Introduction
Brain metastases are common patterns of dis-
semination in lung cancer patients. In the
natural course of disease in around 17% of pa-
tients with squamous carcinoma, in 24% of
patients with anaplastic carcinoma, in 39% of
patients with adenocarcinoma and in 42%
with small cell carcinoma brain metastases
will develop.

Introduction
Lung malignancies represent a repeated
problem in the respiratory clinics constantly
arousing attention due to the rapid evolution,
extremely bad prognosis and frightening
number of new patients every following year.
Lung cancer is the most frequent pathology
among all malignancies with more than
1000 000/year, and the main cause of death in
29% in this pathology. The distribution shows
dominance in the developing countries with
61%, mainly due to the early presence of
smoking habits.
1,2
The 5-year survival is the
lowest one, compared to the most frequent
cancers: (colon 63%, breast 83%, prostate can-
cer 93%).
2,3
It remains alarmatic low: from 8%
in 1960 to 14% 2001. On the other hand there
is a dramatic difference in the 5-year survival,
related to the stadium of the disease. The lo-
calized form of the disease shows ...

Pubic bone metastasis as first manifestation of lung cancer

From [www.onko-i.si] Last viewed: 13.07.2004
Introduction
Lung cancer is a severe disease often diag-
nosed a late stage when surgical resection is
no longer possible because of local advance-
ment or distant metastasis.
1
Bone metastases
from lung cancer may occur early in the clin-
ical course and are usually discovered with
severe pain.
2-4
The spine and ribs are often the earliest
sites of bone metastases, whereas the skull,
femur, humerus, and scapula are involved lat-
er.
5
Pubic bone metastasis as the initial man-
ifestation of lung cancer is very rare. We re-
port a case of particular interest because of
unusual bone metastatic site and the relative-
ly slow progression of the neoplasm.

This note provides background information on S1M-1273, for debate on 16 November

THE ISSUE
S1M-1273 reads: 'that the Parliament notes the plight of shipyard workers and
their families who were exposed to asbestos, became ill and have now contracted
mesothelioma; expresses concern over the length of time their compensation
cases are taking to reach conclusion and the use of so-called "blanket denials" by
the defenders, and notes that this practice victimises and denies justice to these

The International System for Staging Lung Cancer is a consistent, reproducible classification
for the anatomic extent of disease in patients with lung cancer . A revision of the system in use
since 1986 included modifications of the rules for stage grouping the TNM (T-primary tu-
mor, N-regional lymph nodes, and M-distant metastasis) anatomic subsets. More specific
stage categories and consistency for reporting the end results for Stage I, Stage II, and Stage
IIIA disease are provided. Survival data support the revised categories and confirm the sig-

Lung Cancer and
Exposure to Ionizing Radiation
Summary
:
Studies conducted at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and other nuclear facilities
suggest an increased likelihood of developing lung cancer for workers who have been exposed to ionizing
radiation. These findings are consistent with the determination of the National Research Council’s BEIR V
committee that lung tissue if sensitive to ionizing radiation. Lung cancer is a “specified” cancer under the
Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act. Historically, lung cancer incidence
and mortality ranked among the lowest in the state for both Los Alamos and Rio Arriba Counties.

November is ? lung cancer awareness month
A group of lung cancer nurses from the Yorkshire region are trying to raise awareness of the dangers of the disease throughout the month of November.
The forum, which is made up of Macmillan and hospital trust nurses, will be on hand with leaflets and displays within the local hospitals and health centres across the district, trying to get across the message ?early diagnosis saves lives?.
Janet Harrison, Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist at Airedale NHS Trust:
?Here at Airedale we have an excellent level of care of lung cancer patients and we have a very personal service. Our team of staff has recently been shortlisted for a national award because of the level and type of care we provide. We try and keep the patient as number one and follow a holistic approach. ?

In 1963, it was found that a large group of asbestos insulation workers in the New York
metropolitan area had experienced unusual mortality during 1943-1962.
1
Six hundred and thirty-two
men had been on the union's rolls on January 1, 1943. By December 31, 1962, 262 men had died,
nine before reaching 20 years on the job. Of those who died after 20 years from first employment,
lung cancer was found in marked excess; 6.02 such deaths had been expected, and 42 occurred.
In addition, there were several deaths due to pleural or peritoneal mesothelioma and a modest
increase in deaths due to, gastrointestinal ...

Abstract
For cancers with more than one risk factor, the sum of estimated numbers of
cancers attributed to the individual factors may exceed the total number of cases
observed. In this study we bound the fraction of lung cancer occurrences not at-
tributed to specific well-studied causes, in order to keep estimates of the less well
delimited risks consistent with those of known risks. Available data and expert
judgment are used to attribute portions of the observed lung cancer incidence to
known causes such as smoking, residential radon and asbestos exposure, to de-
scribe the uncertainty surrounding these estimates, and quantify the interaction
between pollutants. An upper bound on the residual risk is inferred using a co-
herence constraint ...

ASCO/FDA Lung Cancer Endpoints Workshop
April 15, 2003
[The following comments reflect the opinions of the workshop participants and do not necessarily represent the views of the FDA]
Introductory Remarks
Dr. Paul Bunn welcomed everyone in attendance and noted that the ASCO/FDA Lung Cancer Endpoints Panel had intentionally been established with a broad membership?including representatives from industry, advocacy groups, and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), as well as FDA and ASCO?in order to obtain input from a wide variety of perspectives on the topic of endpoints in clinical trials whose purpose is to support applications for the approval of new anti- cancer drugs or supplemental indications for already-approved anti- cancer drugs. All panel members share an interest in getting safe and effective drugs for cancer treatment to the public as quickly as possible, he said. ...

Lung cancer is the second
most common cancer , ac-
counting for about one out
of five malignancies in men
and one out of nine in
women. Unfortunately,
over the past several
years, while the incidence
of lung cancer has gradu-
ally declined in men, it has
been rising alarmingly in
women. In 1940 only seven
women in 100,000 devel-
oped the disease; today
the rate is 42 in 100,000.
