A Perspective on Cytology of Lung Cancer
[Indian J Chest Dis Allied Sci 2004; 46 : 81-83]
The dawn of the last century was still early
days for carcinoma lung , when it was regarded
as an uncommon form of malignancy. A signi-
ficant rise in the incidence of lung cancer was
noticed at the end of World War I, the occur-
rence closely correlated with the degree of
atmospheric pollution and density of popula-
tion. Besides these, personal habits like cigarette
smoking and occupation also had an effect.
During the second half of the last century an
increase in size and ageing of the population
have contributed to the increase in absolute
numbers of lung cancer every year. It is

Lung and Bronchus Cancer In Ohio, 1996-2000
[163,4 KB]
From [www.odh.ohio.gov] Last viewed: 07.09.2006
Cancers of the lung and bronchus make up the greatest percentage of
incident (newly diagnosed) cancers reported to the Ohio Cancer Incidence
Surveillance System (OCISS), comprising 16.3 percent of incident cancers in
Ohio in 1996-2000 (Table 1). From 1996 to 2000, the average annual age-
adjusted lung and bronchus cancer incidence rate was 75.5 cases per
100,000 residents, which is about 21 percent higher than the average
annual age-adjusted U.S. (SEER
1
) incidence rate of 62.6 cases per 100,000
residents. Reporting of invasive lung and bronchus cancer in Ohio is
estimated to be complete (100 percent) in 1996-2000, giving stability to the
data presented in this report. Similar to incidence, the 1996-2000 Ohio age-
adjusted mortality rate for lung and bronchus cancer of 63.4 deaths per
100,000 residents is higher (12 percent) than the 1996-2000 U.S. (NCHS

that attention should be focused on finding the homes with the
highest levels. Recently, researchers estimated that reducing radon
levels in all homes with readings higher than 4 pCi/L would result in
2% to 4% fewer lung cancer deaths.
To determine whether radon levels are high in your area, call
your local EPA office. Taking a radon measurement in an individ-

several inexpensive kits are available in most hardware stores.
Etched-track or electret detectors are good choices; the best of
these kits take measurements over at least a three-month period.

Lung cancer is the second most frequently
diagnosed cancer in Michigan, behind only
prostate cancer .
3
Michigan ranks 21
st
in the nation in lung
cancer mortality.
4
Based on randomized controlled trials,
screening for lung cancer with chest X-ray or
sputum cytology has not been found to result
in a reduction in lung cancer mortality.
5
Risk Factors
Smoking is the leading risk factor for lung
cancer . More than 95 percent of lung cancers
