1 A climax to the Leukaemia Busters’ Save Our Clinical Trials Campaign came on 2 nd February when a 21,000 signature petition was presented to the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street. The campaign was launched as a response to a new European Clinical Trials Directive that will make it very difficult and prohibitively expensive for non- commercial organisations, including medical research charities, to conduct clinical trials. Leukaemia Busters have been campaigning hard since September 2003 to have the new regulations modified to take into account the special needs and unique contribution that The Children’s Leukaemia Research Charity Newsletter No.20, Spring/Summer 2004 www.leukaemiabusters.org.uk Phone: 023 8063 6607 Fax: 023 8063 6609 Email: info@leukaemiabusters.org.uk Donations and correspondence should be sent to: Leukaemia ...

Proceedings of the TTT2005 Academic Conference - 14 - The Effect of Arsenic Trioxide (ATO) on Human Leukaemia Cells Annie Hung-Hsin Liu Institute of Cellular and Organismic Biology, Academia Sinica, Taiwan; Genomics Research Centre, School of Health Sciences and School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Sciences, Griffith Uiversity, Australia ABSTRACT Studies into the effects of toxins on cancer cells provide clues on how to induce apoptosis of malignant cells. Arsenic Trioxide (ATO) may be effective in inducing apoptosis in rapidly dividing cells. Arsenic compounds have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Commonly known as a poison, it is also used to treat a variety of ailments from syphilis to cancer. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved ATO for treatment against acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) in 2000 (Food and Drug Administration ...

Viruses, Koalas and Leukaemia Dr Jeff McKee – University of Queensland National Wildlife Rehabilitation Conference 2005 Page 1 of 7 VIRUSES, KOALAS AND LEUKAEMIA Dr Jeff McKee University of Queensland Are viruses alive? The jury is still out – however regardless of their taxonomic status no other entity has had more effect on the evolution and ecology of life on the planet. Every species - plant, animal or bacteria - examined so far has its own associated viruses which have diverse impacts both on individual hosts and host populations. The devastation of New World indigenous peoples by smallpox between 1600 and 1900 and the more recent emergence of HIV-AIDS are two graphic reminders of how viruses shape populations. Viruses were first discovered by two Danish investigators in 1908. Ellerman was a physician and Bang a veterinarian and together they were attempting to track ...

Biochem. J. (1985) 227, 971-979 971 Printed in Great Britain Breakdown of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate in a T-celi leukaemia line stimulated by phytohaemagglutinin is not dependent on Ca2- mobilization Terukatsu SASAKI and Hiroko HASEGAWA-SASAKI Department of Biochemistry, Sapporo Medical College, Sapporo 060, Japan (Received 31 December 1984; accepted 10 January 1985) Addition of phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) to the [32P]Pi-prelabelled JURKAT cells, a human T-cell leukaemia line, resulted in a decrease of [32P]phosphatidylinositol 4,5- bisphosphate [PtdIns(4,5)P2] to about 35% ...
