1 MEET THE EXPERT ON NON-HODGKIN LYMPHOMA : N E W I N S I G H T S A N D T R E AT M E N T S MS. BANACKY: My name is Illona Banacky. I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma on November 13, 2003. At the time, my doctor explained that there were a few options available. These included chemotherapy through pills or intravenous therapy, and the most aggressive would be stem cell transplant. When I first diagnosed, I think I went into treatment too quickly. I think before you even opt to go into immediate treatment, do the research first and make sure that you’re comfortable with the doctor and the facility where you are being treated. I think it was important that the doctor and everyone around me — family, friends — understood what I was going through, not just emotionally, but also the treatment options, and helped me decide which road ...

accounting for about 4%-14% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas in Western countries (2,3). Within the GI tract, the stomach is the most frequent site of involvement constituting up to 10% of all gastric malignancies; its incidence appears to be increasing but this may be due to the recognition of the neo- plastic nature of lesions previously termed "pseudolymphoma" (4). Most cases occur in adults with a median age of 61years and slight preponderance in women (male: female ratio 1:1.2) (5, 6). PRECURSOR LESIONS/CONDITIONS In many cases of MALT lymphoma , there is a history of chronic inflammato- ry, often autoimmune disorders that result in accumulation of extranodal lym- phoid tissue. Examples include Helicobacter pylori associated chronic gastri- tis, Sjögren syndrome of Hashimoto thyroiditis.
