1 Why Eradicating Hepatitis B and Liver Cancer should be a National Priority in China ? - Professor Samuel So Asian Liver Center at Stanford University (Presented at the China National Conference on Hepatitis Prevention and Control, Hangzhou, China, April 26-29, 2004) If you judge by the focus of international and media reports, you would think that HIV/AIDS, SARS, and the avian flu, are the major health problems facing China today. An estimated 17,000 people died of HIV in 1999, and by 2003, approximately a million people in China is living with HIV. In response to this rising threat, a national plan for AIDS prevention and control (1998-2010) has been developed and adopted. During the SARS outbreak in 2003, 5327 people in China were infected and 349 died of SARS. To date, there has been no report of death from avian flu in China. 1/3 Press Information Screening for Liver Cancer in Patients with Chronic Viral Infection Effectively Improves Chance of Treatment and Survival Background It is estimated that 300 to 400 million people have chronic hepatitis B infection. Of these, 75% carriers are Asians. Importantly, 25 to 40% will develop cirrhosis or liver cancer . In Hong Kong, there were 1,576 new cases of liver cancer with 1,381 deaths in 2002 according to the Hong Kong Cancer Registry. Liver cancer ranks the second and ninth most common cancer in male and female respectively. The prognosis of liver cancer is dismal because most of the patients with liver cancer do not have symptoms. By the time of occurrence of symptoms, it is usually at the late stage of the disease. It is therefore important to diagnose liver cancer at early stage in order to improve chance of receiving treatment and survival. ...

26 Dartmouth Medicine ternal beam radiation. The Y-90 decays over 2.7 days into non-ra- dioactive zirconium, and the tiny bits of by-then inert glass stay in the liver , causing no problems. Patients who have had Therasphere have suffered mini- mal side effects, and their tumors have decreased substantially in size. Zaki says it is a very good al- ternative to the traditional treat- ment, transarterial chemoem- bolization (TACE). TACE com- bines anti- cancer drug therapy to shrink the tumor with emboliz- ing, or blocking, the hepatic artery that feeds the tumor. However, TACE requires a hos- pital stay of two to five days and can cause more damage to sur- rounding tissue than Thera- sphere. In addition, most pa- tients suffer post-embolization syndrome—a reaction to blood being cut off to a solid organ—as well as nausea, abdominal pain, ...

The procedure demands the use of technologically advanced imaging equipment. A case study. By Andrew S. Kennedy, M.D., FACRO, Wake Radiology Oncology, Cary, NC Most patients with colorectal, breast, lung, hepatocellular, and pancreatic cancers are at risk to recur from metastatic disease in the liver after potentially curative treatment. When the liver does harbor metastatic or primary cancer , treatment options and ultimately their chances of survival rapidly decline.
