  myeloma  1146     Adult Leukaemia Unit Stem cell Harvesting and High Dose Therapy and Rescue in Myeloma – ESHAP Mobilization What is ESHAP chemotherapy If your myeloma has failed to respond as well as hoped to your first course of treatment you will be offered ESHAP.  This will have a positive disease effect and will allow us to collect peripheral blood stem cells from you.   ESHAP treatment consists of 4 different drugs: Cytarabine, Cisplatin, Etoposide and a steroid.  You will have this treatment as an inpatient over 5 days.  As a lot of fluid is involved, you will need a double lumen central line for the treatment. What are stem cells? Myeloma , also known as multiple myeloma , is a relatively rare cancer of the plasma cells. Plasma cells are a type of blood cell found in the bone marrow which help to protect the body against infection and viruses. In Myeloma , one plasma cell becomes faulty and multiplies rapidly. This can damage bone marrow and affect the immune system. Myeloma is not curable at present but treatment can control the effects of the disease.
