DR. GOLDBERG:
Patients who have a new diagnosis of lymphoma , as well as patients who have an
established diagnosis, always need to know a little bit more about their disease so
that they can participate in their own care. The doctor is just one part of dealing
with this disease. The doctor may give you advice on how to treat and may
actually initiate the therapy, but treatment doesn’t just stop when you leave the
doctor’s office. It actually starts then, as you deal with family at home, as you
deal with decisions about what you’re going to do for the long-term, and the
more you know about your disease, the more you know about the treatment and
what may come down the road. Not only could you help the doctor, ...

Incidence and Mortality
Rate Trends
Lymphoma , including Hodgkin’s lymphoma and
non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), represents
approximately five percent of all cancers in the
United States. While Hodgkin’s lymphoma is the
better-known form of lymphoma , the incidence of
Hodgkin’s lymphoma is much less than that of NHL.
Due to improvements in the treatment of Hodgkin’s
lymphoma , the mortality rate has significantly
decreased over the past 25 years. However the
incidence and mortality rates for NHL have
increased, with the incidence rate nearly doubling,
since the early 1970s, then stabilizing in the last five
years. For both forms of lymphoma , incidence and
mortality rates have been higher for Whites than
African Americans and other ethnic groups.
It is estimated that approximately $3 billion* is
spent in the United States each year on treatment

ABSTRACT
Primary lymphomas of bladder are rare, have a good prognosis and present good response to
chemotherapy. We report a case of primary lymphoma affecting the bladder of an 89-year old female
patient who, despite full response to chemotherapy, presented recurrence and death 1 year after con-
cluding the treatment. The authors emphasize the differential diagnosis due to the great differences
concerning prognosis and therapeutic approach.

Intestinal lymphoma
Ahmet Dogan
Introduction
Extranodal lymphomas account for around 40 % all lymphoid neoplasms and the most common site
they occur is the gastrointestinal tract. The majority arise primarily in the gut however a significant
minority of gut lymphomas is a result of secondary dissemination from other nodal or extranodal
sites. The lymphomas commonly seen in the intestine are listed in Table 1.
In most instances the diagnosis is established by endoscopic biopsies or core biopsies and histologic
interpretation is often challenging. The common diagnostic problems in diagnosis of intestinal
lymphomas are listed in Table 2. The most critical step in the histological diagnosis of a lymphoid
infiltrate is to have a sufficient sample. Often multiple good quality biopsies from different sites
will be required to reach a definitive diagnosis. One should resist clinical pressures ...

Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK)
[119,5 KB]
From [www.propathlab.com] Last viewed: 13.07.2004
The anaplastic lymphomas kinase (ALK) gene is located
on chromosome 2p23, and codes for a protein that is
expressed in some cells of the central nervous
system, but in virtually no other normal human cells.
Interest in this protein among diagnostic pathologists
has been related to its utility in recognizing a subset of
CD30+ anaplastic large cell lymphomas (ALCL's), that
show a characteristic t(2;5)(p23;q35) translocation. This
translocation results in an abnormal fusion gene involv-
ing the ALK gene and the nucleophosmin (NPM) gene
(located on chromosome 5q35), which codes for a
ubiquitously expressed nucleolar phosphoprotein that
functions in transporting components of ribosomes
between the cytoplasm and nucleolus during the final
stages of ribosome assembly. Transcription of this
abnormal NPM-ALK fusion gene results in the produc-
tion of an abnormal protein (called p80) that functions

Exposure to Ionizing Radiation
Summary
: Some evidence has been recorded of a possible connection between non-Hodgkin's
lymphoma and exposure to ionizing radiation. There is possible evidence from studies conducted at Los
Alamos National Laboratory. Studies of nuclear workers at other sites who have been exposed to ionizing
radiation and persons exposed to the atomic bomb show an increase risk of developing non-Hodgkin's
lymphoma . The National Research Council’s BEIR V committee did not address the issue of radiation-
induced non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma . Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is designated as a “specified” ...

The growth of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma is stimulated
by immature dendritic cells
Carole L. Berger, Douglas Hanlon, Daniel Kanada, Madhav Dhodapkar, Vivian Lombillo, Nianci Wang, Inger Christensen,
Gregory Howe, Jill Crouch, Paul El-Fishawy, and Richard Edelson
In the initial stage of cutaneous T-cell
lymphoma (CTCL), proliferating CTCL
cells are concentrated in the epidermis in
close association with an immature den-
dritic cell (DC), the Langerhans cell. Be-
cause long-term in vitro culture of CTCL
cells has proven difficult, the in vivo
association with the major antigen-pre-
senting cell (APC) of the epidermis has
been postulated to play a role in directly
stimulating the clonal T-cell proliferation.
We report that CTCL cells can be repro-
ducibly grown in culture for 3 months
when cocultured with immature DCs.

Abstract. More than a decade of experimental work in
an inbred subline of Sprague-Dawley rats having high
incidence of spontaneous T-cell lymphoma /leukaemia is
reviewed. Longitudinal follow-up of biological charac-
teristics (growth, survival, haematology) of both multi-
ple cases of primary disease and s.c. passaged lym-
phomas as well as comparative immunophenotypic and
karyotypic studies are concluded. In these T-cell lym-
phomas (mostly CD4 positive), arising on the same
genetic background of the inbred SD strain, the aberra-
tions involving chromosome 11 have been recognized as
a typical non-random cytogenetic marker. This unique
rat model of lymphoblastic lymphomas/leukaemias, rel-
evant to human pathology, seems to be very suitable for
testing different anticancer therapeutic strategies, as it is
documented by results of a number of various protocols

Various types of tumor suppressor genes (TSG) have been reported to be mutated in malignant
lymphoma . Point mutation and deletion are the major mechanisms that inactivate TSG. Alterations of
the p53 gene have been analyzed well in lymphoid malignancies, and point mutations have been proved
to have an important role in the progression or aggressiveness of B cell lymphoma . Recently, the
silencing of gene expression by DNA hypermethylation was proposed as an alternative mechanism in
inactivation of TSG. The p73,p15INK4B,and p16INK4A genes are targets of such epigenetic alterations.
The ATM, PTEN, and SNF5/INI1 genes are also reported to be mutated in T and/or B cell malig-
nancies. Recurrent chromosomal deletion may indicate the loss of candidate TSGs in the deleted
interval.

In Früh-
stadien sind lokale Ansätze wie die Bestrahlung mit UV-
oder Röntgenstrahlen sinnvoll. In fortgeschrittenen Sta-
dien werden systemische Therapien wie Interferon-
a
oder Bexarotene empfohlen. Daneben gibt es auch eine
ganze Reihe von experimentellen Ansätzen wie Vakzi-
nierungsansätze ...

The applicability of some commercially available antibodies directed against the
human CD3 antigen in detecting canine T lymphocytes in lymphoma -affected lymph
nodes was evaluated. Rabbit anti-human CD3 Dako A/S antibodies proved successful
in demonstrating canine T cells, even on tissue specimens fixed in formol and
embedded in paraffin wax. The antibodies recognize the intracellular fragment of the
CD3 molecule, which is relatively resistant to routine histological specimen
processing. Other antibodies directed against the CD3 antigen were ...
