Stem cell Harvesting and High Dose Therapy and Rescue
in Myeloma – ESHAP Mobilization
What is ESHAP chemotherapy
If your myeloma has failed to respond as well as hoped to your first course of treatment you will be offered ESHAP. This will have a positive disease effect and will allow us to collect peripheral blood stem cells from you.
ESHAP treatment consists of 4 different drugs: Cytarabine, Cisplatin, Etoposide and a steroid. You will have this treatment as an inpatient over 5 days. As a lot of fluid is involved, you will need a double lumen central line for the treatment.

Myeloma , also known as multiple myeloma , is a relatively rare cancer of
the plasma cells. Plasma cells are a type of blood cell found in the bone
marrow which help to protect the body against infection and viruses.
In Myeloma , one plasma cell becomes faulty and multiplies rapidly. This
can damage bone marrow and affect the immune system.
Myeloma is not curable at present but treatment can control the effects of
the disease. Chemotherapy is usually used although radiotherapy is given

1. Clinical History: Patient is a 58 year old male who was diagnosed as
having multiple myeloma (M.M.) at October 19, 1990. Clinical symptoms
included low back pain and general weakness. Past history revealed no
serious illness.
2.Physical Examination: The most significant positive finding of physical
examinations was a severe low back tenderness over L-5 S1 area. The
remainder of the physical findings were within the normal range.
3. Laboratory Data: 24 h. urine Bence-Jones protein (BJP) 1100mg/daily.

The launch of the very first European network of myeloma patient Groups, the MYELOMA EURONET, took
place at the 10
th
Congress of the European Hematology Association (EHA) in Stockholm on 3 June where
they unveiled their new website, www. myeloma -euronet.org.
The organisation is an innovative alliance of myeloma patient groups in Europe who are working together on
shared goals and objectives to bring benefit to patients and their families living with myeloma . Myeloma is
an increasingly common cancer of the plasma cells that is incurable, but treatable, and affects over 31,000
people in Europe at any one time.
