INTRODUCTION
araneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNSs) present as
remote neurological effects of cancer in which nervous
system dysfunction develops without evidence of direct invasion
of tumor into neural tissue or of infectious or vascular complica-
tions. PNSs occur in about 1% to 6% of all cancer patients.
Almost all tumor types may be associates with PNSs, but small
cell lung cancer (SCLC), thymoma, ovary and breast cancer are
by far the most common. Testicular carcinoma, melanoma, and
lymphoma are less likely to trigger the PNSs.
Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis (PLE) is a rare disorder char-
acterized by psychiatric symptoms, seizures, and short-term
memory loss. Symptoms may precede the tumor diagnosis by
some months. At least half of the patients harbor ...

Burkitt’s lymphoma presenting as lower lip paraesthesia in a 24 ...

From [www.ada.org.au] Last viewed: 30.07.2004
Abstract
An unusual case of stage D Burkitt’s lymphoma in a
24 year old Nigerian female undergraduate is
reported. There was a four month history of left
lower lip paraesthesia followed three months later
by a slowly progressive ‘pimple-sized’ nodular
mandibular swelling arising from the mental
foramen region. A full-blown, rapidly developing
abdominal mass manifested only three weeks after
a biopsy of the mandibular swelling. Aspiration of
the latter and a histologic report of the mandibular
mass confirmed Burkitt’s lymphoma . The patient
responded very well to appropriate chemotherapy.
Clinicians should not overlook insidious jaw
swellings in any adult residing in the endemic zone
of Burkitt’s lymphoma , in view of the fact that
successful therapy is dependent on early diagnosis.
Mental nerve paraesthesia is very rarely seen in
Burkitt’s lymphoma .

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma presenting as a sacral tumor
[93,7 KB]
From [www.aans.org] Last viewed: 30.07.2004
Neoplasms of the sacrum are relatively uncommon,
representing 1 to 2% of all musculoskeletal tumors.
2
They
can be classified as primary or metastatic lesions, the for-
mer being either benign or malignant. The most common
malignancy of the sacrum is metastatic disease, whereas
the most common primary sacral tumor is chordoma.
Other sacral malignant lesions include Ewing sarcoma,
myeloma, osteosarcoma, neurofibrosarcoma, angiosarco-
ma, chondrosarcoma, and rarely lymphoma . Referred pain
in the leg or buttock is the typical presenting symptom of
sacral tumors. Neurological signs are rarely seen, and their
manifestation is often late. We describe two rare cases in
which diffuse large B-cell lymphomas presented as pri-
mary malignant sacral tumors.

surprisingly including the group with the most favor-
able prognosis, did not profit from standard induction
therapy and had a comparable outcome with palliative
therapy. However, in some patients, such as those with
a high white cell count, standard induction therapy
may be superior to palliative therapy. Clearly, further
studies to evaluate risk factors, molecular biology and
detailed quality of life aspects of the elderly patients
with AML are needed. If we learn more about the
diversity of AML in the elderly, we will be able to cre-

Primary lymphoma of the testis is a rather
rare disease. It accounts for around 1% of all

than 10% of all testicular neoplasms.
However, in men over 60, it is the most com-

Molecular insight into the diagnosis of lymphoma
[89,7 KB]
From [147.52.72.117] Last viewed: 30.07.2004
Abstract.
Malignant lymphoma may be very difficult to
diagnose with routine histopathological methods because
they may recapitulate benign architecture or contain benign
infiltrates. The best method of diagnosis is to establish the
clonal profile of the lymphocyte population, since a mono-
clonal proliferation is highly suggestive of neoplasia. By
means of a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) method it is
possible to detect the immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH)
gene rearrangement and therefore establish the lymphocyte
clonality. PCR with primers complementary to relatively
conserved regions called frameworks (FR1-FR3) laying
among hyper variable regions (CDR1-CDR3) of IgH gene
unable us to detect monoclonal versus polyclonal B-cell
population. The length of the PCR product with these primers
is unique if we deal with a monoclonal population. On the
contrary, a polyclonal population gives PCR products ...

Abstract.
Undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasopharyngeal

(HL) (‘Hodgkin's lymphoma -like UCNT’ - HL-like UCNT) is
known as a diagnostic pitfall. Using immunohistochemistry,
Western blot and cDNA array technology, we wanted to
document its phenotypical and molecular characteristics. We
report herein 5 cases of UCNT that morphologically mimic
HL and 3 classical UCNT cases. We compared the expression
profiles of a thousand selected genes in HL-like UCNT and in
classical UCNT cases. No difference in the profile of EBV
infection was noted between the HL-like UCNT and control
cases. Significant differences were detected in the expression
of genes involved in the matrix modelling, angiogenesis,
apoptosis and regulation of the Th-2 interleukins. The
eosinophil chemoattractant eotaxin was expressed in the
stroma of HL-like UCNT, but not ...

ABSTRACT
We report the case of an HIV-seropositive patient with non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the small
intestine who presented with an ileocolic intussusception. This lesion fulfilled the diagnostic
criteria for primary gastrointestinal lymphoma . Such a neoplasm in an immunocompromised
patient is usually more aggressive and less responsive to treatment than in an HIV-seronegative
patient.

