The challenge
Acute leukaemia is the major subtype
of paediatric cancer in developed
societies. Each year in the UK, there
are some 500 diagnoses of this disease
which translates to an accumulative
risk of around 1 in 2000 (between
the ages of 0 and 15 years).
Treatment of leukaemia in children,
with combination chemotherapy in
the context of controlled clinical
trials, has been an extraordinary
success story. Overall, cure rates are
now around 80% but with variation
between different cellular and
molecular subtypes of the disease.
Despite this progress, much remains
to be achieved.
Some subtypes of leukaemia
remain refractory to effective
eradication ...

lymphocytic
leukaemia (CLL) is
the most common
form of leukaemia in
Western countries.
Indeed, in the United
Kingdom alone,
there are about
2,700 new cases of CLL a year, and most occurrences are
in adults, particularly those over the age of 60. CLL is a
heterogeneous disease, having variable symptoms and a
widely varying clinical course – thus making it difficult for
clinicians to determine how it will evolve (ie its prognosis)
and how best to treat. For instance, it is not unknown for
some patients to be diagnosed, ...

Leukaemia
Leukaemia is a cancer of blood-forming cells. Blood cells
are made in bone marrow, the spongy part in the centre
of the bone. Blood is mostly made up of plasma. Floating
in the plasma are:
•
Red blood cells – that carry oxygen around
the body
•
White blood cells – that fight disease and
infection
•
Platelets – that help to stop bleeding when it
starts.
In people with leukaemia , the bone marrow produces
large numbers of abnormal white blood cells. The
abnormal white blood cells crowd into the bone marrow
so the marrow can't make enough normal red blood cells,
white blood cells and platelets. Over 630 Victorians
develop leukaemia every year.
Symptoms
The symptoms of leukaemia may include:
•
Weakness and tiredness
•
Regular infections and high temperatures
•
Bleeding that takes a ...

A RANDOMISED COMPARISON OF CHLORAMBUCIL, FLUDARABINE
AND FLUDARABINE PLUS CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE.
This new study will compare conventional therapy with chlorambucil versus the new agent
fludarabine, used alone or in a novel combination with cyclophosphamide. End points of the trial
will be: survival, response to therapy, duration of response, toxicity and quality of life.
This protocol describes the MRC Adult Working Party protocol for CLL4 and the procedures for
entering patients.
For patients that require further treatment after relapse or second line therapy for non-responders, a
second randomisation will compare treatment guided by the protocol versus guided by the in-vitro ...

Commenting on the paper Dr David Grant, Scientific Director, Leukaemia

and concern about living close to pylons and exposure to power-frequency

M
yeloma is a life-threatening cancer of the blood, similar to
leukaemia or lymphoma. It is caused when one type of blood
cell, called a plasma cell, grows in uncontrolled numbers. Plasma
cells, which grow in the bone marrow at the centre of many of our
bones, play a vital role in our immune system, producing proteins
which attack foreign bodies such as bacteria and other organisms.
Unlike leukaemia where the tumour cells spill out into the
blood, malignant myeloma cells accumulate in the bones. This build-
up is most commonly found in bones closest to sites of the most
active blood-forming bone marrow, such as the pelvis, spine and
skull.
The skeleton is not a static structure. Bone is continuously
being formed and broken down again throughout life. Unfortunately,
myeloma cells upset this fine balance which can lead to painful and
debilitating bone damage which is such a distressing feature ...

We are investigating the function of fusion genes that are commonly associated

focussed on his plastic Smartcard than the real life cases of his Centrelink
customers, by admitting that he ‘hasn’t yet been briefed’ on the shameful
treatment of leukaemia sufferer, Matthew Pearce.
Out-of-touch Hockey refused an interview on ABC Radio because of a lack of
a briefing and instead sent in the general manager of Centrelink to defend the
indefensible.
Minister Hockey claims he hasn’t been briefed despite:

Abstract. The membrane phospholipid organisation in the red cells of humans suffering
from chronic myeloid leukaemia has been analysed using the amino-group labelling reagent
trinitrobenzenesulphonic acid and the fluid-sensing fluorophore, Merocyanine 540. Unlike
the normal human erythrocytes, trinitrobenzenesulphonic acid in intact chronic myeloid

CHRONIC MYELOID LEUKAEMIA
FIFTH NATIONAL SEMINAR FOR PATIENTS AND CARERS
Saturday 7th October 2006, Manchester Conference Centre
Thank you for your enquiry about the fifth National Seminar for Patients with
Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia and their carers. This is an annual event which is held
at a different location every year, in the hope that as many people as possible
affected by Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia will be able to come to a meeting. Every
year there is more information available so please do feel free to attend even if you
have already been to previous meetings.
The meeting is intended to be fairly informal, but not everybody feels comfortable
asking a national authority on CML a question in the middle of a big meeting!
Because of this the meeting is divided into two parts. In the morning there will a
series of talks in a large lecture theatre. After lunch, we will have breakout
sessions, which ...

Introduction
Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) is the most
common form of adult leukaemia in the western
world, and is characterised by the clonal proliferation
and accumulation of CD5
+
B cells in the blood,
marrow, lymph nodes and spleen.
1
An estimated
10,020 adults will be diagnosed with, and 4,660 will
die of, CLL in the US in 2006.
2
Along with its high
incidence, the chronic nature of the disease and its
relatively longer survival make it one of the most
prevalent of all ...
