This document provides a profile of trends in mortality for lymphoid leukaemia
in England. The period covered is January 1 1996 to December 31 2004. The
data are analysed from mortality files supplied to the South East England
Public Health Observatories (SEPHO) by the Office for National Statistics
(ONS). Mortality rates were calculated for the condition certified as the
underlying cause of death and for the disease certified as any mention on the
death certificates. Age-specific ...

Exposure to 50-Hz Electric Field and Incidence of Leukaemia , Brain
Tumors, and Other Cancers among French Electric Utility Workers
Pascal Guenel, Javier Nicolau, Ellen Imbernon, Ann Chevalier, and Marcel Goldberg
Recent studies on the association between exposure to 50-to 60-Hz fields and cancer
carried out among electric utility workers have focused mainly on the magnetic field
component of exposure. The authors have investigated tumor risks specifically
associated with electric fields, as this exposure is distinct from magnetic fields. The
study design is a case-control study nested within a cohort of 170,000 workers
employed at Electricite de France-Gaz de France (EDF) between 1978 and 1989. All
incident cases of cancer and benign tumor of the brain diagnosed in 1978 1989 among
workers before the age of retirement were included. Four randomly selected controls
were individually matched to each case ...

Leukaemia
Introduction
Leukaemias are a group of cancers which can occur in
people of any age. Leukaemias are disorders of blood
cell production that result in the body accumulating
abnormal blood cells.
Normally the body's cells are replaced by dividing in an
orderly way, allowing your body to grow and to heal after
an injury. Sometimes some cells act in an abnormal way
and may grow into a lump which is called a tumour.
Tumours can be benign (not a cancer) or malignant (a
cancer). Malignant tumours can spread to other parts of
the body forming secondary cancer deposits in other areas
of the body.
In leukaemia it is the blood-forming cells which multiply
abnormally and grow out of control. Even though
leukaemias may not produce lumps they are still a type
of cancer. These cancers may be either leukaemias or
lymphomas .

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL)
What is leukaemia ?
Leukaemia is a cancer of cells in the bone marrow (the cells which develop into blood cells).
Cancer is a disease of the cells in the body. There are many types of cancer which arise from
different types of cell. What all cancers have in common is that the cancer cells are abnormal and
do not respond to normal control mechanisms. Large numbers of cancer cells build up because
they multiply 'out of control', or because they live much longer than normal cells, or both.
With leukaemia , the cancerous cells in the bone marrow spill out into the bloodstream. There are
several types of leukaemia . Most types arise from cells which normally develop into white blood
cells. (The word leukaemia comes from a greek work which means 'white blood'.) If you develop
leukaemia it is important to know exactly what type it is. This is because the outlook (prognosis) ...

The Leukaemia Foundation
•
The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national not-for-profit organisation dedicated
to the care and cure of patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas,
myeloma and related blood disorders.
How these diseases change lives
•
Approximately 7,300 people are diagnosed with leukaemias, lymphomas and
myeloma each year; the equivalent of 20 people per day. Of these, approximately
53% are diagnosed with lymphomas, 33% with leukaemias and another 14% with
myeloma.
•
The diseases often develop with little warning, requiring immediate and intensive
treatment. In acute cases, families often need to uproot their lives and relocate
virtually overnight. In reality it means leaving work, school, family commitments
and friends while dealing with the emotional turmoil of diagnosis and immediate
treatment.

They can develop in anyone, of any age, at any time. ...

Guidelines on the diagnosis and management of chronic
lymphocytic leukaemia
Methods
The purpose of this guideline is to provide a rational approach
to the diagnosis and management of patients with chronic
lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL).
This guideline has been compiled by the Guidelines
Working Group of the UK CLL Forum on behalf of the
British Committee for Standards in Haematology (BCSH).
Recommendations are based on a review of the literature using
Medline/Pubmed searches under the heading, CLL, up to
October 2003 and data presented at the American Society of
Hematology in 2003 and at the 10th International Workshop
on CLL in 2003. The results of meta-analyses and phase 3
studies that have been published or presented in abstract form
are included. Treatment recommendations were influenced by

In recent years, significant advances have been made in the understanding of malignant
diseases; leading to significant improvements in the survival rate. Among the various neoplastic
conditions the improvements in the morbidity and mortality figures in acute leukaemia show
perhaps the best results. While the diagnosis of acute leukaemia carried with it grave prognostic
implications as recently as ten years ago, it is possible today to speak of a "cure” with chemo-