INTRODUCTION
ntravascular lymphoma (IVL) is a very rare form of non-
Hodgkin's lymphoma , characterized by widespread
intravascular proliferation of malignant lymphoid cells often pre-
senting with nonspecific clinical features and extremely poor
prognosis. The terminology used to describe this entity is variable
and suggests endothelial origin of neoplastic cells. The most used
term is neoplastic (malignant) angioendotheliomatosis or
angioendotheliosis. However, there is conclusive evidence that
this tumor represents a special form of malignant lymphoma (1-
4) and therefore intravascular lymphoma is the most appropriate
name for this disease. Although not specifically recognized by the

Abstract.
Whether a common and a single clone present, or
not, among follicles of follicular lymphoma (FL) was
examined in 12 cases with FL. Histologic grade was I in 6
cases, II in 3, and III in 3. DNA was selectively extracted from
the neoplastic follicles of paraffin-embedded samples with
use of laser capture microdissection method, and used for
PCR-based analysis of rearrangement of immunoglobulin
heavy chain variable region gene. Three different follicles in
each case of FL were microdissected. Semi-nested PCR was
performed using two sets of primers (Fr2A and Fr3A). In PCR
with Fr2A primers, nine of 12 cases showed a common band
among neoplastic follicles. The remaining three cases
showed no PCR products. With Fr3A primers, eight of 12
cases showed a common band among follicles of the same
case. The other four cases showed oligoclonal bands, among
them presence of a common band was difficult ...

Abstract.
Reduced apoptosis is associated to cancer
development. Agents able to restore the programmed cell
death responsiveness of cancer cells are foreseen as potential
effective cancer therapies. In this study, we report that a
glutathione-S-derivative, S-acetyl-glutathione (Sag), induces
significant apoptosis in three human lymphoma cell lines,
including Daudi, Raji and Jurkat cells while it had no or little
effect on either Hut-78 lymphoma cells or the normal BT
lymphocytes. We used Annexin-V FACS analysis and DNA
laddering to demonstrate that Sag activated apoptosis in
the three sensitive cell lines in a dose- and time-dependent-
fashion. Using mercury orange staining and FACS analysis,
we showed that Sag generated an intracellular GSH depletion
in Daudi, Raji and Jurkat cells but not in Hut-78 or the
normal BT cells. These data provide direct evidence that Sag
specifically activates ...

that 5-HT can efficiently drive pro-
grammed cell death in established Burkitt
lymphoma (BL) lines that remain faithful
to the original biopsy phenotype (group
1). Group 1 BL cells cultured in the pres-
ence of 5-HT exhibited marked suppres-
sion of DNA synthesis that was accompa-
nied by extensive apoptosis—serotonin-
driven apoptosis was complete within 24
hours, was preceded by early caspase
activation, ...

eprosy is an ancient disease, and although the
treatment for leprosy has been available for
several decades, the number of cases of lep-
rosy worldwide was recently estimated to be
approximately 5.5 million.
1
Most cases of leprosy occur
in tropical countries. In the United States, indigenous
transmission has been recorded in Hawaii, Pacific
island territories, and sporadically along the Gulf
Coast.
2
Generally, patients with leprosy do not experience
increased morbidity as a result of viral, fungal, or pro-
tozoal infections, for which cellular immunity is an
important defense mechanism. Mycobacterium leprae
infection has not been shown to predispose patients
to an increased risk for neoplasia,
2
and Hodgkin’s
lymphoma has rarely been reported in a patient with
leprosy.

In contrast, several cases of leprosy have

Primary renal lymphoma

INTRODUCTION
Systemic non-Hodgkin lymphoma with renal in-
volvement is not an uncommon clinical presentation
1
. In contrast, primary renal lymphoma is an extremely
rare tumor. To our knowledge, only about 39 cases
have been reported since 1926
2-5
. Therefore, We thought
it is worthwhile to report our experience with a pa-
tient who suffered from bilateral renal lymphoma and
who had no other identifiable primary site. Clinical-
ly, he presented with intermittent abdominal pain ini-
tially, then renal insufficiency and uremia in rapid
progression.
CASE PRESENTATION
A previously healthy 4-year-old boy presented with
intermittent abdominal pain for two weeks and was
treated as functional gastroenteral disturbance by a
local medical practitioner since April, 1996. The in-
termittent abdominal ...

Diagnosis and Treatment
by Dr. Leanne Ksiazek
November 3, 1996 A one-year-old intact hob, Emmett, is
brought in with increased respiratory rate and effort. He has
been showing symptoms for 2 days. Weight is 3 pounds, he
has been eating well, is active, bright and alert. Mucous mem-
branes are pink and moist. Capillary refill time is approximate-
ly 2 sec. Heart is within normal limits, lungs bilaterally dull.
Abdominal exam reveals splenomegaly. X-ray shows a large
mediastinal mass with elevation of the trachea with signifi-
cant amount of pleural effusion. Ferret is admitted and sedat-
ed with atropine and ketamine IM. His chest is tapped, and
5ml of fluid are extracted. An IV catheter is inserted, ...
