22 Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Summary
For the period 1992–1997, relative survival one year after diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s
lymphoma was 73.4% for males and 74.5% for females. Five-year relative survival was
54.6% for males and 55.8% for females (Table 22.1). Survival ten years after diagnosis was
44.0% for males and 45.0% for females in 1987–1991, the most recent period for which ten-
year relative survival data are available (Figure 22.2; Tables 22.2 and 22.3).
No significant changes were detected in one-year relative survival proportions between
1987–1991 and 1992–1997. However, there was a significant increase of 5.0 percentage points
in five-year relative survival for males, and a significant increase of 5.9 percentage points in
five-year relative survival for females (Figure 22.2; Tables 22.2 and 22.3).
Five-year relative survival was higher for those diagnosed in the younger age groups. ...

November 3, 1996 A one-year-old intact hob, Emmett, is
brought in with increased respiratory rate and effort. He has
been showing symptoms for 2 days. Weight is 3 pounds, he
has been eating well, is active, bright and alert. Mucous mem-
branes are pink and moist. Capillary refill time is approximate-
ly 2 sec. Heart is within normal limits, lungs bilaterally dull.
Abdominal exam reveals splenomegaly. X-ray shows a large
mediastinal mass with elevation of the trachea with signifi-
cant amount of pleural effusion. Ferret is admitted and sedat-
ed with atropine and ketamine IM. His chest is tapped, and
5ml of fluid are extracted. An IV catheter is inserted, ...

MANTLE CELL LYMPHOMA
What is lymphoma ?
Lymphomas are cancers that originate in a lymphocyte,
which is a cell found principally in lymph nodes and
other lymphatic tissue sites, such as the skin, spleen
and the wall of the intestines. The transformation of a
lymphocyte to a malignant cell gives it a growth and
survival advantage over normal cells. The malignant
cell multiplies and enlarges the lymph node so that it
may be felt or observed if it is in a location near the
surface of the body. The malignant lymphocytes may
travel to other lymph nodes and those nodes may
enlarge from uncontrolled malignant cell multiplication.

COMPLEMENTARY & ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES
FOR LEUKEMIA, LYMPHOMA , HODGKIN’S
DISEASE, & MYELOMA
Standard medical treatment for leukemia, lymphoma ,
Hodgkin’s disease, or myeloma usually involves either
chemotherapy, radiation therapy or both. This
treatment has been proven through scientific studies to
be effective against these cancers and safe for the
patient. There is no evidence that anything but current
medically approved standard therapy can stem the
progression of or cure these cancers. Therefore,
standard therapy should not be replaced by any
unproven remedy.
Although standard treatment has greatly improved
survival for individuals with these cancers, the side
effects can be difficult. Some persons will wish to seek
out other remedies or techniques, sometimes ...

ABSTRACT
Primary lymphomas of bladder are rare, have a good prognosis and present good response to
chemotherapy. We report a case of primary lymphoma affecting the bladder of an 89-year old female
patient who, despite full response to chemotherapy, presented recurrence and death 1 year after con-
cluding the treatment. The authors emphasize the differential diagnosis due to the great differences
concerning prognosis and therapeutic approach.

In Früh-

Angelos Koutsonikolis, MD*; Noorbibi Day, PhD*; Wilfredo Chamizo, MD†;

Background: Elevation of immunoglobulin E (IgE) is rarely detected in patients
with underlying malignancy. There has been only one report of such a finding in a
patient with a T cell lymphoma and none to our knowledge in association with a
B-cell lymphoma .
Objective: To report a patient with elevation of IgE associated with a B-cell
lineage lymphoma .
Material and Methods: Case report and review of literature.
Results: A 73-year-old woman was found to have elevated IgE (11,766 IU/mL)
in a routine evaluation for rhinitis. No underlying allergic diathesis or disease
associated with IgE elevation was noted. Because of an abnormal lymphocyte
profile, an extensive malignancy evaluation ...

This book is for you
If you are a young person who has lymphoma .
It gives information about lymphoma and how it is treated. It also
covers ways you can look after yourself, and how you may feel.
It is divided into sections
You don’t need to read them in order. Besides information, a
section may contain questions and answers; quotes from young
people; hints and tips.
Young people who have lymphoma are as different
from each other as young people who do not
So, you may find some things in this booklet very helpful and
others not at all. What you find useful could change as you go
through treatment. You may want to show this to your friends and
family so they have some idea of what is going on in your life at
the moment.
