Melanoma
Melanoma can mimic any neoplasm, and should be part of the
differential diagnosis of any neoplasm with a single cell pattern.
The epithelioid variant of melanoma usually has cells 2 to 3
times the size of large cell lymphoma , has prominent nucleoli
and are often binucleate. Helpful immunologic stains include
HMB45 as well as melan A.

CUTANEOUS T-CELL LYMPHOMA
BACKGROUND
Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphomas (CTCL) is the most common form of T-cell lymphoma in adults.
CTCL is considered a form of extranodal, indolent T-cell Non-Hodgkin?s Lymphoma
Encompasses several discrete diseases with the common characteristic of lymphomatous involvement of the skin
CTCL can be subdivided into the following: Mycosis Fungoides, Sezary Syndrome, Large cell cutaneous T-cell lymphoma
Mycosis Fungoides and Sezary Syndrome involves aberrant CD4+ helper T-cells
DEFINITION
Mycosis Fungoides(MF): CD4+ T-cell lymphoma confined to the skin.
Sezary Syndrome: erythrodermic, leukemic variant of Mycosis Fungoides. Original description of syndrome included the following:
Generalized erythroderma
Lymphadenopathy
Atypical T-cells (Sezary cells) in the peripheral blood (>1000/ µ L Sezary cells ...

epidural lymphomas comprise only 7% of
all intracranial lymphomas and must be distin-
guished from meningeal infiltration by the presence
of a systemic lymphoproliferative disorder. Found pre-
dominately in elderly men, primary epidural lymphomas
are often classified as low- or intermediate-grade lesions,
and they are largely composed of centrocytic and centro-
blastic cells. Diagnosis is based on the absence of other
primary or systemic lymphomas, and differential diag-
noses include meningioma and meningeal infiltration by
other primary or metastatic tumors.
We report a case of primary epidural lymphoma in a 70-
year-old man. The immunohistochemical and molecular
features of the tumor indicated centrofollicular differenti-

New Finding Will Improve Lymphoma , Autoimmune Disorder Treatments
DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University Medical Center immunologists have pinpointed how a widely used treatment for non
Hodgkin's lymphoma attacks abnormal immune cells, called B cells. They believe that their discovery in mice of how the
antibody rituximab kills B cells will lead to improved treatments. Such improvement is critically important, since the drug is
currently effective in only about half of lymphoma patients, and virtually all patients experience eventual relapse and cease
responding to the drug. The drug also has similar drawbacks in its use as a treatment for autoimmune diseases such as
rheumatoid arthritis, in which abnormal B cells attack the body's own tissues.
Led by Thomas Tedder, Ph. D., professor and chair of immunology, the researchers published their findings June 21,
2004, in the advanced online version of the Journal of Experimental Medicine. ...

Disease Information
The two main malignant diseases of the lymphoreticular system are non-Hodgkin's
lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease. Lymphoma is a general term applied to a
heterogeneous group of cancers which develop from lymphoreticular tissue. The
lymphoreticular system is part of the immune system. The lymphocyte is the principal
cellular component of lymphoid tissue. There are two major populations of
lymphoreticulum cells, T-cells (lymphocytes processed through the thymus) and B-cells
(thymus independent cells). Other cells of the lymphoreticular system include cells of the
monocyte macrophage series, reticulum supporting cells and ...

Therapy of Aggressive Lymphoma
James O. Armitage
In much of the world, non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas are in-
creasing in frequency. In the United States, approximately
60,000 cases will be diagnosed this year. The explanation
for the rising incidence of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is not
known. However, there have been numerous advances in
our understanding of the biology of the disorder, our ability
to classify them as specific diseases, and our knowledge
about their management.
Classification of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Unlike the related disorder Hodgkin’s disease, non-
Hodgkin’s lymphoma has a firmly established cellular ori-
gin with morphologic subtypes corresponding to various
stages of lymphocyte differentiation. The specific diagno-
sis should be based on the evaluation of an adequate biopsy
specimen by an experienced ...

Transplantation in Lymphoma
James O. Armitage
Since its inception, bone marrow transplantation has been
an obvious treatment to test for patients with lymphoma .
Lymphoma is a chemotherapy-sensitive malignancy in which
escalating the doses of treatment might be expected to in-
crease the cure rate. However, the first cure of lymphoma
using high-dose therapy and autologous bone marrow trans-
plantation was not reported until 1978.
1
Over the ensuing
decade, many of the problems involved in autologous trans-
plantation for patients with lymphoma were resolved, and
high-dose therapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplanta-
tion using either bone marrow or blood derived cells has
become a common treatment.

Research Foundation of America merged to become the Lymphoma Research
Foundation (LRF), the nation’s foremost organization devoted to furthering
lymphoma research and serving the needs of those affected by this disease.
We know that you share in our excitement about the many opportunities this
merger has created to strengthen our fight against lymphoma .
Through this merger, LRF has emerged
with a strong, unified voice to make the needs
of those affected by lymphoma a national pri-

funding of lymphoma research to identify new
treatments, advocate for acceleration of the
approval process of novel therapeutics and

Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in the Elderly
From [www.moffitt.usf.edu] Last viewed: 13.07.2004
Introduction
The overall incidence of non-Hodgkin’s lym-
phoma (NHL) has been rising during the past few
decades.
1,2
According to the National Cancer Insti-
tute, the incidence per 100,000 persons climbed from
8.5 in 1973 to 13.7 in 1987 — an increase of more
than 50%.
3
The increase has been largely confined to
two age groups:men 24 to 54 years of age and individ-
uals = 65 years of age.
2
In fact, data from the Veterans
Affairs medical system have shown that approximate-
ly half of all NHLs now occur in individuals = 60 years
of age.
4
Whereas the increase in NHLs among younger men
is likely the result of the spread of the acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS),
5
reasons for the
increase among older persons remain unclear.
