Clinical trials supported by Leukaemia Research Fund
Phase I/II
A Phase I/II feasibility study of peptide vaccination in chronic myeloid
leukaemia ; Acronym: EPIC (Dr R Clark)
The leukaemia cells in patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia have a
protein marker on their surface that is made of parts of the BCR-ABL
onco-protein. These markers can be recognised by the immune system,
which in turn can mount a reaction and destroy these malignant cells.
Unfortunately, the immune reaction can be very weak and sometimes
does not occur at all. The aim of this study is to use BCR-ABL peptides,
produced in the laboratory and vaccinate patients with them in order to
enhance the immune response and hopefully destroy the leukaemia cells.

yeloma is a life-threatening cancer of the blood, similar to
leukaemia or lymphoma. It is caused when one type of blood
cell, called a plasma cell, grows in uncontrolled numbers. Plasma
cells, which grow in the bone marrow at the centre of many of our
bones, play a vital role in our immune system, producing proteins
which attack foreign bodies such as bacteria and other organisms.
Unlike leukaemia where the tumour cells spill out into the
blood, malignant myeloma cells accumulate in the bones. This build-
up is most commonly found in bones closest to sites of the most
active blood-forming bone marrow, such as the pelvis, spine and
skull.
The skeleton is not a static structure. Bone is continuously
being formed and broken down again throughout life. Unfortunately,
myeloma cells upset this fine balance which can lead to painful and
debilitating bone damage which is such a distressing feature ...

Acute leukaemia presenting as oral ulceration to a dental
emergency service
AK Dean,* JW Ferguson,† ES Marvan‡
Abstract
Leukaemia is a neoplastic disease characterized by
an excessive proliferation of immature white blood
cells and their precursors. Oral lesions may be the
presenting feature of acute leukaemias, which can be
rapidly fatal if left untreated. This report describes
the case of a 22-year-old female who presented to a
dental emergency department with oral
manifestations of acute leukaemia . It outlines the
role of oral lesions in the diagnosis of acute
leukaemias and emphasizes the importance of
immediate referral by general dental practitioners.
Key words: Acute leukaemia , oral ulceration, oral
manifestations.

Abstract.
Pyomyositis is an acute bacterial infection of skeletal muscle, most commonly seen in tropical
countries. Staphylococcus aureus is the principal cause of pyomyositis. Although pyomyositis is a rare
disorder in other areas, there is an increasing frequency to-date due to the increase in immunocompromised
patients. The combination of myalgia, fever and muscle tenderness provides early evidence for the
diagnosis of pyomyositis in neutropenic patients after chemotherapy. ...
