• First treatment modality in MM patients was 87% HD and 13% PD, without difference
between age groups. Only 1.1% received a transplant while on RRT.
• Figure 3 shows the crude patient survival of MM patients compared to other dialysis patients.
Median survival in the MM group was 11 months. Main causes of death were: malignancy
38%, cardiovascular 16% and infection 16%.
• Figure 4 shows that, adjusted for age and gender, MM patients had a 2.8 times (95%CI 2.6-3.0)
higher risk of death compared to other dialysis patients. Adjusted dialysis patient survival did
not change with time.
Results
• 906 patients started RRT for MM, median age 68 year, 57% male.
• Mean age at start of RRT increased from 64 year in the 1985-1989 cohort to 67 year in the
1995-1999 cohort.
• Crude RRT treated MM incidence increased from 0.4 pmp in the 1985-1988 cohort to 1.6 pmp
in 1997-1999 cohort.

Multiple myeloma
Multiple myeloma is cancer of the plasma cells in bone
marrow. Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside bones. The
bone marrow makes blood cells.
Blood is mostly made up of plasma. Floating in the
plasma are:
•
Red blood cells – that carry oxygen around
the body
•
White blood cells – that fight disease and
infection
•
Platelets – that help to stop bleeding when it
starts.
When a person has multiple myeloma , too many plasma
cells are made. Limited space inside the bone marrow
means that fewer normal blood cells are made. This
prevents normal levels of antibodies from being made, so
you are less able to fight infections.
Multiple myeloma spreads from the bone marrow into the
bone, causing the bone to become thin, weak and more
likely to break. The breakdown of the bone can cause an
increase in the level of calcium ...

INTRODUCTION
Extramedullary plasmacytomas are rare lesions to
diagnose, either as a part of a generalized disease
(Multiple myeloma ) or a local entity. It is possible for an
apparent solitary plasmacytoma to be the first presenting
feature of generalized disease. Extramedullary
plasmacytomas occurring as solitary (primary) tumors
or secondary manifestations of multiple myeloma most
often involve the upper airways and paranasal sinuses.
Skull base is one of the rarest sites of extramedullary
plasmacytoma. The imaging findings associated with this
rare site of extramedullary plasmacytoma involvement are
reported.
CASE REPORT
A 65-year-old woman presented with a large mass in the
left submandibular region in the neck with asymmetry of
left side of face and diplopia for six months. On
examination of neck, a single diffuse 6x10 cm sized firm,
non-tender swelling was noted over ...

Clinical and biological features of multiple myeloma
involving the gastrointestinal system
I
nvolvement of the gastrointestinal (GI) sys-
tem in the course of multiple myeloma
(MM) is extremely rare, and has been
described in the medical literature mainly as
case reports of single patients. In this study, we
retrospectively identified 24 MM patients
with direct infiltration of the GI system by
MM cells documented by biopsy. We exclud-
ed patients with other forms of GI involve-
ment by plasma cell dyscrasias, such as pri-
mary extramedullary plasmacytomas, light
chain deposition disease, and amyloidosis. We
analyzed the ...
