RISK FACTOR INFORMATION FOR SELECTED CANCER TYPES Source: Community Assessment Unit, Bureau of Environmental Health Assessment, Massachusetts Department of Public Health December, 2002 Liver Cancer An estimated 16,600 people in the U.S. (11,000 men and 5,600 women) will be diagnosed with liver cancer in 2002, accounting for approximately 1% of all new cancers (ACS, 2002). Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary cancer of the liver , accounting for about 75% of all cases. Rarer forms of malignant liver cancer include cholangiocarcinomas, angiosarcomas, and hepatoblastomas in children. Although HCC is approximately ten times more common in developing countries in East and Southeast Asia and Africa, incidence is rapidly increasing in the United States (ACS, 2001). Rates of HCC in the U.S. have increased by 70% over the past two decades (Yu et al., ...

Eighty to ninety percent of patients presenting with primary or secondary liver cancer have inoperable disease and a poor prognosis [1-4]. The median survival for patients with non-resectable hepatocellular carcinoma is three to six months [5,6], and six to 12 months for patients with non-resectable hepatic colorectal metastases [7]. These patients must rely largely on various forms ...

PDF [14,8 KB]  From [starklab.slu.edu]  Last viewed: 13.07.2004
Q and A: Glutamine, Liver Cancer and Apoptosis Background As you should have learned in BL A302 and 304, amino acids serve several roles in cellular metabolism. They act as precursors in protein synthesis, nitrogen donors in some biosynthetic pathways (nucleotides, amino sugars, amino acids, urea) and carbon donors in other biosynthetic pathways (gluconeogenesis, nucleotides, lipids). Their carbon skeletons can be used as oxidizable substrates (TCA cycle (ATP synthesis)) and they can be utilized in the biosynthesis of polyamines and glutathione. This semester you will learn that they are important for hormone synthesis (thyroid hormones (T 4 and T 3 ), epinephrine) and neurotransmitter biosynthesis (GABA, acetylcholine, serotonin, catecholamines, dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine)), and can even act as neurotransmitters (glutamate, glycine). Amino acid metabolism ...

PDF [68,2 KB]  From [www.permanente.net]  Last viewed: 13.07.2004
Cancer of the Liver Liver cancer can be due to malignant changes in the liver cells themselves—called primary liver cancer —or it can be due to a cancer spreading from another site to the liver —called secondary liver cancer . This message focuses on primary liver cancer , and does not address secondary liver cancer . Cancer that has spread to the liver from another site retains the characteristics and behavior of the original tumor—whether it is breast, colon, pancreatic, stomach, or some other cancer . In North and South America and in Europe, primary liver cancers account for only one to two percent of malignant tumors. However, in parts of Africa and Asia, they are much more common, accounting for 20 to 30 percent of malignancies. Liver cancer is four times as common in men as in women. In Western countries, it occurs most commonly in people ...

This evidence is based upon studies conducted at Los Alamos National Laboratory, studies of nuclear workers at other sites, and others exposed to ionizing radiation. These findings are consistent with the National Research Council’s determination that the liver is sensitive to ionizing radiation. Liver cancer is designated as a “specified” cancer under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act. Historically, incidence of ...

The roles of these viruses in Japan have been increasingly well clarified. That is, the pathophysiology of the three types of viral hepatitis has been eluci- dated, and appropriate treatment measures have been established. In the past, it was a clinical practice at out- patient liver clinics in Japan to inform patients of changes in their serum GOT and GPT levels. Link KH, Kornmann M, Formentini A, Leder G, Sunelaitis E, Schatz M, Pressmar J, Beger HG. Department of General Surgery, University Hospital of Ulm, Steinhoevelstr. 9, 89075 Ulm, Germany. BACKGROUND: Cure is possible by resecting colorectal isolated liver metastases. In non-resectable isolated colorectal liver metastases (CRLM), regional chemotherapy has been advocated to optimize the disease control in the liver in order to improve the results of the alternative, systemic chemotherapy. The drugs are delivered by means of hepatic artery infusion (HAI) via ports or pumps; pharmacological modifications of the hepatic arterial blood-flow-like HAI with starch microspheres or stop-flow and perfusion techniques were applied to improve HAI. METHODS: We reviewed the ...

liver  cancer  Prevention of Liver Cancer   THOMAS W. KENSLER   Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, MD 21205    Hepatocarcinogenesis (HCC) is the fifth leading cause of cancer mortality in the world, and in parts of Asia and Africa it accounts for nearly 70% of cancer deaths . The 5-year mortality rate for individuals diagnosed with HCC is greater than 95%. In the People's Republic of China, HCC accounts for at least 250,000 deaths per year, particularly among men, with an incidence rate in some counties approaching 100 cases per 100,000 per year. Moreover, in high-risk regions of the world the median age of onset of HCC is decades earlier than in the U.S.  The geographic distribution of HCC cases indicates some risk factors that could cause a predisposition to this disease.  In particular, areas where viral hepatitis infection is endemic also show high incidence ...

The 1996-2000 average annual age-adjusted incidence rate for invasive cancers of the liver and intrahepatic bile duct was almost three times higher in males than in females (6.8 compared to 2.4 per 100,000), and blacks of both sexes had higher rates compared to whites. There were 708 cases of liver /intrahepatic bile duct cancers diagnosed and reported among residents of Pennsylvania for 2000 – the highest annual figure recorded between 1991 and 2000. The annual age-adjusted incidence rates by sex and race for ten years (1991 through 2000) showed increasing rates among males, especially black males, and females of both races. The 1996-2000 average annual age-specific incidence rates show that black males have had the highest risks. During the period of 1996-2000, over 62 percent of the cases were diagnosed among residents 65 years of age or older. In 2000, over 57 percent of the staged liver /intrahepatic bile duct cancers were ...
