Abstract. We have demonstrated anti-proliferation and anti-metastasis effects of both interferon- · and a histone deacetylase inhibitor, sodium butyrate, on human liver cancer cell lines. In this study, invasive ability of human liver cancer cell lines through the matrix-coated membrane was examined and inhibitory effect of interferon- · and sodium butyrate was investigated. Among six human liver cancer cell lines, HLE and HLF showed high invasive ability using the Matrigel invasion assay. This invasion ability was significantly inhibited by pretreatment of the cells with 1000 IU/ml of interferon- · or 2 mM of sodium butyrate. Gelatin zymography and the matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 activity assay showed that these two cell lines produce active- and pro-matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9, and their activity was significantly ...

The 1996-2000 average annual age-adjusted incidence rate for invasive cancers of the liver and intrahepatic bile duct was almost three times higher in males than in females (6.8 compared to 2.4 per 100,000), and blacks of both sexes had higher rates compared to whites. There were 708 cases of liver /intrahepatic bile duct cancers diagnosed and reported among residents of Pennsylvania for 2000 – the highest annual figure recorded between 1991 and 2000. The annual age-adjusted incidence rates by sex and race for ten years (1991 through 2000) showed increasing rates among males, especially black males, and females of both races. The 1996-2000 average annual age-specific incidence rates show that black males have had the highest risks. During the period of 1996-2000, over 62 percent of the cases were diagnosed among residents 65 years of age or older. In 2000, over 57 percent of the staged liver /intrahepatic bile duct cancers were ...

Results from a study presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology in June 2003 showed that RFA in addition to chemotherapy dramatically improves patient survival. At three years, approximately 40 percent to 60 percent of patients treated with RFA were alive, ...

504 JMAJ, November 2003—Vol. 46, No. 11 Need to Control Hepatitis, a Very Common Disease in Japan Following the discovery of hepatitis B virus in 1964, hepatitis viruses A and C were identi- fied in 1972 and 1989, respectively. The roles of these viruses in Japan have been increasingly well clarified. That is, the pathophysiology of the three types of viral hepatitis has been eluci- dated, and appropriate treatment measures have been established. In the past, it was a clinical practice at out- patient liver clinics in Japan to inform patients of changes in their serum GOT and GPT levels. Prediction, Prevention and Treatment of Liver Cancer JMAJ 46(11): 504–511, 2003 Masao OMATA Professor, Department of Gastroenterology, Graduate School of Medicine, University of Tokyo Abstract: Hepatitis virus infection has ...

Fox Chase Cancer Center 2003 Scientific Report 1 Clearance of Infected Hepatocytes During the Resolution of a Transient Hepadnavirus Infection. Mason, Aldrich, Saputelli, in collaboration with Summers, a Jilbert b Hepadnavirus infections in adults normally clear after a few months. Prior to clearance, every hepatocyte may be infected. Infection of every hepatocyte may also characterize chronic infections but, in this case, the immune response causes a persistent disease without clearing the virus. A goal of our research is therefore to characterize how virus is elimi- nated during resolution of transient infections and, in the long term, whether this same pro- cess can be induced, to cure chronic infections. To study the fate of infected hepatocytes during a transient infection, we infected woodchucks with woodchuck hepatitis ...

LIVER CANCER - All Sections LIVER CANCER What Is Cancer ? Cancer develops when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Although there are many kinds of cancer , they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells. Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a person's life, normal cells divide more rapidly until the person becomes an adult. After that, cells in most parts of the body divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells and to repair injuries. Because cancer cells continue to grow and divide, they are different from normal cells. Instead of dying, they outlive normal cells and continue to form new abnormal cells. Cancer cells can travel to other parts of the body where they begin to grow and replace normal tissue. This process, called metastasis , occurs as the cancer cells ...

N N E E W W S S 4 February 2004 Revolutionary liver cancer treatment to be showcased at Medway The Medway NHS Trust is hosting a ground breaking clinical workshop on 17 February 2004 at the Medway Maritime Hospital, Gillingham which will include two live demonstrations of an exciting new procedure for the diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer . The internationally respected specialist, Professor R Lencioni of Pisa Hospital, Italy, will perform this procedure, which is based on Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) and Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA). The thrust of this new advance is local deposition of thermal energy directly to the tumour cells, which heats and destroys the cancerous tissue. Electrodes shaped like needles are inserted into the liver . This is achieved without making cuts and Ultrasound images allow the ...

Liver Cancer Jonathan M Hemli Thomas J Hugh Royal North Shore Hospital General Surgical Training Program (NSW), 3rd March 2004 Overview A large number of malignant lesions have been described in the liver , both of primary hepatic origin, and metastatic in nature (Table 1). The most common primary hepatic malignancy is hepatocellular carcinoma, accounting for over 85% of primary cancers of the liver , while intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is the next most common disease, constituting up to 10% of reported cases. Metastatic disease to the liver is considerably more common than primary hepatic malignancy. Hepatocellular Carcinoma Table 1. Intraarterial Irradiation for Inoperable Liver Cancer Information for patient Introduction • Intra-arterial irradiation has been developed in the treatment of inoperable liver tumours. This is to eradicate tumour cells by radiation. • Radiologist with special training in Interventional Radiology will perform this treatment in the Department of Radiology under image guidance. • The procedure involves the selective cannulation of the specific artery supplying the liver tumours and the subsequent delivery of radioactive particles (Yttrium-90). • Yttrium 90 particles emit high-energy electron, which kills the tumour cells in the vicinity. • About 5% of the patients receiving this treatment have their inoperable status converted to resectable cases. Procedure • Pretreatment assessment imaging such as computed tomography (CT) and angiography will be ...

PDF [179,6 KB]  From [www.cancer.org]  Last viewed: 30.07.2004
This chapter is comprised of three sections. The first section reviews how factors that alter liver metabolism can cause toxicity from anti- cancer drugs. Because of the high incidence of liver toxicity and the high case-fatality rate, the second section will be an in-depth examination of liver toxicity in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The final sec- tion will review hepatotoxicity from individual anticancer drugs. ALTERATIONS IN HEPATIC METABOLISM OF DRUGS Chemotherapeutic agents usually have a narrow therapeutic index. Thus, factors that change disposition of these drugs may easily alter efficacy or cause toxicity. Specific recommendations about dose reduc- tion in patients with impairment or alteration of hepatic metabolism will be discussed in other chapters. This section will discuss the impact of various factors on disposition of anticancer drugs by the liver (Table 151.1) ...
