Primary liver cancer (PLC) is one of the most
common cancers in China. According to the
statistics of our country, primary liver cancer claims
20-40 lives per100 000 people annually, with 19.98
per100 000 in cities and 23.59 per 100 000 in rural
areas, ranking as the second and the first leading
cause of cancer death respectively. Of all the newly
enrolled cases in the world each year, 45% are
found in the mainland of China. In the southeast
areas of high incidence, the situation is even worse
that the tumor tends to occur in a younger age
group.
In China, the research in the diagnosis and
treatment of primary liver cancer has undergone

Abstract. Des-

-carboxyprothrombin (DCP), also known as
a protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist II, is an
abnormal prothrombin. The level of serum DCP is used in
clinical diagnosis and prognosis of patients with hepato-
cellular carcinoma (HCC). Our previous immunohistochemical
study showed that DCP is expressed not only in cancer tissues
but also in the surrounding non- cancer tissues of HCC patients.
However, clinical significance of DCP expression in non-
cancer tissues of HCC patients remains unclear. In this study,
we examined the relationship between histochemical
expression of DCP in cancer and/or non- cancer tissues and
the clinical outcome of the HCC patients. A retrospective study
was performed of 132 patients each with a single primary
HCC nodule. Expression of DCP in tissues was evaluated
with immunohistochemical staining using anti-DCP antibody

Background information regarding
Austin Health’s new liver cancer treatment
What is the treatment for?
Certain advanced and inoperable liver cancers.
How does it work?
The treatment involves using microscopic radiation beads called SIR-Spheres
®
that are
injected directly into the liver cancers to destroy tumours within the liver that are
otherwise inaccessible and inoperable, while minimising harmful side effects to
surrounding healthy tissue.
For information on the treatment visit www.sirtex.com
Can any one with liver cancer have this treatment?
Not everyone is suitable for this treatment and must undergo tests in hospital to
determine their suitability.
How do I find out if I am suitable for this treatment?
Visit www.sirtex.com and printout the information to take to your oncologist ( cancer
doctor) to discuss your options.

From [www.dsf.health.state.pa.us] Last viewed: 07.09.2006
The 1997-2001 average annual age-adjusted incidence rate for invasive cancers of the liver and intrahepatic bile duct was almost
three times higher in males than in females (7.1 compared to 2.4 per 100,000), and blacks of both sexes had rates that were more
than twice as high as the comparable rates for whites.
There were 632 cases of liver /intrahepatic bile duct cancers diagnosed and reported among residents of Pennsylvania for 2001.
This was the second highest annual figure recorded between 1992 and 2001. The annual age-adjusted incidence rates by sex and
race for ten years (1992 through 2001) showed increasing rates among males, especially black males, and females of both races.
The 1997-2001 average annual age-specific incidence rates show that black males have usually had the highest risks. During the
period of 1997-2001, nearly 61 percent of the cases were diagnosed among residents 65 years of age or older. In 2001, over 46

From [jkms.kams.or.kr] Last viewed: 07.09.2006
INTRODUCTION
The use of alternative therapy in cancer patients has become
increasingly popular, although this approach has not been
scientifically tested and has the potential to interact with con-
ventional treatment (1-6). To date, there have been no studies
prospectively investigating the use of alternative therapies in
breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy, or
determining the risk of abnormal liver function in concomi-
tantly treated patients. Also, there are few published reports
focusing on hepatotoxicity from chemotherapy with adriamy -
cin or the CMF (cytoxan+methotrexate+5-fluorouracil) regi-
men in adjuvant chemotherapy trial (7, 8). We previously
found that 34% of patients who had received adjuvant adri-
amycin followed by CMF chemotherapy for breast cancer
developed abnormal liver functions (9). Since many of our
patients were also taking various kinds of ...

INTRODUCTION
Ginseng has been used as a medicinal plant for more than
2000 yr in Asian countries. In fact, various pharmacological
activities have been found in ginseng extract or its consti-
tuents. Among them, anti-carcinogenic effect seems to be
especially important, since development of effective method
for cancer prevention is urgent problem not only in Asian
countries but also in all over the world. Inhibitory effect of
red ginseng extracts on pulmonary carcinogenesis has already
been well documented (1). And tendency of suppression on
liver carcinogensis has also reported (1). Thus, at first, we
have extended the study on inhibitory effect of red ginseng
extracts in liver carcinogensis using other experimental mod-
els. Furthermore, anti-carcinogenic activity of white gin-
seng extracts, besides red ginseng extracts, was also investi-
gated.

#73 - Study Of Dioxin-Exposed Humans Reveals Cancer , Birth Defects, Liver And Cardiovascular Damage
April 17, 1988
A new study of Vietnam veterans, conducted by Air Force
physicians, links dioxin exposure to increases in cancer , birth
defects, psychological damage, liver damage, cardiovascular
deterioration, and degeneration of the endocrine system. The new
work stops short of saying dioxin exposures CAUSED the
observable health damage among dioxin-exposed vets, but it
explicitly reverses the conclusions of a 1984 Air Force study which
said dioxin exposures had been shown to be harmless.
The study is continuing, and will begin using sensitive new blood
tests to determine past exposures to dioxin; future study may be
able to pin down, or rule out, direct causal effects. In the meantime,
advocates of mass burn incinerators and other dioxinproducing ...

cell lines through the matrix-coated membrane was examined

Abstract. To uncover mechanisms underlying progression of
colorectal carcinogenesis and to identify genes associated
with liver metastasis, we analyzed expression profiles of 14
primary colorectal cancers (CRCs) with liver metastases, and
compared them with profiles of 11 non-metastatic carcinomas
and those of 9 adenomas of the colon. A hierarchical cluster
analysis using data from a cDNA microarray containing
23,040 genes indicated that the cancers with metastasis had
different expression profiles from those without metastasis,
although a number of genes were commonly up-regulated in
primary cancers of both categories. We documented 54 genes
that were frequently up-regulated and 375 that were frequently
down-regulated in primary tumors with metastases to liver ,
but not in tumors without metastasis. Subsequent quantitative
PCR experiments confirmed that PRDX4, CKS2, MAGED2 ,

patients presenting with primary or secondary liver cancer
have inoperable disease and a poor prognosis [1-4]. The
median survival for patients with non-resectable
hepatocellular carcinoma is three to six months [5,6], and
six to 12 months for patients with non-resectable hepatic

Cancer of the Liver
Liver cancer can be due to malignant changes in the liver cells themselves—called primary liver
cancer—or it can be due to a cancer spreading from another site to the liver—called secondary
liver cancer. This message focuses on primary liver cancer, and does not address secondary liver
cancer. Cancer that has spread to the liver from another site retains the characteristics and
behavior of the original tumor—whether it is breast, colon, pancreatic, stomach, or some other
cancer.
In North and South America and in Europe, primary liver cancers account for only one to two
percent of malignant tumors. However, in parts of Africa and Asia, they are much more
common, accounting for 20 to 30 percent of malignancies. Liver cancer is four times as common
in men as in women. In Western countries, it occurs most commonly in people in their 40s and
50s, but in Africa and Asia it may occur one or two decades ...
