Primary non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma of the female genital tract
is a rare condition, accounting for approximately 1% of
primary extranodal lymphomas.
1
Freeman et al. in a review of
12447 cases of lymphoma , found only 10 cases related to the
female genital tract.
2
NHL present insidiously. Majority
present with painless superficial lymph adenopathy. Less
commonly extranodal regions are the primary site of disease.
Because of its rarity, no consensus exists on the management
and treatment of primary NHL of the female genital tract.
3
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma usually affects older adults and,
therefore, women are seldom found to have NHL when they
are pregnant.

LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA
Leukemia and lymphoma are cancers that originate in the bone marrow (makes different types of
blood cells; white, red and platelets) or lymphatic tissues as the result of an acquired genetic injury
to the DNA of a single cell, which becomes malignant and multiplies. Leukemia and lymphoma
interfere with the production of healthy blood cells.
Risk Factors
•
Chronic exposure to benzene or formaldehyde in the workplace
•
Exposure to doses of irradiation
•
Exposure to infectious agents
•
Cancer patients treated with certain cancer fighting drugs (chemotherapy) may develop
leukemia.
•
Down syndrome (leukemia)
•
Myelodysplastic syndrome (blood disease linked to leukemia)
•

Around 45,000 people in the UK are living with the disease and incidence

Given the appropriate treatment at the appropriate time, many lymphoma
patients can have their disease managed effectively or even be cured. There have
been huge advances in treatment which have resulted in more patients surviving,
and with a better quality of life.
However much remains to be done. This manifesto identifies the changes that are
required throughout the patient journey if all today’s lymphoma patients, as well

KEY BENEFITS: Acquire tissue once for multiple and complementary purposes. Avoid ethical issue of acquiring tissue

benefit from standard treatment in future.
BACKGROUND: Patient interest is an important starting point for study design. Patients with untreated stable disease
provide an important untapped opportunity to investigate immune therapies, while also increasing our understanding of

Attribute Selection Methods Comparison for
Classification of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma
Helyane Bronoski Borges, and Júlio Cesar Nievola
Abstract —
The most important subtype of non-Hodgkin’s
lymphoma is the Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma . Approximately
40% of the patients suffering from it respond well to therapy,
whereas the remainder needs a more aggressive treatment, in order to
better their chances of survival. Data Mining techniques have helped
to identify the class of the lymphoma in an efficient manner. Despite
that, thousands of genes should be processed to obtain the results.
This paper presents a comparison of the use of various attribute
selection methods aiming to reduce the number of genes to be
searched, looking for a more effective procedure as a whole.
Keywords —
Attribute selection, data mining.

Introduction: Kyphoplasty is now a widely performed procedure to treat vertebral compression
fractures (VCF). In selecting appropriate patients for kyphoplasty, it is important to distinguish the
pain caused by VCFs from other numerous causes of back pain. The differential diagnosis must
consider not only osteoporosis, but also various causes of osteomalacia, endocrinopathy, and
malignancy. It has recently been demonstrated that a biopsy taken during kyphoplasty confers no
increased morbidity, and that even in the setting of normal laboratory values can identify patients with
multiple myeloma. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of underlying metabolic

FISH for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
Using current World Health Organization criteria, the diagnosis and classification of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) requires cor-
relation of morphologic findings with other ancillary data that may include cytogenetic findings. Several types of non-Hodgkin
lymphoma are associated with specific, recurring cytogenetic abnormalities that are of diagnostic significance (1-3).
Interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) studies offer the ability to detect cytogenetic abnormalities in nondividing
cells. FISH studies are especially valuable in lymph node or other solid tissue biopsies because they can be performed on for-
malin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues and can, therefore, provide cytogenetic information even when material is not available
for traditional banded karyotyping studies.
The Reference Laboratory at The Cleveland Clinic offers FISH analysis for the following cytogenetic abnormalities: ...

Introduction
Follicular lymphoma is the second most frequent type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), accounting for
20-25% of all presentations [1]. The course of disease is often characterized by initial responses to
therapy, but with inevitable relapses, sometimes with histologic transformation to aggressive histology
NHL [2]. Thus, the disease is considered incurable and current treatment paradigms are focused on
palliation of symptoms and minimizing treatment ...

Lymphoma of Bone
Lymphoma of bone accounts for approximately seven per cent of all primary
malignant tumors of bone and can be divided roughly into two clinical groups –
Hodgkin’slymphoma of bone and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma of bone. Hodgkin’s
lymphoma of bone carries a much beter prognosis for survival. t tends to be
localized and presents with a radiographic appearance that includes a dense,
sclerotic response. The non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas can be divided into two
categories. The systemic form, the most common form with generalized
involvement of the entire lymphatic system including sof tissue and bone,
carries a poor prognosis. The less common form that is found in bone and does
not have systemic manifestations carries a beter prognosis for survival. To meet
the strict criteria for a primary lymphoma of bone, disease must be contained
within the skeletal system for at least six months before becoming disseminated ...

Angiogenesis and mast cells in Hodgkin lymphoma
Leukemia advance online publication, 13 October 2005;
doi:10.1038/sj.leu.2403992
TO THE EDITOR
Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) differs from other lymphomas because
the malignant cells, the Hodgkin and Reed–Sternberg (HRS)
cells, are in minority and the majority of the tissue consists of
surrounding benign cells, for example, eosinophilic granulo-
cytes and mast cells, fibrosis and a varying number of
microvessels. It has recently been reported that angiogenesis
correlates to poor prognosis in HL.
1
We have previously reported that HL patients with many mast
cells in their tumour tissue have a worse prognosis.
2
Mast cells
produce functionally active CD30 ligand (CD30L) and the poorer
prognosis has been proposed to be caused by a stimulation of
HRS by CD30L.

Furthermore, we ...

Polymorphisms in cytochrome P450 17A1 and risk
of non-Hodgkin lymphoma
Immune function, believed to be important in lymphomagen-
esis, is influenced by cross-talk between the endocrine and
immune systems via hormones, such as oestrogen (reviewed in
McMurray, 2001). Oestrogen has multiple effects on lympho-
poietic cells including the modulation of lymphocyte growth,
antigen presentation, and production of antibodies and
cytokines (Olsen & Kovacs, 1996). Furthermore, oestrogen
receptors are expressed in various hematopoietic cell types
including lymphocytes, bone marrow and lymphoma cell lines.
Therefore, the risk of lymphoproliferative diseases such as non-
Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) may be influenced by hormonal
modulation. Few studies have examined the relationship
between oestrogen exposure, reproductive factors and lym-
phoma and published findings are contradictory (Nelson et al , ...
