In the United States, lung cancer has been the leading cause of cancer death in
men for years, and since 1988, it has become the number-one cause of cancer
death in women. It is estimated that 171,900 new cases of lung cancer will be
diagnosed in 2003, and 157,200 deaths due to this disease will occur. This
exceeds the combined number of deaths from the second, third, and fourth
leading causes of cancer (breast, prostate, and colon cancer , respectively).
Lung cancer appears to develop from a stem cell that can differentiate along
multiple lines. Although ...

Radiotherapy for elderly non-small cell lung cancer patients

From [147.52.72.117] Last viewed: 30.07.2004
Abstract.
Elderly patients with lung cancer tend to have
significant coexisting diseases and less aggressive treatment
is often required. To investigate the clinicopathological
features of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in elderly
patients who were treated with radiotherapy, we reviewed the
medical records at our division. Among the 189 patients 70
years or older between 1992 and 2001, 28 (14.8%) patients
were treated with radiotherapy (elderly group). In the elderly
group, there was a medical history of chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD) (57.1%), cardiovascular disease
(32.1%), diabetes mellitus (18.5%), malignant disease
(18.5%), or cerebrovascular disease (10.7%). Moreover, in
the elderly group, 17 (60.7%) patients had two or three
coexisting diseases. There was statistical difference between
the elderly group and the younger group (less than 70 years
patients) ...

Imaging Lung Cancer
Edward F. Patz, Jr
Imaging plays an essential role in diagnosing, staging,
and following patients with lung cancer . Most tumors
are found on chest radiographs, although further eval-
uation with thoracic computed tomography is per-
formed to stage local disease. Additional radiologic
studies, including radionuclide bone scan, brain com-
puted tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging are
typically used in select patients in the search for
thoracic
More recently, whole body
positron emission tomography imaging has become an
extremely useful tool in evaluating the primary tumor,
regional lymph nodes, and distant sites of disease in
lung cancer patients. With continued improvements in
diagnostic imaging modalities, definition of risk groups,
discovery of molecular markers, and development of
new therapeutic strategies, improved survival ...

Splenic metastasis of lung cancer
[65,6 KB]
From [147.52.72.117] Last viewed: 30.07.2004
Abstract.
Splenic metastasis from a lung cancer is infrequently
noted, however, the pattern of the metastasis has not been
studied, thus we conducted a retrospective study. Twelve of
the consecutive 997 patients with lung cancer , who were
admitted to our division, developed splenic metastasis. The
pattern of splenic metastasis involved solitary nodule in 7
patients (58.3%); multiple nodules in 4, and microscopic
metastasis in 1. All of the 12 patients had other abdominal
organ metastasis. Splenic mass accompanying metastasis to
other abdominal organs in a patient with a known lung
cancer should be regarded as a metastasis.
Introduction
Although numerous articles have reported cases of abdominal
visceral metastasis from lung cancer (1,2), metastasis to
the spleen from lung cancer is considered rare and usually
is detected only at autopsy (3-5). And early ...

Peritoneal carcinomatosis in lung cancer patients

From [147.52.72.117] Last viewed: 30.07.2004
Abstract.
Metastatic involvement of the peritoneum is not
a very rare autopsy finding. Clinically, however, peritonitis
carcinomatosis from a lung cancer is infrequently encountered
and the pattern of the metastasis has not been studied. A total
of 1041 patients with lung cancer who were admitted to our
division over a 26-year period were retrospectively analyzed.
Twelve (1.2%) of the 1041 patients with advanced lung
cancer developed peritoneal carcinomatosis in their clinical
courses. The incidence of peritoneal carcinomatosis was high
in patients with large cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma.
Six and 9 of the 12 patients had metastases in intra-abdominal
sites and pleural seeding, respectively. The median survival
time from the diagnosis of peritoneal carcinomatosis was 2
months. Ascites accompanying metastasis to abdominal
organs and pleural seeding in a patient with a known ...

MICROARRAY EXPRESSION ANALYSIS IN THE STUDY OF LUNG
TUMORIGENESIS: OF MICE AND MAN
Mark W. Geraci, MD
This presentation focuses predominantly on the use of Affymetrix microarrays to study of
lung cancer . For the purposes of this presentation, all tumor samples are compared to
adjacent uninvolved lung in order to define genes that discriminate tumor from adjacent
lung . There are several data issues specific to the platform, which include, 1) data
filtering for the presence and absence of genes 2) variability filtering within a class, 3) the
issue of fold change as a marker of significance, and 4) the different feature analysis
protocols.
The evaluation of human non-small cell lung cancer samples have yielded insight into the
biology of tumor progression, and aided in the development of biomarkers of the disease.
The widespread utilization of tissue microarrays allows for ...

New procedures available for lung cancer patients
Lung cancer patients are benefiting from new interventional bronchoscopy procedures in the Calgary
Health Region.
Dr. Alain Tremblay, a respirologist at Foothills Hospital and one of few physicians in Canada who
performs these procedures, offers lung cancer patients an opportunity to have tumors removed by guiding a
catheter and camera through the trachea in a minimally invasive procedure. Prior to these procedures, the
only available treatment for lung cancer patients was radiation therapy.
"These procedures improve the quality of life, and in some cases can extend length of life," says Tremblay.
"We are able to remove blockages in the lungs caused by inflammatory disease, tumors or scarring with
procedures that reduce hospitalization stays from two weeks to as soon as the next day."
The procedures ...

The incidence of lung cancer in men is high but has decreased by 21% since
1989-91, and in women increased up to 1989-91 and has been stable since.
Mortality from lung cancer followed similar trends reducing by 17% in men since
1980-82 and increasing by 46% in women between 1980-82 and 1989-91 and
remaining stable since. Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality
amongst men and the second highest cause of cancer mortality amongst women
in South Australia.

Background: In a prior study, we found a possible correlation between gender and prognosis in non-small cell
stage I lung cancer (NSCLC), showing a better survival rate among females. This is in accordance with some
other reported studies. The purpose of this study was to further clarify the role of gender as a possible
prognostic factor in NSCLC. ...
