Advance Access publication 19 January 2005 doi:10.1093/ije/dyi004 Commentary: Liver cancer and the epidemiological and cancer transition theories Omer Gersten The article by Shibuya and Yano 1 in this issue investigates the most common form of liver cancer in Japan, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Using log-linear Poisson regression models and addressing the problem of non-identifiability, the authors attempt to tease out the influence of age, period, and cohort effects on HCC mortality. An important conclusion of the article is that HCC death rates are highest in cohorts born around 1930. Another conclusion at the opposite end of the spectrum also deserves to be stressed. ...

LIVER CANCER Cancer Contr ol Cancer Control Bulletin Issue 30 • January/February 2003 Information for GPs LIVER CANCER SOUTH EAST HEALTH Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and colorectal liver metastases are the most common types of tumours in the liver treated in South Eastern Sydney. Hepatocellular carcinoma In Australia, HCC is a relatively rare cancer , accounting for 1.4% of cancer deaths. Males are 3 times more likely to be diagnosed with primary liver cancer as females and 3.6 times as likely to die from the disease. The incidence of HCC has trebled in the last 20 years, mainly due to the spread of hepatitis B and C virus (HBV and HCV). Five-year survival has improved only marginally in that time and is currently 8% for males and 11% for females. HCC is endemic in developing countries, where three-quarters of the world’s cases ...

This evidence is based upon studies conducted at Los Alamos National Laboratory, studies of nuclear workers at other sites, and others exposed to ionizing radiation. These findings are consistent with the National Research Council’s determination that the liver is sensitive to ionizing radiation. Liver cancer is designated as a “specified” cancer under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act. Historically, incidence of liver cancer has ...

Tel 800.880.1300 Volume 98 5 Number 10 51 Are deaths from liver cancer , kidney cancer , and leukemia clustered in San Antonio? F. BENJAMIN ZHAN, PHD INTRODUCTION Concerns have arisen that cancer mor- tality rates in San Antonio may be ele- vated (1,2). For example, Bradshaw (2) reported high mortality rates of liver cancer , lung cancer , kidney can- cer, and leukemia per square mile in some areas of San Antonio. However, without consideration of the underly- ing at-risk population and its associ- ated demographic characteristics, mortality rates per square mile alone may give a misleading picture of cancer mortality rates in San Antonio. In addi- tion, to avoid preselection bias, cancer mortality in the entire state of Texas should be analyzed first to determine whether cancer mortality rates are in- deed excessively higher ...

This technology utilises a naturally occurring receptor present on liver cells that specifically binds hemoglobin as a means of selectively targeting drugs to the liver . This receptor normally functions to recognise and transport cell-free hemoglobin into the liver once bound to its natural plasma carrier, haptoglobin. The attachment of therapeutic drugs or diagnostic agents to hemoglobin enables selective delivery and uptake across the liver cell membrane as an improved method of targeted drug delivery. The versatility of ...

pg . 21 AD V ANCES in orthomolecular r esear ch Hepatocellular carcinoma ( HCC , also known as primary liver cancer or hepatoma ) is the most common primary, malignant liver tumor, and the fifth most common cancer in the world, with about 430 000 people suffering from it worldwide in 1990. It's as deadly as it is common: almost everyone who develops HCC will die within a year. The single largest risk factor for HCC is viral hepatitis. In fact, if you have chronic hepatitis B infection, your risk of HCC climbs two hundred fold over the rest of the population. (Other risk factors include Hep C , aflatoxin (a toxin produced by some molds in food), some drugs and industrial chemicals (such as vinyl chloride), alcohol abuse , non-viral hepatitis , and the iron-metabolism disorder hemochromatosis ). With the prognosis for HCC so ...
