PDF   From [content.nejm.org]  Last viewed: 30.07.2004
Abstract. More than a decade of experimental work in an inbred subline of Sprague-Dawley rats having high incidence of spontaneous T-cell lymphoma /leukaemia is reviewed. Longitudinal follow-up of biological charac- teristics (growth, survival, haematology) of both multi- ple cases of primary disease and s.c. passaged lym- phomas as well as comparative immunophenotypic and karyotypic studies are concluded. In these T-cell lym- phomas (mostly CD4 positive), arising on the same genetic background of the inbred SD strain, the aberra- tions involving chromosome 11 have been recognized as a typical non-random cytogenetic marker. This unique rat model of lymphoblastic lymphomas/leukaemias, rel- evant to human pathology, seems to be very suitable for testing different anticancer therapeutic strategies, as it is documented by results of a number of various protocols conducted ...

Section 4 – Your Child’s Diagnosis – Hodgkin Lymphoma Page 1 of 3 Hodgkin Lymphoma What is Hodgkin Lymphoma ? Hodgkin Lymphoma is a form of cancer, which affects the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is the body’s natural defence against infection. It is made up of a collection of lymph glands located throughout the body in the neck, armpits, chest, abdomen and groin. These glands are connected to tiny lymph vessels. The tonsils and spleen also belong to the lymphatic system. Lymphomas are split into two types: Hodgkin Lymphoma and Non –Hodgkin Lymphoma . Who gets Hodgkin Lymphoma ? It is quite rare in children under 5 years but has an increased incidence in ages15-19. For unknown reasons it is more common in boys than girls. What causes Hodgkin Lymphoma ? The cause is unknown, with no proven risk factors. It is not something ...

PTLDs of T-cell lineage are rare, mostly reported after renal transplantation and show less frequent association with EBV. NK-cell lymphomas after transplantation (NK- cell PTLDs) are very rare; only five cases are reported so far in the English literature, all developed after renal transplantation. We describe a case of EBV-associated, extranodal NK-cell lymphoma of nasal type, involving the breast in a cardiac allograft recipient 5 years after transplantation. The lymph node removed showed a diffuse infiltration of lymphoma cells consisting of large blastic cells (LBC)and signet ring cells (SRC). LBC had a large oval-shaped nucleus, occasionally with one or more nucleoli and scant cytoplasm, while SRC possessed eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusions (Russell bodies) that displaced and distended the nucleus. LBC were CD20+, CD79a+, CD138- and CD10-. SRC were CD 20-, CD79a+, CD138+ and CD10-. Both LBC and SRC contained the same monoclonal cytoplasmic immunoglobulin (IgG, ?). Anti-CD 21 and anti-CD23 antibodies failed to stain the proliferative areas of the lymphoma cells. Somatic ...

Section 4 – Your Child’s Diagnosis – Non Hodgkin Lymphoma Page 1 of 3 Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL) What is Non Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL)? Non Hodgkin Lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is the body’s natural defence against infection. It is made up of a collection of lymph glands (nodes) which are located throughout the body in the neck, armpits, chest, abdomen and groin. Tiny vessels connect these glands. The tonsils and spleen also belong to the lymphatic system. To understand non Hodgkin lymphoma , it is helpful to know about normal cells and what happens when they become cancerous. The body is made up of many types of cells. Normally, cells grow and divide producing new cells only when the body needs them. Sometimes cells keep dividing when new cells are not needed, creating a mass of extra tissue. This mass is called a growth or ...

[1667] New Finding Will Improve Lymphoma, Autoimmune Disorder Treatments
PDF   From [www.dukemednews.org]  Last viewed: 25.07.2004
New Finding Will Improve Lymphoma , Autoimmune Disorder Treatments DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University Medical Center immunologists have pinpointed how a widely used treatment for non Hodgkin's lymphoma attacks abnormal immune cells, called B cells. They believe that their discovery in mice of how the antibody rituximab kills B cells will lead to improved treatments. Such improvement is critically important, since the drug is currently effective in only about half of lymphoma patients, and virtually all patients experience eventual relapse and cease responding to the drug. The drug also has similar drawbacks in its use as a treatment for autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, in which abnormal B cells attack the body's own tissues. Led by Thomas Tedder, Ph. D., professor and chair of immunology, the researchers published their findings June 21, 2004, in the advanced online version of the Journal of Experimental Medicine. ...

INTRODUCTION Among the non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas (NHL), low-grade B-cell lymphomas refer to small lymphocytic lymphoma , follicular lymphoma , marginal-zone B- cell lymphoma , and lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma . In Europe and the United States, low-grade B-cell lymphomas account for 25 to 40% of NHL. Recent studies of Japanese patients with lym- phoma have reported that low-grade B- cell lymphomas, follicular lymphomas, and marginal-zone B-cell lymphomas account for 15 to 25%, 7 of 15%, and 10 of 12% of the total NHL, respectively. 1,2 The main characteristics ...
