The Effect of Arsenic Trioxide (ATO)

ABSTRACT
Studies into the effects of toxins on cancer cells provide clues on how to induce apoptosis of
malignant cells. Arsenic Trioxide (ATO) may be effective in inducing apoptosis in rapidly dividing
cells. Arsenic compounds have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years.
Commonly known as a poison, it is also used to treat a variety of ailments from syphilis to cancer.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved ATO for treatment against acute promyelocytic

Abstract
We did a retrospective study of all acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) patients on United Kingdom ALL protocol who were admitted
for febrile neutropenia. The aim of the study was to document the types of infections and aetiological agents associated with febrile
neutropenia and to document the factors affecting mortality. Over the 8

LEUKAEMIA
MEDICAL APPENDIX
DEFINITION
1.
The leukaemias are a group of diseases affecting the lymphatic and reticulo-
endothelial systems, including the bone marrow, resulting in over production of
abnormal leucocytes, with or without an increase in these cells in the circulating
blood, and infiltration of various structures. Leukaemias are neoplastic diseases and
may be regarded as cancers of the haemopoietic organs. They account for 2% of all
cancers and of cancer deaths world-wide and 3% of all new malignancies in the UK.
NORMAL BLOOD AND BONE MARROW
2.
Normal blood contains three main groups of cells: red cells, leucocytes and platelets.
The cyclic process of their production, circulation, removal and renewal is not yet fully
understood. In health, a balance is maintained and the numbers of these formed
elements is remarkably constant.
3.
All mature blood cells derive from stem ...

INVITATION TO BE A PATRON OF THE TRUST
The Dwib Leukaemia Trust (Ghana) has been formed with the aim to increase awareness
of leukaemia in the West African sub-Region and create access to effective diagnostic
and treatment resources. Most of all, it aims to set up the first bone marrow register in
West Africa, possibly at the Korle- bu Teaching Hospital.
We acknowledge with deep respect your singular achievements in your field of
endeavour and your interest in progress and development. It is in the light of this that we
feel honoured to invite you to become a patron of the organization. We believe that your
credibility and respect will greatly enhance the achievements of the Trust’s noble aims
and objectives.

In recent years, significant advances have been made in the understanding of malignant
diseases; leading to significant improvements in the survival rate. Among the various neoplastic
conditions the improvements in the morbidity and mortality figures in acute leukaemia show
perhaps the best results. While the diagnosis of acute leukaemia carried with it grave prognostic
implications as recently as ten years ago, it is possible today to speak of a "cure” with chemo-

What is leukaemia ?
Leukaemia is a cancer of cells in the bone marrow (the cells which develop into blood cells).
Cancer is a disease of the cells in the body. There are many types of cancer which arise from
different types of cell. What all cancers have in common is that the cancer cells are abnormal and
do not respond to normal control mechanisms. Large numbers of cancer cells build up because
they multiply 'out of control', or because they live much longer than normal cells, or both.
With leukaemia , the cancerous cells in the bone marrow spill out into the bloodstream. There are
several types of leukaemia . Most types arise from cells which normally develop into white blood
cells. (The word leukaemia comes from a greek work which means 'white blood'.) If you develop
leukaemia it is important to know exactly what type it is. This is because the outlook (prognosis) ...
