Anti-CD33 engineered lymphocytes for the treatment of myeloid leukaemia .
Dr. Peter J. Nicholls
Department of Biosciences
University of Kent at Canterbury
Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML)
Characterised by proliferation of myeloid cells in the bone marrow.
In the USA, annual incidence of the disease is 2.4 per 100,000 people, increasing to 12.6 per 100,000 at >65 years of age.
Prior to 1970, 5 year survival rates <15%
Recent refinements in diagnosis/therapy have improved outlook for AML patients.
Nevertheless, survival rate for patients <65 years old is just 40%.
Source: NEJM 341 (14), 1051 [1999]
Clinical Presentation in AML
Clinical signs (e.g. fatigue, haemorrage, infection, dyspnea) are initially diverse and non-specific, making diagnosis problematic.

The Identification of Over-Expressed Genes in Acute Myeloid Leukaemia
Farizan Aris, Mohamed Saifulaman Mohamed-Said Institute of Biotechnology, Suite 1-5, Level 5, Block 5, Science and Technology Building, Universiti Teknologi MARA, 40450, Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia
This study was directed towards the identification of altered gene expression characteristic of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) in Malaysian patients. RNA was isolated from 10 bone marrow of adult patients at the time of diagnosis and 3 controls were subjected to oligonucleotide microarray analysis. From the genes quantified, paired t-test analysis revealed numerous genes over-expressed in a statistically significant fashion including the over-expression of known oncogenes such as member of ras family and PTTG1. Significance was denoted by a p-value of less than 0.01 and ...

High Voltage Lines Linked to Leukaemia
Around 100,000 homes in the UK could have potentially dangerous levels of electromagnetic radiation - such as emitted from pylons - according to latest research. The National Radiation Protection Board said one case of childhood leukaemia every two years might be associated with living near power lines. But the National Radiological Protection Board, the Government's radiation watchdog, also said 80 per cent of homes with strong electromagnetic fields are not close to pylons.
They had been working to establish whether there is a link between cancer and high-voltage overhead power lines. Their findings acknowledge an increased danger of life-threatening disease which could be blamed on living near power lines - but said they could not be sure. They estimate 100,000 homes had levels of electromagnetic fields which might contribute to two cases of childhood leukaemia each ...

Abstract.
Granulocytic sarcomas (chloromas) are tumor masses of immature myeloid cells occurring
in an extramedullary site. Organ involvement by granulocytic sarcomas has been documented to be
extremely variable. We describe an unusual case of acute myeloid leukaemia in a 58-year-old male presenting
with a painless mass in the left neck and leukocytosis. ...

Abstract
A hospital-based behavioural intervention programme was developed for families of children with newly diagnosed or relapsed Acute

Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is cytotoxic to many types of human cancer cells. Most
chemotherapeutic agents are cytotoxic by inducing apoptosis. We examined the apoptotic
activity of GLA on purified B-cells isolated from patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic
leukaemia (B-CLL) and from normal individuals. GLA significantly increased the degree of
apoptosis in B-CLL B-cells after 24 hours of culture. The mean percentage of cells
undergoing apoptosis when cultured in medium alone (spontaneous apoptosis) was 20%
(range: 7 to 31%) (n=25) and in the presence of GLA (5 microg-60 microg) was: ...
