With these words, spoken at a lecture in Berlin in 1858, Robert Virchow generously acknowledged that John Hughes Bennett's description of chronic myeloid leukaemia in Edinburgh in 1845 preceded his by a short period and called a truce to the unseemly controversy which had marred its discovery.’   Rudolf Virchow (1821-1902)             Chronic myeloid leukaemia   The patient , a 49yr old teacher, saw her family physician because of fatigue for about six months. ...

95 RECENT ADVANCES IN THE THERAPY OF ACUTE LEUKAEMIA * HAU C. KWAAN, M.D., F.R.C.P. (EDIN.), F.A.C.P. From the Department of Medicine, Northwestern University Medical School, and the Haematology Section, Veterans Administration Research Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. In recent years, significant advances have been made in the understanding of malignant diseases; leading to significant improvements in the survival rate. Among the various neoplastic conditions the improvements in the morbidity and mortality figures in acute leukaemia show perhaps the best results. While the diagnosis of acute leukaemia carried with it grave prognostic implications as recently as ten years ago, it is possible today to speak of a "cure” with chemo- therapy. I would like to discuss the following key factors that are contributing ...

Our achievements in blood cell cancer research Over the past 25 years or so, The Institute and the Royal Marsden have achieved a notable track record in haemato-oncology research. Under Professor Ray Powles, the previous Head of the Leukaemia and Myeloma Units, the first European bone marrow transplant programme was established in the 1970s. Following his appointment in 1988 as Chair of the Academic Department of Haematology and Cytogenetics, Professor Daniel Catovsky established our campus as a leading centre for laboratory research on and treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia . Since arriving in the Chester Beatty Laboratories some 20 years ago, my own team in the Leukaemia Research Fund Centre has focused on the cell and molecular biology of childhood leukaemia . In the past year we have witnessed the culmination of our efforts over a long period ...

The Leukaemia Foundation • The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the care and cure of patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. How these diseases change lives • Approximately 7,300 people are diagnosed with leukaemias, lymphomas and myeloma each year; the equivalent of 20 people per day. Of these, approximately 53% are diagnosed with lymphomas, 33% with leukaemias and another 14% with myeloma. • The diseases often develop with little warning, requiring immediate and intensive treatment. In acute cases, families often need to uproot their lives and relocate virtually overnight. In reality it means leaving work, school, family commitments and friends while dealing with the emotional turmoil of diagnosis and immediate treatment. • They can develop in anyone, of any age, at any time. ...
