Kawano Heterogeneous expression of CD32 and CD32-mediated growth suppression in human myeloma cells H uman myeloma cells are heteroge- neous with regard to the expression of surface antigens. Based on a recent analysis, immature MPC-1 – cells and mature MPC-1 + myeloma cells were identified. Immature myeloma cells are biologically dif- ferent from mature myeloma cells: for exam- ple, immature myeloma cells respond well to interleukin-6 (IL-6) to proliferate. 1,2 However, in human myeloma , there is usually a marked- ly increased level of serum M protein (usually IgG), which may affect the growth and sur- vival of myeloma and plasma cells. INTRODUCTION Positron emission tomography (PET) with 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is used to evaluate tissue glucose metabolism in vivo . Increased glucose metabolism is one of the biochemical properties of malignant tumors, and tumors with increased glucose metabo- lism show high FDG uptake on PET images. To date, PET imaging has been shown to have clinical value for evaluating various tumors including lung cancer, esophageal cancer, colorectal cancer, lymphoma, melanoma, and head and neck cancers [1]. However, only a few reports have described PET findings of multiple myeloma [2, 7, 8, 10]. We used FDG PET to examine a patient who developed an abdominal tumor during a course of multiple myeloma . Increased FDG uptake was noted in the tumor. Pathological study after surgery revealed the tumor to be a plasmacytoma of the duode- num. Plasmacytoma of ...

PDF [25,9 KB]  From [www.hematology.org]  Last viewed: 06.07.2006
Atypical Plasma Cell Syndromes: Not Just Myeloma Many patients and physicians equate the term “plasma cell dyscrasia” with “multiple myeloma .” Al- though multiple myeloma is the most common, well-studied, and clinically important plasma cell dyscrasia, there are several, less common, lesser known plasma cell disorders that deserve mention. Due to the less frequent incidence of these diseases, many practicing hematologists are less familiar with and less comfort- able treating these “atypical” plasma cell dyscrasias than they are with multiple myeloma . In recognition of these less common but fascinating diseases, the 2005 ASH Education Program presented an Education Ses- sion on Plasma Cell Disorders: Atypical Plasma Cell Syndromes on Saturday and Sunday. The program focused on three such diseases: 1) POEMS syndrome, 2) cryoglobulinemia, and 3) solitary bone and extramed- ullary plasmacytoma. Dr. Angela Dispenzieri ...

These were separated from each other and their structures determined by periodate oxidation. 3. Minor hydrolysis products included the 1:5- and 2: 5-diphosphates (V and VI) of glucosylribitol. The structures assigned to these followed from periodate oxidation. The oxidation product from the 2: 5-diphosphate gave a ribitol diphosphate when treated with alkali. 4. About Myeloma What is Myeloma ? Myeloma is a type of cancer that affects white blood cells known as plasma cells. Plasma cells are found in the bone marrow and are responsible for protecting the body against viruses and infections. In myeloma , the body produces unneeded plasma cells and these multiply rapidly, disrupting the immune system and displacing healthy bone marrow. The myeloma cells collect in the bone marrow and in the hard, outer part of bones. Sometimes they collect in only one bone and form a single mass (tumour), but most often they collect in many bones, forming many tumours. When this happens, the cancer is known as multiple myeloma . Symptoms The most common symptom associated with myeloma is bone pain, frequently in the back and ribs. Other symptoms include excessive tiredness, thirst, exhaustion, bruising, nosebleeds, hazy vision, headache and a neurological symptoms ...
