Rising Lung Cancer Rates Foil Greater Progress
in Cutting Overall Cancer Death in Wisconsin
Madison (June 27, 2006) – Wisconsin fell far short of its goal of reducing
cancer mortality by 25% by the year 2000.
“All-site cancer mortality decreased by 7% from 1984-1986 to 1999-2001,”
according to researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and
Wisconsin’s Division of Public Health. Their study is published in the latest issue
of the Wisconsin Medical Journal (Volume 105, No. 4).
Lung cancer deaths dropped 11% among men, but soared by 45% among
women, “resulting in a 5% increase for the entire population.” Since lung cancer
accounts for 25 percent of all cancer deaths, the huge increase in lung cancer
deaths ...

Background
The who classification of lung carcinomas revised in
1999, defines BAC as a non-invasive tumor, and thus
resection should be associated with a favorable
outcome. The aim of this study was to assess survival
following surgical treatment of patients with BAC.

The aim of this study is to summarize the available molecular epidemiologic studies of lung cancer and metabolic
genes, such as NAD(P)H quinone reductase 1 ( NQO1 ) and myeloperoxidase ( MPO ). NQO1 plays a dual role in the
detoxification and activation of procarcinogens whereas MPO has Phase I activity by converting lipophilic carcin-
ogens into hydrophilic forms. Variant genotypes of both NQO1 Pro187 Ser and MPO G-463A polymorphisms may
be related to low enzyme activity. The Pro/Ser and Ser/Ser genotypes combined of NQO1 was significantly
associated with decreased risk of lung cancer in Japanese ...

Genetic events at chromosome 3p have been implicated in the development of non-small cell
lung carcinoma (NSCLC). A number of known and putative tumour-suppressor genes reside
within this region, including CACNA2D2 . This is a candidate tumour-suppressor gene which
is located at 3p21. Although CACNA2D2 expression has previously been analysed in some
lung cancer cell lines, its role in the development of primary NSCLC has yet to be elucidated.
In this study, expression ...

New Approaches to Lung Cancer : Translating Clinical
Research into Clinical Practice

Program Overview/Statement of Need
Lung cancer is the most lethal form of cancer in both men and
women in the United States and will account for more than
163,000 deaths in 2005. Unfortunately, more than 40% of
patients present with metastatic disease at time of diagnosis.
Despite the investigational efforts over the past several years
that have provided profound changes in the approach to non-
small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the prognosis for patients
presenting with locally advanced or metastatic disease remains
poor. This program will discuss novel therapeutic approaches
to the disease that are critically needed as long-term survival is
rarely achieved with conventional chemotherapy alone.
Fortunately, advances in the understanding of the fundamental
biology ...

Using the transfusion wristband system does not require
any portable scanner or sophisticated computer support.
The method is cheap to run (HK$2 to HK$3 per wrist-
band), is user-friendly, and can be readily implemented
in any hospital. Acomparison of the two systems is shown
in the Table.

Macmillan Cancer Care and The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation Press Release:
People dying needlessly from lung cancer say two leading charities
1.11.2005
Lung cancer claims the lives of 92 people a day but more could be saved if only it was detected earlier say Macmillan Cancer Relief and The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.
For 80 per cent of people with lung cancer their disease is inoperable because it has been diagnosed so late. If people were diagnosed at a much earlier stage, it would be possible for many more of them to have an operation that could potentially cure their cancer say Macmillan (1) and The Foundation (2).
Professor Jessica Corner, Director for Improving Cancer Services, Macmillan Cancer Relief, said: " Lung cancer is the UK's biggest cancer killer. We want to hit home the message that early diagnosis ...
