Cats that become persistently (permanently) infected with this virus are at risk of developing many severe illnesses such as anaemia and cancer. Between 80 and 90% of infected cats die within three and a half years of being diagnosed as having FeLV. The most common effect of infection is immunosuppression. The virus infects cells of the immune system (the white blood cells) killing or damaging them. ...

www.ijmm.org HIV-1 INFECTION IN A PATIENT OF ACUTE LYMPHOCYTIC LEUKAEMIA MISSED BY HIV-SPOT AND HIV-SCAN RAPID TESTS *S Singh, V Kumari, N Singh Abstract A case of HIV-1 infection, presumably acquired through unsafe blood transfusion in an acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) patient, is reported here in whom the two rapid HIV antibody detection kits (HIV-spot and HIV-Scan) failed to diagnose the infection while the sample was strongly positive in microwell ELISA (detect- HIV) on the same day and was confirmed by western blot assay (NEW LAV BLOT-1). However, repeat sample after 15 days was found positive in all the tests. Though the rapid tests are preferred over microwell ELISA because of ease of performance and rapid availability of results, this report confirms low sensitivity of the two rapid tests. This suboptimal sensitivity, particularly in cases of early seroconversion, therefore, must ...

PDF [33,5 KB]  From [www.animalrescueandcare.org.uk]  Last viewed: 13.07.2004
FELINE LEUKAEMIA VIRUS (FeLV) INFORMATION What is feline leukaemia virus? We might think the human race has had a hard time with all the infectious diseases which can attack us but thank goodness we’re not cats. Not only do they have their equivalent of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) but they can also be infected by an even nastier immunosuppressive virus-Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV). FeLV was first isolated over thirty years ago form a cluster of cats which were suffering from cancers of the white blood cells, hence the name. As time progressed, it became apparent that a more common consequence of infection is a gradual suppression of the immune system. Most cats are dead within two or three years of contracting the infection. The virus belongs to a fascinating group of micro-organisms known as retroviruses. These have the ability ...
