Concepts in Local Therapy For Liver Cancer
D. C. Mulligan, M.D., FACS, Chair, Division of Transplantation Surgery, Mayo Clinic Arizona,
13400 E. Shea Boulevard, Scottsdale, AZ 85259
Throughout the world, hepatic malignancies are rapidly becoming more abundant.
Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is responsible for more than 1 million deaths yearly and will
undoubtedly continue to rise due to the increasing prevalence of hepatitis C, which in the U.S. is
approximately 4 million. Metastatic disease to the liver represents an even larger population,
with over 150,000 new cases of colorectal cancer occurring in the U.S. per year and 20% of
which will develop liver metastases early in the disease. Despite the bleak picture painted by
these figures, a significant survival advantage may be offered to patients with primary and
secondary hepatic malignancies, particularly when the disease is localized to the ...

What is the liver ?
The liver is the largest solid organ
within your body. It lies under the
ribs, just below the lungs, under the
diaphragm, on the right side of your
body. It has two main lobes and is
further divided into segments.
Unlike other organs within the body,
the liver has two main blood vessels
that supply it with blood, oxygen
and nutrients. The portal vein brings
blood from the gut and accounts for
75% of the liver ’s blood supply. The
hepatic artery brings blood from the
heart and accounts for the
remaining 25%. Liver tumours
receive their blood supply from
branches of the hepatic artery.

Abstract
Cells termed myofibroblasts are prominent in the
injury response of all epithelial tissues. They exhibit
proliferation, migration, production of collagen and
other extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules, and con-
traction, all for containing the injury and closing the
wound. When the injury is limited in time, the final
stage of the repair involves a dismantling of the cel-
lular apparatus and restoration of normal tissue ...

New Treatment for Liver Cancer – Radiofrequency Ablation
Primary liver cancer is the No.2 cancer killer in Hong Kong. About 1500 new
patients are identified every year, and 1,381 people died of liver cancer in 2002.
Currently, 4 methods are available for the treatment for liver cancer : surgical
removal, liver transplantation, transarterial chemoembolization and radiofrequency
ablation.
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as a treatment for liver cancer has just been
developed in the recent 4 to 5 years. A needle is inserted into the tumor through the
skin, by laparoscope or by operation, and emits radiofrequency wave that causes
vibration of the ions in the cancerous cells, which in turn produces frictional heat.
Upon reaching 50 degree Celsius, protein in the cancerous cells solidifies and the
cancerous cells die.
RFA is suitable to treat patients with more than ...

Abstract
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have anti-proliferative effects and induce apoptosis in colon
and other cancers. In the present study, we report that mefenamic acid (MEF), a member of NSAIDs, has an
inhibitory effect on a proliferation of liver cancer cells. We used Chang and Huh-7 cells as human liver cancer
cells. MEF-treated Huh-7 and Chang cells displayed apoptotic morphological changes and the portion of cells in
sub G1 was ...

INTRODUCTION
Ginseng has been used as a medicinal plant for more than
2000 yr in Asian countries. In fact, various pharmacological
activities have been found in ginseng extract or its consti-
tuents. Among them, anti-carcinogenic effect seems to be
especially important, since development of effective method
for cancer prevention is urgent problem not only in Asian
countries but also in all over the world. Inhibitory effect of
red ginseng extracts on pulmonary carcinogenesis has already
been well documented (1). And tendency of suppression on
liver carcinogensis has also reported (1). Thus, at first, we
have extended the study on inhibitory effect of red ginseng
extracts in liver carcinogensis using other experimental mod-
els. Furthermore, anti-carcinogenic activity of white gin-
seng extracts, besides red ginseng extracts, was also investi-
gated.

it began. Thus, cancer that begins in the
colon or breast and spreads to the liver is
