Umesh Kapil et al Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention, Vol 6, 2005 202 Asian Pacific J Cancer Prev, 6 , 202-207 RESEARCH COMMUNICATION Introduction Cancer continues to be a major health problem despite advances in medical technology for its diagnosis and treatment. Cancer of the larynx is fourteenth most common cancer in the world. In 1996, an estimated 190,000 new cases of laryngeal cancer were diagnosed worldwide, accounting for 1.8 percent of all new cancers (WHO, 1997). Sixty percent of the global incidence of laryngeal cancer is found in developing countries. In India, the incidence of laryngeal cancer has been reported to be 1.3 to 8.8 per 1,00,000 population, in six different regions in the country (ICMR, 1992). Several epidemiological studies suggest that smoking and chewing of tobacco are risk factors for cancer and ...

Laryngeal Cancer Laryngeal cancer is a malignant tumor of the larynx. The larynx is also called the voice box and is located at the top of the windpipe (trachea). The larynx is used to talk, swallow, and breath. How common is laryngeal cancer? In the U.S., over 12,000 people a year are diagnosed with cancer of the larynx. Most of those diagnosed are over the age of 55. Laryngeal cancer is four times more common in men than women. African-Americans are also more commonly affected than Caucasians. What are the causes of laryngeal cancer? Many factors are involved in the development of cancer. The most dominant risk factor for cancer of the larynx is cigarette smoke. The risk is proportional to the amount of exposure to tobacco smoke. Smokers who also drink alcohol heavily are at an increased risk for the development of laryngeal cancer. Smokers can markedly reduce their risk of cancer ...

HISTORICAL CASE REPORT Giacomo Puccini's laryngeal cancer : a Belgian recollection Tainmont J. W. Churchill Avenue 172, 1180 Brussels, Belgium Introduction and Aim Until now, it does not seem that Belgian ENT specialists were particularly interested concerning the treatment of Giacomo Puccini's laryngeal cancer applied by the late dr Louis Ledoux from Brussels. We decided to present this paper at once to pay homage to the latter and to enrich Puccini's memory with a specifically Belgian contribution. Case report A chronicle of the last weeks of Puccini's life is presented: 4th of November 1924: arrival in Brussels; 7th: radium collar; 24th: fenestration of the thyroid cartilage and implantation of 7 radium needles in the tumour. 29th: death. This is enriched by some details of Belgian origin. At the same time, we propose a reminder of the scientific contribution of dr Ledoux to the 1920's medical ...

Laryngeal Cancer Epidemiology The Rhein-Neckar-Larynx Study Project team : Heiko Becher, Heribert Ramroth External collaborators: Andreas Dietz, Leipzig; Wolfgang Ahrens, Bremen; Angela Risch, DKFZ Heidelberg; Peter Schmezer, DKFZ Heidelberg The Rhein-Neckar-Larynx Study is a population-based case-control study 1:3 frequency matched by age and sex on laryngeal cancer in South-West Germany with 257 cases, histologically confirmed and diagnosed between 1.5.1998 and 31.12.2000 and 769 population controls. Information about occupational exposures, lifestyle factors and socio demographic background were obtained with face-to-face interviews using a detailed standardized questionnaire. As expected, highest risks on laryngeal cancer were found for smoking and alcohol consumption. For occupational exposures we found higher risks for polycyclic aromatic carbons, cement dust and wood dust, but ...
