disease may be discovered by accident, when the ...

Profiling kidney cancer using DNA macroarrays
The Joint Research Centre (JRC), a Directorate-General of the European
Commission, uses DNA macroarray technology to identify specific gene
patterns to diagnose renal cell carcinoma. Preliminary results indicate complex
genetic mechanisms are involved in kidney cancer . This research could help
identify DNA characteristics, leading to a better molecular understanding of
renal tumours, and accelerate identification of new prognostic markers or
therapeutic targets.
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) comprises 3% of cancer malignancies worldwide, and is
increasing. Only a fraction of RCCs respond to radio-, immuno-, or chemotherapy,
making control difficult once spread beyond ...

Cancer in Northern Ireland 1993 - 2001: A Comprehensive Report 105
18: Cancer of the Kidney (C64-C66, C68)
Incidence
In 2001, cancer of the kidney was the tenth most common cancer in males and the thirteenth
commonest in females. On average, 99 males and 65 females were diagnosed as having cancer
of the kidney each year, accounting for about 2% of male and 1% of female cancers.
Age
Given the levels of disease in 2001, the risk of getting cancer of the kidney before the age of 75
years was 1 in 85 for males and 1 in 172 for females (Table 18a). Fifty percent of males were
diagnosed under the age of 67 years, whilst for females it was 68 years. The average annual
incidence for cancer of the kidney rose in males and females up to 70-74 years, with the age-
specific rates consistently higher in males (Figure 18a).

Kidney Cancer Vaccine Shows Promise in Trial
Sunday February 22, 2004 (1521 PST)
ISLAMABAD, February 23 (Online):
An experimental vaccine against kidney cancer has shown promising
results in reducing the recurrence of the disease, German researchers said.
Kidney cancer occurs mostly in adults over 40 and accounts for about
three percent of all cancers. About 32,000 new cases are diagnosed each
year in the United States alone.
In a trial of 379 kidney cancer patients, scientists showed that the vaccine made by
German biotechnology company LipoNova improved disease-free survival of
patients.
"For the first time ever it has been shown that additional therapy after surgery for
kidney tumors is effective," said Dr Christian Doehn of the University of Lubeck
Medical School in Germany.
Five-year survival rates were 77 percent for patients who were given six injections ...

KIDNEY CANCER (ADULT) - RENAL CELL CARCINOMA
What Is Cancer ?
Cancer develops when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Although there are many kinds of cancer , they all start
because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells.
Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a person's life, normal cells divide more
rapidly until the person becomes an adult. After that, cells in most parts of the body divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells and
to repair injuries.
Because cancer cells continue to grow and divide, they are different from normal cells. Instead of dying, they outlive normal cells and
continue to form new abnormal cells.
Cancer cells develop because of damage to DNA. This substance is in every cell and directs all its activities. Most of the time when ...

Therapies targeted for kidney cancer

Adele Weiland is an expert on kidney cancer medications. After all, she
has tried most of them. Doctors have prescribed one experimental
therapy after another over the past three years. Although nothing has
cured her disease, each drug has kept her alive long enough to try the
next new medication.
"I know something is going to get me one of these days," says Weiland,
70, of Columbus, Ohio, whose disease has spread to her pancreas, liver
and small intestine. "But 10 years ago, I wouldn't have all these options."
After decades of relatively little progress against kidney cancer ,
researchers are testing a small arsenal of new drugs, says William Li,
president of Angiogenesis Foundation, a non-profit organization devoted
to developing new therapies.

Questions and Answers
1. Q. Why did the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH)
recommend conducting a follow-up study of the people diagnosed with
kidney cancer in the South End of New Bedford?
A. The results of the previous MDPH cancer study indicated that most of the
cancer types evaluated occurred at or near the expected rates during 1982 through
1998 in New Bedford with the exception of kidney cancer . The study results
showed a concentration of five individuals with kidney cancer living in close
proximity to the Rodney Metals and Brittany Dye facilities. At the time of the
investigation, MDPH did not have enough information about important risk
factors for the disease, such as family medical history, occupational exposure, and
history of smoking, making it difficult to assess the role that environmental
exposures may have played in the development of kidney cancer .
