Liver cancer
Liver cancer can be a primary cancer (starts in the liver )
or a secondary cancer (starts in another part of the body
and spreads to the liver ). Primary liver cancer is one of
the less common cancers in Victoria. Secondary liver
cancers are the most common liver cancers. Liver cancer
usually has no symptoms in the early stages.
Functions of the liver
The liver is the largest organ inside the body. It is located
on the right hand side of the abdomen and is protected by
the ribcage. The liver will function normally with only a
small portion of it in working order. Its functions include:
•
Destroying harmful substances, such as
alcohol, and getting rid of waste products.
•
Converting food containing fats and sugars to
be used by the body for energy.
•
Producing bile to help the digestion of food.

ONE in 10 Filipinos has chronic Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis B infections can cause liver
cancer . Believe it or not, it's that common. Imagine, if you go to a restaurant, and there
are a hundred Filipinos there, chances are 10 of them have Hepatitis B and they don't
know it. One in four Hepa B sufferers will die from it.
Preventable
If you have chronic Hepatitis B, there's a 25-percent chance that, without treatment or
monitoring, you will die from it. Every year, about 4,000 Filipinos die from liver cancer .
But liver cancer is preventable since there is already a vaccine for Hepatitis B.

Cancer in Northern Ireland 1993 - 2001: A Comprehensive Report 37
7: Cancer of the Liver & Intrahepatic Bile Ducts (C22)
Incidence
In 2001, cancer of the liver was the seventeenth most common cancer in males and nineteenth
commonest in females. On average, 29 males and 26 females were diagnosed as having cancer
of the liver each year, accounting for about 1% of all cancers registered.
Age
The median age at diagnosis was 69 years for males and 74 years for females. Given the levels of
disease in 2001, the risk of getting liver cancer before the age of 75 years was 1 in 504 for males
and 1 in 623 for females (Table 7a). Cancer of the liver is predominantly a disease in the older
population with few cases diagnosed before the age of 60 years. The age-specific rates were
generally higher in males than females (Figure 7a).

ABSTRACT
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the most well recognised human carcinogens. Since its discovery about 40 years
ago, HBV has been studied extensively. This article summarises the evidence derived from various studies including
epidemiological, animal model, histopathology studies and molecular genetics studies leading to the establishment of
HBV as the main aetiological agent for hepatocellular carcinoma ...

Abstract
The use of biomarkers in molecular epidemiology studies for identifying stages in the progression of development of the health effects of
environmental agents has the potential for providing important information for critical regulatory, clinical and public health problems.
Investigations of aflatoxins probably represent one of the most extensive data sets in the field and this work may serve as a template for future
studies of other environmental agents. The aflatoxins are naturally occurring mycotoxins found on foods such as corn, peanuts, various ...

Hepatitis B shots reduce liver cancer
In July 1984, Taiwan instituted a free, nationwide vaccination campaign against the hepati-
tis B virus. The program started with infants, but by the end of the 1980s, preschool and
school-age children were also getting the shots. Predictably, hepatitis B cases in Taiwanese
children declined by more than 90 percent between 1984 and 1994.
Now, a review of Taiwan’s national cancer registry shows that the incidence of liver cancer
in Taiwanese children has dropped dramatically as well. Researchers had suspected the same
virus often underlies both diseases.
To gauge the cancer decline, Taiwanese researchers documented all 294 cases of hepatocel-
lular carcinoma, the most common liver cancer , between 1981 and 1994 in children age 6 to
14. The number of cases fell from 26 in 1982 to 8 in 1993, Mei-Hwei Chang’s team at the
National Taiwan University in Taipei reports in ...

What is the liver ?
The liver is the largest solid organ
within your body. It lies under the
ribs, just below the lungs, under the
diaphragm, on the right side of your
body. It has two main lobes and is
further divided into segments.
Unlike other organs within the body,
the liver has two main blood vessels
that supply it with blood, oxygen
and nutrients. The portal vein brings
blood from the gut and accounts for
75% of the liver ’s blood supply. The
hepatic artery brings blood from the
heart and accounts for the
remaining 25%. Liver tumours
receive their blood supply from
branches of the hepatic artery.

Hepatocellular carcinoma ( HCC , also known as primary
liver cancer or hepatoma ) is the most common primary,
malignant liver tumor, and the fifth most common cancer in
the world, with about 430 000 people suffering from it
worldwide in 1990. It's as deadly as it is common: almost
everyone who develops HCC will die within a year.
The single largest risk factor for HCC is viral hepatitis. In
fact, if you have chronic hepatitis B infection, your risk of
HCC climbs two hundred fold over the rest of the
population. (Other risk factors include Hep C , aflatoxin (a
toxin produced by some molds in food), some drugs and
industrial chemicals (such as vinyl chloride), alcohol

What are the causes of liver cancer? ?¤ LIVERCANCER
[42,4 KB]
From [www.jeffersonhospital.org] Last viewed: 07.09.2006
When cells in the liver become abnormal,
grow out of control and form a cancerous
tumor, the disease is called primary liver
cancer , also known as malignant hepatoma
or hepatocellular carcinoma. (“Hepato” means
“ liver .”) Primary liver cancer is not the same
disease as cancer that spreads (metastasizes)
to the liver from another part of the body
(secondary liver cancer ). The liver is often
the site of secondary tumors that result from
the spread of cancer from another organ,
such as the colon or breast. The cancer cells
in the secondary tumor are like those of the
original cancer , the primary cancer , which
is named for the part of the body in which
it began. Thus, cancer that begins in the
colon or breast and spreads to the liver is
called metastatic colon cancer or
metastatic breast cancer .
